A three-part study, with successive modifications based on preceding results, was conducted to evaluate ureteral placement of metallic stents. Gianturco self-expanding (10 mm and 4 mm diameter) and balloon-expanded (4 mm diameter) metallic stents were placed in normal and stenotic canine ureters. No migration or ureteral perforation occurred during the follow-up of 10 mm stents. Varying degrees of hydronephrosis and hydroureter were found on all 1-week pyelograms. At 4 weeks, complete occlusion of the stented ureter was noted in all cases because of mucosal hyperplasia around the stent wires.

The Arctic is one of the fastest-warming marine regions in the world, which is changing the timing of seasonal sea-ice dynamics. The annual summer breakup of sea-ice coincides with resource pulses, which provide critical food sources for consumers to exploit. Marine organisms respond behaviourally to exploit these resources, with some migrating to presumably maximize feeding opportunities, whereas others remain resident, providing an ideal model to assess potential variability in fish movements and feeding. To assess variability in how migratory and resident fishes exploit increases in resourc

Animal movements contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and are driven in part by environmental conditions. We investigated the links among the environment, animal movement, and infectious disease dynamics in waterfowl, which are among the primary wildlife hosts of avian influenza viruses. By combining telemetry data on 4606 individuals from 26 waterfowl species with data on land cover, weather, and vegetation, we found that waterfowl moved less in areas of higher land cover heterogeneity and higher human population density. Moreover, predicted waterfowl movement distances were weakly

The International Workshop of PhDs and Post-doctoral Fellows on Anadromous Salmonids (NoWPaS) provides a platform for early-career researchers to present and discuss emerging research on salmonid biology. The 2026 meeting, held in Iceland, brought together contributions spanning salmonid ecology, physiology, evolutionary genetics, conservation, and movement ecology. Here, we summarise the main themes of the meeting, highlighting how salmonids continue to serve as powerful model systems. Across sessions, studies emphasised the importance of intraspecific diversity, phenotypic plasticity, and lo

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a recently identified tick-borne virus that has emerged in the twenty-first century. Its primary clinical manifestations include fever and thrombocytopenia, and its high morbidity and mortality rates have garnered significant attention. It is crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the spatial and temporal characteristics of SFTSV migration in order to prevent and control this disease. The SFTSV strains from East Asian countries in GenBank during 2017-2023 were collected and analyzed with phylogenetic and Bayesian methods. P

While wild waterfowl are known reservoirs of avian influenza viruses and facilitate the movement of these viruses, there are notable differences in the response to infection across species. This study explored differential responses to infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza in Snow Geese (Anser caerulescens) located in the California Central Valley. Though H5 antibody prevalence was high across years among birds sampled in the winter (75% in both years via hemagglutination inhibition), these values were even higher among birds sampled in summer that failed to migrate (i.e., August 20

Migratory wildlife plays an outsized role in disease transmission. Transmission risk is often assumed to be scaled with migratory host density through parasite transport effects, but in environmentally transmitted parasites, migratory hosts can also influence parasite availability via trophic effects. Trophic effects can either amplify or dampen transport effects, making the net impact of migratory hosts on resident hosts difficult to predict. We propose that the net effect is shaped by two attributes of migrant movement: intensity of use (i.e., number of migrants) and duration of use (i.e., l

Recently, increasing attention has been posed on the role of migrating birds in the spread of ticks and indirectly of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). Despite, Italy is considered a bridge between continental Europe and North Africa and a necessary path to connect Mediterranean countries, few studies have been conducted on ticks collected from birds migrating through this country and associated TBPs. The aims of this research were to estimate the infestation burden and identify tick species feeding on migratory birds, and perform a molecular screening for TBPs. During autumn migration (2019-2020),

Migratory movements and alteration of host communities through livestock production are examples of ecological processes that may have consequences on wildlife pathogens. We studied the effect of co-grazing of cattle and wild elk, and of elk migratory behaviour on the occurrence of the giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, in elk. Migratory elk and elk herds with a higher proportion of migratory individuals were significantly less likely to be infected with F. magna. This may indicate a decreased risk of infection for migratory individuals, known as the "migratory escape" hypothesis. Elk herd

Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis (CNM; family Anaplasmataceae) was recently recognized as a potential tick-borne human pathogen. The presence of CNM in mammals, in host-seeking Ixodes ticks and in ticks attached to mammals and birds has been reported recently. We investigated the presence of CNM in ornithophagous ticks from migrating birds. A total of 1,150 ticks (582 nymphs, 548 larvae, 18 undetermined ticks and two adult females) collected from 5,365 birds captured in south-eastern Sweden was screened for CNM by molecular methods. The birds represented 65 different species, of which 35 spe

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic tooth movement is fraught with risks and complications. Root resorption is the most frequent and important outcome which may arise due to inappropriate force magnitude or tooth movement into dense or altered bone. This study was aimed to demonstrate histologic changes in tooth roots following movement into a jaw region treated with synthetic bone substitute. Another objective was to evaluate the method of experimental tooth movement using an animal model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One mandibular premolar was extracted in each of three pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The ex

We document mercury distribution in tissues of two waterfowls; moorhen (Gallinula chloropus; n=6), and Common Teal (Anas crecca; n=6) from Shadegan wetlands in Southwestern Iran. Mean value of mercury in moorhen liver was (0.36 Hg microg g(-1) dry weight), Common Teal had (4.34 Hg microg g(-1) dry weight) mercury. In all tissues, Common Teals had significantly higher mercury concentrations than moorhens (U test, p <or= 0.05). Mercury was 12, 9, 8, and 6 times higher in liver, muscle, kidney, and feather of Common Teals. These birds have comparable diets but Common Teals are migratory and moorh

CASE REPORT: Four gang-gang cockatoos from an aviary in Sydney displayed severe neurological signs. Three were necropsied and histopathology of the brains and spinal cords revealed migrating nematodes, which were identified as Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The migrating larval nematodes created tracts of malacia in the brain, but elicited little inflammatory cell infiltration. However, adult nematodes that had emerged onto the meningeal surface of the spinal cord evoked a marked non-suppurative reaction. Detailed histological examination of other tissues revealed larvae embedded in arterioles i

Guinea pig serum was shown to be cytotoxic against a subpopulation of autologous thymocytes. The sensitive cells belonged to the population of small, high-density cells, constituting the majority of cortical thymocytes. In this respect, the activity resembled that of some heterologous sera tested (rat, rabbit) and allogeneic serum. The same population was also particularly reactive in rapid early (RE) migration [Sandberg, 1981] induced by rat serum. Human serum differed from other tested sera both as regards cytotoxicity and RE migration. The cytotoxic effect of autologous serum was demonstrat

In China, the population of wild musk deer, belonging to the family Moschidae, has drastically decreased in recent years owing to human activities and environmental changes. During the 1990s, artificial breeding of Alpine musk deer was conducted in Xinglong Mountain, Gansu Province, China, and their ex situ conservation was explored for over a decade. Ex situ protection is beneficial for expanding the population of animals and maintaining their genetic diversity; however, it can also induce metabolic diseases and parasitic infections and reduce reproductive capacity. The gut microbiota of anim

Ischemic stroke is a major cause of disability and mortality worldwide. Increasing evidence indicates that peripheral immune responses contribute to secondary brain injury after stroke. The impact of the splenic response on brain injury has been well documented in animal models. This phenomenon remains poorly defined in the clinical situation. Through a retrospective analysis of 76 patients with acute anterior circulation large-vessel occlusion, we provide novel evidence that post-stroke spleen volume reduction is an outstanding risk factor for cerebral edema expansion, an association partiall

In order to gain insight into the molecular nature of some of the interactions that shape the ontogeny of the ENS, we have been studying two murine models in which enteric neural development is abnormal. One is the lethal spotted (ls/ls) mutant mouse. The other is a line of transgenic mice ("1975-2") that overexpress a homeobox-containing gene, Hox-1.4. Megacolon, an expansion of the bowel proximal to an abnormally innervated terminal gut, develops in each of these mice; however, the animals differ with respect to the nature of their neural defect. In ls/ls mice the terminal bowel is congenita

1. Congenitally goitrous thyroid tissue was obtained from South Australian Merino sheep. Ultrastructural studies of the secretory cells in this tissue showed active cells of normal appearance, containing apical protein droplets. 2. (125)I-labelling in vivo of goitre tissue was used to investigate the iodoproteins, in which the major proportion of (125)I appeared in the cell protein fraction soluble in 0.9% sodium chloride (average 62% in goitres from untreated sheep). 3. Ammonium sulphate fractionation showed two clear peaks of iodoprotein precipitation, one at 35-40% saturation and the other
