Sutureless anastomoses using magnetic rings in canine liver transplantation model.

BACKGROUND: In the first posttransplant month, the most frequent complications are due to technical problems related to complex vascular and bile duct reconstructions during the operation. Moreover, despite great improvements in suturing technique and materials, severe organ ischemia-reperfusion caused by time-consuming hand suturing is still an important factor in graft survival. During the operation, severe hypotension, hypoxic acidosis, hyperkalemia, and renal dysfunction may occur during the anhepatic phase due to the prolonged venous clamping time required for hand suturing. Therefore, ha

Modification of animal habitat by large plants: mechanisms by which seagrasses influence clam growth.

Field experiments withMercenaria mercenaria in a relatively high-energy environment demonstrated that clams on unvegetated sand flats failed to grow during autumn while those within seagrass beds grew substantially. Clam growth rates at the seagrass margin that first receives the faster-flowing, flood-tidal currents were about 25% less than at the opposite edge. In a second experiment, pruning, which reduced average blade length by 50-75%, was shown to enhance near-bottom current velocities and to reduce shell growth ofMercenaria during summer by about 50%. As in the first experiment, clams in

Aspects of constitutive and acquired antibioresistance in Aeromonas hydrophila strains isolated from water sources.

Over the last three decades, the literature pointed out the implications of Aeromonas species in human pathology. These species were described as being involved in intestinal (several outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis of choleric/dysenteric form or chronic diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, etc.) in normal adults or children, as well as in extraintestinal infections in immunocompromised hosts. This last aspect included a large range of cutaneous injuries (micronecrosis, abscesses, bums, cellulites, furunculosis), joint, bones, respiratory, urinary tract, ocular infections up to meningitis, endoca

Glutamate receptor antibodies in neurological diseases: anti-AMPA-GluR3 antibodies, anti-NMDA-NR1 antibodies, anti-NMDA-NR2A/B antibodies, anti-mGluR1 antibodies or anti-mGluR5 antibodies are present in subpopulations of patients with either: epilepsy, encephalitis, cerebellar ataxia, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and neuropsychiatric SLE, Sjogren's syndrome, schizophrenia, mania or stroke. These autoimmune anti-glutamate receptor antibodies can bind neurons in few brain regions, activate glutamate receptors, decrease glutamate receptor's expression, impair glutamate-induced signaling and function, activate blood brain barrier endothelial cells, kill neurons, damage the brain, induce behavioral/psychiatric/cognitive abnormalities and ataxia in animal models, and can be removed or silenced in some patients by immunotherapy.

Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter of the Central Nervous System (CNS), and it is crucially needed for numerous key neuronal functions. Yet, excess glutamate causes massive neuronal death and brain damage by excitotoxicity--detrimental over activation of glutamate receptors. Glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity is the main pathological process taking place in many types of acute and chronic CNS diseases and injuries. In recent years, it became clear that not only excess glutamate can cause massive brain damage, but that several types of anti-glutamate receptor antibodies, that are

[Efficient separation of gossypol from cotton kernels with copper mediated magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer].

Cotton is an economically important crop in China. Cotton fibers are widely used in the textile industry and cottonseed is a key source of edible oils and proteins. Cottonseed contains gossypol (GOS), a natural bioactive compound that exhibits medicinal properties, including antitumor and antiviral activities; it is also a potential contraceptive agent. Despite these benefits, GOS has some critical drawbacks, as it is associated with side effects such as antifertility and mammalian growth inhibition that limit the comprehensive utilization of cottonseed resources. Consequently, GOS needs to be

Bioabsorbable polymers in cancer therapy: latest developments.

Cancer is a devastating disease, being responsible for 13 % of all deaths worldwide. One of the main challenges in treating cancer concerns the fact that anti-cancer drugs are not highly specific for the cancer cells and the "death" of healthy cells in the course of chemotherapy treatment is inevitable. In this sense, the use of drug delivery systems (DDS) can be seen as a powerful tool to minimize or overcome this very important issue. DDS can be designed to target specific tissues in order to mitigate side effects. Bioabsorbable polymers, due to their inherent characteristics, and because th
