Gastric hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors that can cause severe gastrointestinal system bleeding. We determined the capacity and the profile of prostaglandin synthesis in the antral mucosa of patients with erosive (n = 43) or non-erosive (n = 24) Type B gastritis in comparison with normal controls (n = 24). Biopsy specimens from the stomach and duodenum of 45 duodenal ulcer patients treated with ranitidine, misoprostol, or an antacid were examined. During 4 weeks of treatment the duodenal ulcer healed in 31 patients. Between 1970 and 1988, 12 restrosternal esophageal substitutions using an ileocolic interposition were performed. The ages of the 12 children ranged from 2 to 6 years. In 11 children the esophageal strictures were secondary to ingestion of caustic liquid. All patients had failed esophageal dilation therapy. One death occurred on the 7th postoperative day following an episode of cardiac arrest at surgery. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective trial, the activity of rioprostil, a new prostaglandin E1 alcohol analogue, on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastroduodenal mucosal lesions is studied in 30 patients with rheumatic diseases. Colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) in the form of a chewable tablet has been compared with ranitidine in the short-term treatment of benign gastric ulcers. Eighty patients were admitted to this randomised single blind study. Endoscopic control was carried out after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks when healing was incomplete or had not occurred at the 4-week examination. The effectiveness of pirenzepine in the treatment of gastric ulcer was assessed in a double-blind 6 weeks' clinical trial in comparison with placebo. After 2 weeks of treatment 1 patient in each group showed a complete healing of gastric ulcer.
