The clinical features of ten cases of cutaneous anthrax are reported. Six males and four females were affected. Their ages ranged from one and a half year to sixty years. The average incubation period was 8 days. Fever and headache were common systemic manifestations. Pruritus and ulcer with formation of black eschar were typical features. The patients were treated with penicillins and chloramphenicol. There was no mortality. Possible human-to-human spread in a patient is discussed.

An abnormally high mortality among hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) in the Luangwa River valley between June and November 1987 and estimated to number more than 4000 deaths was attributed to anthrax. An outbreak of anthrax occurred in a 500 sow unit at Singret Farm, Llay, during the summer of 1989. This paper describes the sequence of events leading up to the depopulation of the farm, as seen and recorded by a veterinary surgeon in the practice involved. Some of the problems encountered and their significance for the future are discussed.

We describe a patient who presented with a necrotic black eschar 2 x 2 cm on the neck, extensive erythema around the lesion and massive oedema extending from the lesion to the umbilicus, and involving the whole face. Severe toxaemia and shock developed. Bacillus anthracis was isolated from the lesion. Prednisolone and dopamine failed to reverse the shock. The patient recovered completely with penicillin therapy.

Anthrax was diagnosed in a cow on a ranch in southwest Saskatchewan in February of 1980. Confirmation was based on bacteriological isolation from the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes. Evidence suggests that a creek on the ranch had carried the organisms from an area of previous infection years earlier. It is noteworthy in this case that the spleen was not enlarged. Carcass disposal, vaccination, and disinfection procedures are discussed.

Although there exists in the U.K. a high degree of control of industrial and agricultural anthrax in man and anthrax in animals originating either from animal products or from materials contaminated by contact with them, total control of anthrax in this country seems unlikely to follow until the disease is eliminated from livestock in the enzootic areas abroad. This view rests on the probability that any contamination of agricultural land by anthrax spores is unlikely to be permanent in Britain.

Quantitative measurements of mean time to death, percentage of survivors, and viable cell populations in the whole body were employed to determine the effects of penicillin, dihydrostreptomycin, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, and antiserum on the course of anthrax infection in mice. By all parameters tested, penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin were most effective in the treatment of the disease.
