Aphakia (ak), a mouse mutation affecting early eye development: fine mapping, consideration of candidate genes and altered Pax6 and Six3 gene expression pattern.

The homozygous mouse mutant aphakia (ak) has been characterized by bilaterally aphakic eyes without a pupil [Varnum DS, Stevens, LC (1968): J Hered 59:147-150]. The mutation was mapped to chromosome 19 [Varnum DS, Stevens, LC (1975): Mouse News Lett 53:35]. Our linkage studies yielded a precise localization of the ak gene 0.6 +/- 0.3 cM proximal to the microsatellite marker D19Mit10 and 0.7 +/- 0.4 cM distal to D19Mit4 and D19Mit91. No recombination was found with the marker D19Mit9 among 418 backcross offspring tested. The developmental control gene Pax2 mapped 11.0 +/- 3.5 cM proximal to ak …

Surgical Management for Silicone Oil Barrier of Traumatic Aniridia with Aphakia: Suturing of Temporary Iris-Diaphragm Prior to Final Iris-Lens-Diaphragm Implantation.

PURPOSE: Patients with traumatic aniridia, aphakia and retinal complications can require silicone oil endotamponade. In the absence of compartmentalization, there is a risk of silicone oil migrating to the anterior chamber which can cause long-term complications. We report a two-step procedure in trauma cases, using sutures for silicone oil retention in primary care and subsequently prior to secondary artificial iris (AI) and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, to achieve a reconstruction of the anterior and posterior chamber. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven patients with loss of the iris-lens-d…

Clinical evaluation of back optic radius and power determination by age in pediatric aphakia due to congenital cataract fitted with a Silicone Elaster contact lens.

The purpose of this study was to provide optometrists with suggested base curves and powers for initial lens choice based on the infant's age. A retrospective chart review of 16 congenital cataract patients fitted at U.C. Davis Eye Clinic between July 1987 and May 1993 was performed. Patients with associated ocular pathologies were excluded. All patients were fitted with a Bausch & Lomb Silsoft lens, a Silicone Elastomer, set at a 3.00 D myopic posture, which was decreased with the child's increasing age and activity. This study provides a graphical approach to pediatric aphakic silicone elast

Comparison of visual acuity and complications between primary IOL implantation and aphakia in patients with congenital cataract younger than 2 years: a meta-analysis.

To analyze the visual acuity and complications between primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and contact lens wearing, this literature search was performed with data on patients with congenital cataract younger than 2 years published in March 2019. Seven identified studies enrolling 675 eyes were selected for analysis. Patients with primary IOL implantation owned better visual acuity than those with aphakia who wore the contact lens (weighted mean difference = 0.161; 95% CI, 0.108-0.214). For visual axis opacification (VAO), primary IOL implantation increases the incidence of VAO compare…

A new technique for treating posttraumatic aniridia with aphakia: first results of haptic fixation of a foldable intraocular lens on a foldable and custom-tailored iris prosthesis.

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy is a primary mitochondrial disease characterized by acute visual loss due to the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. In this study, we describe a patient carrying a rare missense heteroplasmic variant in MT-ND1, NC_012920.1:m.4135T>C (p.Tyr277His) manifesting with a typical bilateral painless decrease of the visual function, triggered by physical exercise or higher ambient temperature. Functional studies in muscle and fibroblasts show that amino acid substitution Tyr277 with His leads to only a negligibly decreased level of respiratory chain complex I (CI)
