We performed homoplastic keratomileusis on 6 aphakic eyes with central corneal leucoma. The results showed that the post-operative corrected visual acuities were markedly increased to 0.3-0.5 in 3 cases and to 0.1-0.2 in another 3 cases. Since such patients were neither indicated to undergo intraocular lens implantation or penetrating keratoplasty for various reasons nor indicated for epikeratoplasty, homoplastic keratomileusis can be chosen for them.

The purpose of this study was to determine the corneal epithelial alterations induced by various types of contact lenses. By employing the specular microscope, the corneal epithelia of 60 patients who had worn contact lenses for more than 1 year were re-examined along with 15 myopic controls. BACKGROUND: Having used the nonfreeze Barraquer-Krumeich-Swinger set for refractive lamellar keratoplasty since January 1987, the authors found the results of this procedure to be disappointing for correction of aphakia. The management of three patients with aphakic bullous keratopathy by means of pars plana vitrectomy is described. The patients had previously undergone uneventful intracapsular cataract extraction with intact vitreous face. Eventual herniation of the vitreous into the anterior chamber with resultant corneal endothelial touch caused the corneal edema in all three cases. Visual acuity with correction was checked in 86 persons with anterior and posterior chamber lenses in various postoperative periods. In the majority of examines of both groups in the late postoperative period the visual acuity was correct. The results obtained in both groups of patients were compared. Intraocular lenses are known to be efficacious in the correction of aphakia, but their suitability and durability in Army aviators has not been previously evaluated. Eight experienced pilots (preoperative flight time average: 7,660 hours), who had intraocular lens implants following removal of cataractus lenses, were studied. We examined five patients who developed pupillary block after extracapsular cataract extraction. One of the patients also had a posterior chamber intraocular lens implanted at the time of cataract operation. In all five patients, pupillary block was promptly relieved by Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

The manifest (dry) refractions of 165 eyes of 86 patients, aged 6 to 75 years, were studied on the Nikon Auto Refractometer NR-1000F. Vitreous fluorophotometry was performed on 63 patients undergoing cataract extraction. Pre- and postoperative studies demonstrated that this procedure always induces alterations in the blood-aqueous barrier.
