Intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts are cerebral disorders of a high prevalence. However, association between both malformations is a rare finding. The aim was to analyse this association with regard to the different clinical presentations according to the haemorrhage types, as well as the pathogenesis of this association. We searched the English language literature in MEDLINE database in order to include all manuscripts in which this association was found. A new case of a 55-year-old man with a large posterior communicating artery aneurysm and a middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst pres

It is known that the caudal dislocation of the cerebellar tonsils may occur associated with clinical conditions such as an intracranial mass lesion or Chiari I and II malformation. It may also be acquired after repeated lumbar punctures or lumboperitoneostomy. The occurrence of cerebellar herniation after derivation of intracranial arachnoid cyst is extremely rare, and there are only three cases reported in the medical literature. We present the case of a 9-year-old boy with precocious puberty and suprasellar arachnoid cyst who developed a symptomatic herniation of the cerebellar tonsils three

Arachnoid cysts account for almost 1% of neoformations located in the cerebellopontine angle. The aetiopathogenesis is unknown. Arachnoid cysts of the cranial posterior fossa may produce symptoms typical of a tumour such as headache, dizziness, tinnitus and progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Management of these lesions is still controversial; if the arachnoid cyst is symptomatic, surgical treatment is usually recommended. The case is described of an adult female with sudden unilateral cochlear hearing loss as presenting symptom of an arachnoid cyst in the cranial posterior fossa.

Authors operated on successfully giant interhemispheric arachnoid cyst associated with corpus callosum agenesis. A conclusion was drawn that this cyst was in fact expansive cavum Vergae cyst, taking into consideration the developmental mechanism responsible for the formation of third ventricle dorsal cysts (Fig. 8, Ref. 10).

CASE REPORT: We describe the clinical, radiological and pathological findings of concurrent, congenital leptomeningeal arteriovenous malformation with hemangioma diagnosed in a newborn by prenatal and immediately postnatal magnetic resonance imaging. Vascular abnormalities were accompanied by massive arachnoidal cell hyperplasia reminiscent of meningioma.
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of such a lesion reported in the literature.

The clinical and genetic findings are described for 16 patients from a large Italian family with a variant form of hereditary spastic paraplegia and congenital arachnoid cysts inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. A molecular study has revealed a novel missense mutation, T614I, in exon 17 of SPG4, which may play a role in both focal cortical dysgenesis and neurodegeneration of the motor neurons in the corticospinal tract.

BACKGROUND: We describe the very rare condition of an idiopathic spinal arachnoid malformation associated with syringomyelia (SM) and depicted on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) whose features were confirmed at surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 34-year-old female suffered from progressive gait impairment because of lower limb palsy and sensory disturbances. MRI demonstrated a bulging membrane at the T6 level that was transversely stretched between the dorsal aspect of the spinal cord and the posterior dura mater. At this level, the spinal cord appeared atrophic and pushed anteriorly

Weismann-Netter and Stuhl (toxopachyosteosis) syndrome is a rare bone disease, manifesting with anterior bowing of the tibiae, short stature and mild mental retardation. We report a patient with Weismann-Netter and Stuhl syndrome with an unusual manifestation communicant hydrocephalus and arachnoid cyst.

OBJECT: In this study the authors identify and investigate two new classifications of suprasellar arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: The authors used computerized tomography cisternography, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and neuroendoscopy to investigate nine cases of suprasellar arachnoid cysts. A communicating cyst with early filling and early clearance of a radioopaque tracer was found in seven of nine cases; a communicating cyst with delayed filling and delayed clearance of the tracer was observed in one case; and a noncommunicating cyst was observed in the other. The MR findings indicated a var

OBJECT: The origin of chronic communicating hydrocephalus following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is not well understood. Fibrosis of the arachnoid villi has been suggested as the cause for obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow, but this is not well supported in the literature. The goal of this study was to determine the relationship between blood, inflammation, and cellular proliferation in arachnoid villi after SAH.
METHODS: Arachnoid villi from 50 adult patients were sampled at autopsy. All specimens were subjected to a variety of histochemical and immunohistochemical stains. The 2

We describe a patient with an arachnoid cyst, possibly of traumatic origin, at the hypoglossal canal producing atrophy of the tongue. An arachnoid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient with a localized cystic mass around the cranial nerves at the base of the skull.

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are congenital cystic brain malformations associated with epilepsy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of surgical intervention of ACs on cyst size and seizure outcome. We reviewed the world's medical literature dealing with surgically treated ACs in epilepsy patients. Our study included only cases, in which the relationship between pre-and postoperative CT-size of the AC and seizure outcome was described. We also included six patients with ACs and epilepsy treated surgically at the University of Mainz. We analyzed postoperative AC size and seizure outc

We present a patient who developed a high central neural block after stellate-ganglion-blockade. The underlying pathophysiology was assessed via sonographic imaging. Stellate ganglion block was performed in a 19-year old patient according to the standard technique. Multiple aspiration tests were negative and a test dose of 3 ml bupivacaine 0.25% was injected. After a 3 min interval another 5 ml were injected. Two minutes after the local anaesthetic administration the patient reported nausea and sensations in the upper extremity. Spontaneous respiration efforts stopped, and the patient became u

We describe a patient who received an apparently uneventful extradural block in labour but developed rapid extension of neural block within minutes of receiving her first incremental dose 2 h later. Computed contrast tomography revealed radio-opaque dye within both the subdural and subarachnoid spaces, but none within the extradural space. This case report demonstrates that subdural spread of low-dose local anaesthetics is not always clinically distinguishable from extradural analgesia and that the arachnoid membrane may subsequently perforate with potentially serious consequences.

A case of progressive cauda equina syndrome secondary to ossification of the lumbosacral dura arachnoid following an incomplete spinal cord injury is presented. The etiology of the ossification is unclear and may be secondary to heterotopic osseous metaplasia such as occurs in other sites in spinal cord injured patients.

Stereotactic cysto-ventricular shunting in three patients with congenital (subependymal cyst of the 3rd ventricle, subependymal cyst of the foramen of Monro, cyst of cavum septi pellucidi) and in a female patient with a large cystic suprasellar craniopharyngeoma is dealt with in this paper. The first operation was performed in May 1992 and the latest, being considered in this paper, in October 1993. All patients were admitted to our hospital suffering from signs of increased intracranial pressure. CT-scans revealed on the one hand an obstructive hydrocephalus subjected to the cystic arachnoid

Two siblings presented with macrocephaly, psychomotor delay, and progressive dystonia. The initial diagnosis was of hydrocephalus and bilateral temporal cerebrospinal fluid collections. Following ventriculoperitoneal shunting, the patients showed only modest neurological improvement. Metabolic investigations performed later in the course of the disease disclosed increased levels of glutaric acid in the urine and decreased levels of serum carnitine, which were confirmatory of glutaric aciduria type 1. The association of macrocephaly, dystonia, and bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts, shown eithe
