Ejaculation induced by penile vibratory stimulation in men with spinal cord injuries. The importance of the vibratory amplitude.

A total of 66 men with a spinal cord injury (SCI) and ejaculatory dysfunction were included in two different but comparable study population … g that the vibrator output is more important than PVS experience. No major adverse reactions due to autonomic dysreflexia were observed. The lowest level of SCI where antegrade or retrograde ejaculation occurred was T9 and L1, respectively. Secondary impairments after spinal cord injury: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of secondary impairments among individuals with long-standing spinal cord injury in Quebec and the potential relationships between these impairments and several variables. DESIGN: A review of 2,200 medical files was conducted to determine the target population; 976 patients were selected randomly and mailed questionnaires. The results were based on 482 individuals with spinal cord injury who returned the completed questionnaire. The questionnaire included 14 subsections, such as sociodemographic, medical, psychosocial, and environmental information. The

Impact of Activity-Based Training on Bowel Function in a Rat Model of Spinal Cord Injury.

Significant bowel-related issues after spinal cord injury (SCI) that affect morbidity and quality of life (QOL) include diminished bowel motility, loss of sphincter control, gastric ulcers, autonomic dysreflexia, pain, diarrhea, constipation, and fecal incontinence. Clinical diagnoses and research in humans have largely relied on anorectal manometry (ARM) procedures to increase understanding of the functional effects of SCI on colorectal motility and defecation physiology. Recent pre-clinical rodent studies have also used ARM to further our understanding of bowel-related dysfunctions post-SCI.…

Proinflammatory and Immunomodulatory Gene and Protein Expression Patterns in Spinal Cord and Spleen Following Acute and Chronic High Thoracic Injury.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to paralysis and loss of sensation, high-level spinal cord injury (SCI) causes sympathetic dysfunction that can lead to autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and chronic immune suppression involving splenic leukopenia. Evidence has shown that treatment with either gabapentin or blockade of TNFα mitigates maladaptive plasticity and the underlying hemodynamic dysfunction, spleen atrophy, and immune dysfunction associated with AD. Because significant improvements long term was noted following treatments only during acute stages of recovery, we sought to systematically examine chang…

Storage and urination are the main functions of the lower urinary tract and its lesions lead to the so-called lower urinary tract syndrome c … dysfunctions could contribute to the development of this condition, ranging from local dysfunction (autonomic dysreflexia) or local nerve injury to upper/lower motoneuron injury or central degenerative processes. Regardless of the diverse etiology, the clinical symptoms eventually manifest in two major forms, i.e., overacting (automatic bladder with increased detrusor …

Pain management with interventional spine therapy in patients with spinal cord injury: a case series.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is common in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). Any new strategy that is effective in treating this problem would be welcomed by this patient population. METHODS: A case series is presented of SCI with neuropathic pain. In these 3 cases, interventional spine therapy is used as a diagnostic and/or therapeutic tool in the management of pain. RESULTS: In the cases presented, interventional spine therapy proved useful in identifying the patient's pain generator. In most cases, the intervention was effective in reducing pain for a long enough period to serv

Diminished skin vasodilator response to local heating in patients with long-standingsubacute myelo-optico-neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Local heating of non-glabrous skin increases skin blood flow (SkBF) in two phases: the initial peak (P1) is mediated by sensory axon reflex, and the plateau phase (P2) is thought to be mediated by local production of substances including nitric oxide. We evaluated P1 and P2 responses in subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON). METHODS: SkBF response to local heating from 32 degrees C (5 min of baseline) to 42 degrees C (at least for 30 min) of the dorsal surface of the hand skin were measured in 7 SMON patients (67.6+/-10.0 years) and 7 normal control volunteers (65.0+/-7.4 years)
