BACKGROUND: An aircraft's orientation relative to the ground cannot be perceived via the sense of balance or the somatosensory system. When devoid of external visual references, the pilot must rely on instruments. A sudden unexpected instrument indication is a challenge to the pilot, who might have to question the instrument instead of responding with the controls. BACKGROUND: Ejection injuries and fatalities are a problem around the world. However, the definitions of injury types in past studies have been idiosyncratic, and it has been difficult to compare studies across national air forces and aircraft types. This study determined factors that contribute to injury or fatality in ejections in the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF).
METHODS: The records for all JASDF ejections for the period 1956-2004 were analyzed to determine the relationships between types of injuries and ejection characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Phobic fear of flying may affect aircrew members during any phase of their flying careers. Symptoms are beyond voluntary control and may lead patients to avoid flying and seek medical advice.
METHODS: Of 1101 psychiatric files from our institute for 1985-2002, 150 represented cases of fliers who suffered from phobic fear of flying. Data collected from those files included assessment of fear-evoking situations, type of aircraft, class of aircrew duties, aircraft accident history, past medical history, age, and associated psychiatric comorbidity.

An aerial-spray pilot died when his aircraft crashed while he was spraying methomyl. We measured the pesticide in his blood by gas chromatography with flame photometric detection and confirmed the results by mass spectrometry with direct liquid injection through a liquid chromatography interface. The whole blood methomyl concentration was 570 ng/mL.

Survival after an airplane disaster is rare. We describe the injuries of survivors of an airplane accident and present a common mechanism of trauma for victims. Descriptive data were gathered by interviews with patients, physical examination. Review of charts and patients X-ray films. In this prospective study, the parachuting injuries which occurred during 2031 jumps in basic courses of free fall were compared with the injuries occurring during 2468 jumps for reserve paratroopers on training exercises. Fifty-eight injuries were recorded in 51 paratroopers. The ankle was most commonly affected, and 80 per cent of the injuries involved the lower extremity. Only 14 per cent of the injured troopers suffered severe injuries (fractures, knee ligament ruptures). The injury rate for paratroopers on basic courses (19.7 injuries per 1000 jumps) was significantly higher (P < 0.0001)

OBJECTIVE: To determine if older pilots forgot more about a learned flight task after a 10-month delay than did younger pilots and if the anticipated greater skill loss led older pilots' performance to be more disrupted by alcohol.
