Rodents as potential couriers for bioterrorism agents.

Many pathogens that can cause major public health, economic, and social damage are relatively easily accessible and could be used as biological weapons. Wildlife is a natural reservoir for many potential bioterrorism agents, and, as history has shown, eliminating a pathogen that has dispersed among wild fauna can be extremely challenging. Since a number of wild rodent species live close to humans, rodents constitute a vector for pathogens to circulate among wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. This article reviews the possible consequences of a deliberate spread of rodentborne pathogens. It

Tezepelumab in severe asthma with pulmonary mucus plugs and eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis after dupilumab intolerance and suboptimal mepolizumab response: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tezepelumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. However, real-world evidence remains limited, particularly for patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) who exhibit inadequate or unfavorable responses to other biologics. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a woman with severe asthma complicated by ECRS, who exhibited divergent clinical responses to multiple biologic agents. Treatment with dupilumab initially improved both a

Chronic Dexamethasone Disturbs the Circadian Rhythm of Melatonin and Clock Genes in Goats.

Dex is a drug commonly used as an immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory agent in humans and animals. GCs have a profound impact on melatonin expression and biological rhythm. However, the effect of chronic exposure to Dex on melatonin secretion and biological clock gene expression in ruminants is still unclear. Ten goats were randomly divided into two groups: the control group was injected with saline, and the Dex-treated group was intramuscularly injected daily for 21 d with 0.2 mg/kg Dex. The rhythm of melatonin secretion in the plasma was disturbed in the Dex group, and the plasma and col

Early control of C-reactive protein levels with non-biologics is associated with slow radiographic progression in radiographic axial spondyloarthritis.

AIM: Predicting radiographic progression is vital for assessing the prognosis of patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis, and C-reactive protein (CRP) may be a valuable biomarker for this purpose. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in the CRP level and spinal radiographic progression in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis who were initially treated with non-biologics. METHODS: Patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis who were followed up for 18 years at a single center and initially treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory d

Steroid sulfotransferases and steroid sulfate sulfatases: characteristics and biological roles.

This review discusses the biological roles of steroid sulfotransferase enzymes (ST's) and steroid sulfate sulfohydrolases (sulfatases) mainly in mammalian tissues. In addition, some consideration is given to certain characteristics of these enzymes and, where possible, to their biological control. A considerable number of ST's of varying specificities, substrate affinities, and kinetics appear to exist. Several of these possess the properties of regulatory enzymes. ST's which act upon estrogen in reproductive tissues, such as uterus, are of particularly high affinity, appear to be under some b

Biological Therapies in Inflammatory Myopathies.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are a rare group of disorders that feature progressive immune-mediated skeletal muscle destruction along with skin, lung, and joint involvement. Management of IIMs necessitates glucocorticoid therapy followed by conventional steroid-sparing agents to control disease activity. In the settings of refractory myositis or life-threatening manifestations, e.g. lung involvement or oropharyngeal dysphagia, second-line therapies are needed to minimize disease burden, avoid end-organ damage and steroid toxicity, and decrease mortality. These therapies may include

[Treatment of chronic ulcers].

Chronic ulcers are a challenge in dermatological therapy. It is essential to establish their etiology in order to treat them, but on many occasions local therapy is of great interest. Treatment of chronic ulcers is currently based on so-called moist wound healing, and it takes two aspects into consideration: the underlying pathology and local treatment. Local treatment is always necessary and includes: cleaning, debridement, the control of any infection, and the application of different topical agents, both medication and dressings. Recently, new therapeutic strategies are being established, s

Rhizosphere microbial diversity analysis reveals enrichment of biocontrol taxa in healthy tobacco plants and yields novel antagonists against Phytophthora nicotianae.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco black shank (TBS), caused by Phytophthora nicotianae, is a devastating disease. Current control relies heavily on chemical pesticides, which pose risks of resistance and environmental pollution. Biological control using rhizosphere microorganisms offers a sustainable alternative. However, the relationship between the composition of the rhizosphere microbiome and its suppressive activity against P. nicotianae has not yet been systematically elucidated. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was used to compare the differences in rhizosphere microbiota of healthy and diseased

Morphophysiological and Histopathological Effects of Ammonium Sulfate Fertilizer on Aporrectodea trapezoides (Dugès, 1828) Earthworm.

The present study used the adult earthworm Aporrectodea trapezoides as a bioindicator species to look into the possible dangers of ammonium … and exposure time responses and underscores the potential of A. trapezoides earthworms as valuable biological control agents against acidic ammonium sulfate fertilizer. Importantly, this research contributes to the use of such biomarkers in evaluating soil toxicity and the biological control of environmental risk assessment associated with chemical fertilizers.

Gene editing to enhance pesticide resistance in a beneficial predatory mite.

Successful integrated pest management (IPM) often depends on a suite of control strategies that are compatible with one another. The predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a key biological control agent of spider mites (especially Tetranychus spp.) and other diminutive, yet important arthropod pests of agriculture. However, like many natural enemies, N. californicus is highly sensitive to chemical pesticides, limiting its overall effectiveness in the field. Here, we used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing and Receptor-Mediated Ovary Transduction of Cargo (ReMOT Control) to creat

Comprehensive treatment of dactylitis in psoriatic arthritis.

Dactylitis, a hallmark clinical feature of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and other spondyloarthropathies, may also be a severity marker for PsA and psoriasis. Traditionally, clinicians have used nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and local corticosteroid injections to treat dactylitis, although conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs are also used. We performed a systematic literature review to determine the most efficacious current treatment options for dactylitis in PsA. Effect sizes were greatest for the biologic agents ustekinumab, certolizumab, and infliximab, suggesting that ther

Research Progress in Pharmacological Targeted Therapy for Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disorder of neuromuscular junction transmission that is mediated by autoantibodies and depends on T cell help, causing fatigable muscle weakness. Limitations of conventional first-line treatments, including long-term adverse effects and inadequate control of refractory disease, have driven targeted therapy to the forefront of MG research. This narrative review summarizes second-line and later-line targeted biological and cellular therapies, covering agents directedat B and T cells, complement inhibitors, neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) antagonists and cytokine inhibitor

Repeated Paradoxical Aggravation of Preexisting Psoriasis during Infliximab Treatment for Crohn's Disease.

As more rheumatologists and dermatologists have begun to use biological agents such as TNF-alpha blocker, they have confronted an unexpected complication: psoriasis was paradoxically aggravated or induced by the TNF-alpha blocker. Although it is not a common complication of TNF-alpha blocker, this aggravation may be more common than previously thought. To our knowledge, most reports about TNF-alpha blocker-induced psoriasis have been limited to western countries while only a few cases have been reported in Korea and Japan. In addition, new onset of pustular psoriasis by TNF-alpha blocker has b

Adjuvant interferon-alpha in malignant melanoma: current status.

High-risk surgically resected primary or loco-regional cutaneous malignant melanoma, although uncommon, can be associated with less than 50% 5-year survival; adjuvant therapy of proven efficacy is therefore appropriate. Since immunological control mechanisms seem to be important in the natural history of melanoma, biological agents have been the subject of many adjuvant studies. Most popular has been recombinant interferon. Well over 4000 patients have been entered into randomized studies. Results suggest that there may be a clinical benefit, most clearly in relapse-free but also perhaps in ov

Warfarin and vitamin K.

Warfarin and other 4-hydroxycoumarins are effective antithrombotic agents. They affect four blood coagulation proteins that act sequentially to produce thrombin. Coumarin therapy decreases the biological activity of these proteins, and therefore decreases the rate at which blood clots. As the mechanism by which these drugs act has become clear, it has also been found that vitamin K will overcome the effects of coumarin anticoagulation and can be used to control bleeding side effects of coumarin therapy. Vitamin K is necessary for activity of a liver enzyme, the vitamin K-dependent carboxylase.
