Neurobiological and genetic correlates of the dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Approximately 10%-30% of individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibit a dissociative subtype of the condition defined by symptoms of depersonalization and derealization. This study examined the psychometric evidence for the dissociative subtype of PTSD in a sample of young, primarily male post-9/11-era Veterans (n = 374 at baseline and n = 163 at follow-up) and evaluated its biological correlates with respect to resting state functional connectivity (default mode network [DMN]; n = 275), brain morphology (hippocampal subfield volume and cortical thickness; n = 280), neurocogni

Oral health and the postcontact adaptive transition: A contextual reconstruction of diet in Mórrope, Peru.

This work explores the effects of European contact on Andean foodways in the Lambayeque Valley Complex, north coast Peru. We test the hypothesis that Spanish colonization negatively impacted indigenous diet. Diachronic relationships of oral health were examined from the dentitions of 203 late-pre-Hispanic and 175 colonial-period Mochica individuals from Mórrope, Lambayeque, to include observations of dental caries, antemortem tooth loss, alveolar inflammation, dental calculus, periodontitis, and dental wear. G-tests and odds ratio analyses across six age classes indicate a range of statistical

Psychosexual development in adolescents and adults with disorders of sex development--results from the German Clinical Evaluation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Both biological and psychosocial factors influence psychosexual development. High levels of pre- and postnatal androgens lead to more male-typical behavior. So far, the influence of androgens on gender identity and sexual orientation is unclear. Disorders of sex development (DSDs) are heterogeneous genetic conditions with different levels of prenatal androgens resulting in variations of genital development. Through DSD, the role of the different factors, especially androgen exposure, on psychosexual development can be evaluated. AIM: The purpose of the study was to assess psycho

CNDP1 and Diabetic Kidney Disease: From Genetic Susceptibility to Therapeutic Targeting.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) affects a substantial proportion of individuals with diabetes mellitus and represents the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Familial aggregation studies consistently demonstrate that genetic factors contribute significantly to DKD susceptibility beyond metabolic and hemodynamic determinants. The carnosine dipeptidase 1 (CNDP1) gene on chromosome 18q22.3 has emerged as a compelling susceptibility locus, with a trinucleotide (CTG) repeat polymorphism in exon 2 that encodes the Mannheim variant, which has demonstrated protective associations in sele

Re-evaluating endometrial injury for IVF: was a promising approach abandoned prematurely? A critical review.

Since the early 2000s, endometrial injury has been proposed to enhance receptivity and improve pregnancy outcomes, particularly in individuals with recurrent implantation failure (RIF). However, randomized controlled trials have yielded conflicting results, creating ongoing debate about their clinical utility. This review synthesizes over 20 years of research through to 31 January 2025, examining whether methodological variations explain conflicting outcomes and assessing the clinical significance of reported benefits. The most comprehensive individual participant data meta-analysis to date, i

Understanding dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes production: Insights from an age-structured model.

Many models of within-host malaria infection dynamics have been formulated since the pioneering work of Anderson et al. in 1989. Biologically, the goal of these models is to understand what governs the severity of infections, the patterns of infectiousness, and the variation thereof across individual hosts. Mathematically, these models are based on dynamical systems, with standard approaches ranging from K-compartments ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to delay differential equations (DDEs), to capture the relatively constant duration of replication and bursting once a parasite infects a

Genetic susceptibility to radiation-related differentiated thyroid cancers: a systematic review of literature.

The first study establishing exposure to ionizing radiations (IRs) as a risk factor for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) was published 70 years ago. Given that radiation exposure causes direct DNA damage, genetic alterations in the different DNA repair mechanisms are assumed to play an important role in long-term IR-induced DNA damage prevention. Individual variations in DNA repair capacity may cause different reactions to damage made by IR exposure. The aim of this review is to recapitulate current knowledge about constitutional genetic polymorphisms found to be significantly associated wi

Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Human Seminal Plasma from Normozoospermic and Asthenozoospermic Individuals.

Seminal plasma is a complex mixture of secretions from various glands in the male genital tract. Compared to sperm cells, it contains important proteins that are both directly and indirectly associated with sperm motility. Here, we constructed quantitative proteomes of human seminal plasma from three normozoospermic and asthenozoospermic individuals. A total of 524 proteins were identified, and 366 of them were found to be quantified in all six samples. We first investigated the absolute expression features of these proteins and found that the variations of protein identification among differe

Evaluating mercury concentrations and body condition in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR), Florida.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg) are not well studied in free-ranging wildlife. Atmospheric deposition patterns of Hg have been studied in detail and have been modeled for both global and specific locations and often correlate to environmental impact. However, monitoring the impact of Hg deposition in wildlife is complicated due to local environmental conditions that can affect the transformation of atmospheric Hg to the biologically available forms (e.g., rainfall, humidity, pH, the ability of the environment to methylate Hg), as well as affect the accessibility to organisms for sampling. In th

Genome-wide analysis of copy number variation identifies candidate gene loci associated with the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Between 10 and 25% of individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) develop hepatic fibrosis leading to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To investigate the molecular basis of disease progression, we performed a genome-wide analysis of copy number variation (CNV) in a total of 49 patients with NAFLD [10 simple steatosis and 39 non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)] and 49 matched controls using high-density comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) microarrays. A total of 11 CNVs were found to be unique to individuals with simple steatosis, whilst 22 were common between s

Causal attribution among cancer survivors of the 10 most common cancers.

In an attempt to understand and cope with their diagnosis, individuals with cancer may develop beliefs about the cause of their illness and these causal attributions may impact psychosocial adjustment. Connecticut participants (N = 775) from the American Cancer Society's Study of Cancer Survivors-I completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing beliefs of the cause of their cancer and if they had contemplated the question "why me?" regarding their diagnosis. Written causal belief responses were coded into thematic categories and defined as either in (modifiable) or out (fixed) of an ind

Polymorphisms of the NER pathway genes, ERCC1 and XPD are associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma risk.

PURPOSE: Functional variation in DNA repair capacity through single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of key repair genes is associated with a higher risk of developing various types of cancer. Studies have focused on the nucleotide excision repair (NER) and base excision repair (BER) pathways. We investigated whether variant alleles in seven SNPs within these pathways increased the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. METHODS: DNA was extracted from prospectively collected blood specimens. The samples were genotyped for SNPs in NER genes (XPD Lys751Gln, XPD Asp312Asn, ERCC1 8092C/A, and ERCC1 11

Sex and age at exposure influence 131I biodistribution and dosimetry in Sprague-Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the biodistribution and absorbed dose of ¹³¹I is crucial for optimisation of radionuclide therapy, as well as for improving risk assessment following nuclear emergencies. After the Chernobyl accident, an increase in thyroid cancer among children was observed in regions affected by ¹³¹I fallout, particularly among young girls. Reasons for these age- and sex-specific differences in response to low doses of ¹³¹I are not fully understood, but variations in biodistribution and absorbed dose may be contributing factors. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the influenc

Chronic oral toxicity of lithium citrate in honeybees (Apis mellifera L.): impacts on survival, midgut histopathology and gut microbiota.

The search for effective alternatives to conventional acaricides has positioned lithium as a promising experimental candidate for controlling Varroa destructor; however, its physiological impact on the honeybee (Apis mellifera) remains insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the chronic oral toxicity of lithium citrate over a 10-day exposure period, focusing on survival, midgut histopathological changes, and gut microbiota dynamics. Newly emerged bees were exposed to sugar syrup containing 12.5, 25, and 50 mM lithium citrate. Mortality increased monotonically with dose: 10-day survi

CrohnTwin-X: An explainable digital twin framework for predicting postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease using multi-omics and clinical features.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a high rate of postoperative recurrence, posing major challenges for long-term management. Conventional clinical indices have limited capacity for individualized prognostic prediction. While Digital Twin (DT) technology-virtual replicas of individual patients-offers a transformative paradigm for clinical decision support, its application in CD postoperative management remains largely unexplored. METHODS: We developed CrohnTwin-X, an explainable digital twin framework that integrates transcriptomic and clinical features t

Analysis of genetic mutation characteristics in 40 Chinese patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is notable for its marked molecular heterogeneity and poor response to systemic therapy. Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) has facilitated the profiling of somatic alterations in HCC. However, the interpretation of panel-based genomic features such as tumor mutational burden (TMB), copy number alterations, and candidate gene fusions remains challenging, particularly in HBV-endemic Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: To explore the somatic mutation landscape of HCC using a targeted sequencing panel in a regional cohort and to descriptively assess it

Genetics and Epigenetics of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric condition with substantial heritability. Early genetic studies were often underpowered and produced limited reproducibility, but recent large-scale genomic and multi-omic approaches are beginning to elucidate the genetic architecture of OCD. Objectives: This review aims to synthesise current evidence from recent genomic and epigenomic studies on OCD and their implications for molecular pathways of pathogenesis, including endophenotypes. Methods: We reviewed peer-reviewed literature and preprints published in recent

Comprehensive Review of Blood Collection Techniques in Swine: Practical Guidelines for Veterinary Practice.

Swine veterinary practice involves a range of invasive procedures, including venipuncture and catheterization, for diagnostic, therapeutic, and epidemiological purposes. With the global expansion of pig production and the growing need for effective health monitoring, particularly in the context of infectious disease control programs, such as Aujeszky's disease and swine vesicular disease, the implementation of efficient and welfare-conscious blood collection methods has become a priority. The selection of an appropriate venous access route is particularly critical due to the wide variation in
