Thioglycolic-acid-stabilized CdTe quantum dots, synthesized directly in aqueous solution, are successfully conjugated with biotin and polyethylene glycol. Using these conjugates, we report the development of this kind of water-soluble quantum dot for immunofluorescent labeling of cancer cells. The results show that these conjugates have very low nonspecific binding and good stability against photobleaching, enabling them to be applied in many biological fields, such as cellular labeling, intracellular tracking, and other imaging applications.

A new method of diagnosing cysticercus or larval stage of the human tapeworm, Taenia saginata, also known as Cysticercus bovis, in formalin-fixed bovine tissue was developed using a monoclonal antibody to T. saginata and avidin-biotin complex immunohistochemistry. Grossly recognizable viable and degenerate cysts were identifiable after immunohistochemical staining and could be differentiated from Sarcocystis, Actinobacillus, or non-cyst, normal bovine structures. Thenew test should permit laboratory confirmation of suspected T. saginata cysticercus lesions.

We describe a synthetic ligand, "DAKLI" (Dynorphin A-analogue Kappa LIgand), related to the opioid peptide dynorphin A. A single reactive amino group at the extended carboxyl terminus permits various reporter groups to be attached, such as 125I-labeled Bolton-Hunter reagent, fluorescein isothiocyanate, or biotin. These derivatives have high affinity and selectivity for the dynorphin (kappa opioid) receptor. An incidental finding is that untreated guinea pig brain membranes have saturable avidin binding sites.

Diagnosis of biotinidase deficiency is rare and usually made in infancy, through newborn screening or after presenting symptoms. We present the case of 19-year old male with progressive optic atrophy and in a second phase spinal cord syndrome unresponsive to immunosuppressive therapies. After diagnosis of profound biotinidase deficiency, oral biotin substitution was started with partial visual improvement and normalization of gait. This case highlights the possibility of late-onset biotinidase deficiency and its treatable character.

We describe a custom preparation of high-performance affinity columns based on 3.5 μm nonporous polymeric particles covalently modified with streptavidin. The sorbent was packed into a 2.1 × 20 mm column hardware compatible with pressures up to 10,000 psi (68 MPa). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the source of the extra small chromosome in a patient with karyotype 45,X[115]/46,X + mar[45]/46,XY[29].
METHODS: The SRYgene was detected by PCR, and the chromosome Y probe that labeled with biotin was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization.
RESULTS: SRY gene is detected positive and the mar chromosome showed positive signal with FISH in human chromosome Y probe pool.
CONCLUSION: The extra small chromosome is part of the chromosome Y.

We demonstrated previously that monocytes and macrophages are target cells for the Rho-modifying Clostridium botulinum C3 ADP-ribosyltransferase. Here, we report the construction, expression and characterization of a recombinant streptavidin-C3 fusion protein which allows for delivery of biotin-labelled molecules into the cytosol of macrophages via enzymatically inactive C3bot1E174Q. The enzyme domain of diphtheria toxin was used as cargo to demonstrate proof of principle. This transport system could represent an attractive tool for experimental monocyte/macrophage pharmacology.

CdTe@SiO(2) fluorescent particles were synthesized via hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. Uniform luminophore-doped silica nanoparticles with 100nm in diameter were obtained using microemulsion method and characterized by SEM. Antibody proteins were successfully conjugated to the fluorescent particles by the reaction of avidin and biotin, which were confirmed by fluorescence spectra. CdTe@SiO(2) fluorescent particles were potentially useful for the applications in biolabeling and imaging.
