The removal of steroid and phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) from an aqueous environment was investigated using magnetic particles encapsulated by a duo-molecularly imprinted polymer (duo-MIP). The effect of environmental variables on the binding efficiency was studied. Experimental results showed that the amount of EDCs adsorbed was neither affected by up to 10.0 mM NaCl nor significantly interfered by up to 10.0 mg/L humic acid. Negligible influence was observed from pH 3.3 to pH 6.8, but a decrease started at pH 9. Freundlich isotherm parameters indicated binding capacities in

Immobilization is a fundamental method to improve both enzyme activity and stability. In the present work, the process previously described for immobilizing laccase - an enzyme oxidizing phenolic compounds - onto fumed silica was optimized, in order to efficiently produce industrially relevant amounts of a nanobiocatalyst for biological micropollutant elimination, whilst saving 80% of surface modification agent (3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane) and 90% of cross-linker (glutaraldehyde). Minimized losses during preparation and favorable effects of immobilization yielded conjugates with drasticall

Neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are influenced by both genetic abnormalities and environmental toxicants. Among environmental risk factors, endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and pharmaceutical drugs such as valproic acid (VPA) have been associated with an increased risk of autism. In this study, human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived forebrain organoids were used to model early neurodevelopmental disruptions induced by BPA and VPA exposure. On day 62 of differentiation, forebrain organoids were treated with physiologica

Edible fungi serve as efficient bioconverters, transforming lignocellulosic wastes into valuable fungal proteins by extracellular enzyme systems (e.g., laccases). However, the functional characterization of these lignocellulolytic enzymes is still a major challenge, limiting the strategic application of fungal systems in targeted biodegradation. Here, we developed a versatile, non-transformative siRNA delivery platform for rapid gene function analysis in the edible fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. Using spray-induced (SIGS) in mycelia, injection-induced (IIGS) in fruiting bodies, and co-culture-ind

Endothelial dysfunction is a central mechanism linking type 2 diabetes (T2D) to cardiovascular complications, and environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals may further perturb vascular homeostasis. Bisphenol S (BPS), widely used as a bisphenol A substitute, is increasingly detected in human and environmental samples, but its impact on endothelial morphology in the context of pre-existing metabolic disease remains poorly defined. Here, we used high-content imaging and Cell Painting to determine whether exposure to 0.1 µM BPS for 96 h induces distinct morphology-based responses in primary hum

Emerging evidence suggests structural analogues of bisphenol A (BPA), including the increasingly used substitute bisphenol P (BPP), pose substantial reproductive risks. However, BPP's ovarian toxicity remains uncharacterized. This study used an integrated approach combining in vivo models, network toxicology, transcriptomics, molecular docking, and biophysical techniques to elucidate the mechanisms of BPP-induced ovarian injury in peripubertal female mice. Eight-week BPP exposure caused significant ovarian injury, including follicular atresia, disorganized granulosa cells, elevated DNA damage,

This study compares, for the firt time, the use of three different ethylene glycol-based extractant solvents in dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) for the determination of four bisphenols (i.e., BPF, BPA, BPAP, and BPAF) in edible oils by liquid chromatography-diode array detector (LC-DAD). The extractants studied were: pure ethylene glycol (EG), a deep eutectic solvent or DES (i.e., chlorine chloride (ChCl) and EG, 1:2 M ratio), and a magnetic deep eutectic solvent or MDES (i.e., ChCl, EG and iron chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O), 1:4:1 M ratio). Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor. Excessive BPA intake can damage the structure and function of the respiratory tract. Dietary selenium (Se) deficiency may also cause immune tissue damage. To investigate the potential mechanism of BPA on tracheal damage in selenium-deficient chickens and the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in this process, we established in vitro and in vivo Se deficiency and BPA exposure models and screened out miR-155 for follow-up experiments. We further predicted and confirmed the targeting relationship between miR-155 and TRAF3 using TargetScan and dual luciferase a

As a heterogeneous reproductive disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can be caused by genetic, diet, and environmental factors. Bisphenol A (BPA) can induce PCOS and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to direct exposure; however, whether these phenotypes persist in future unexposed generations is not currently understood. In a previous study, we observed that transgenerational NAFLD persisted in female medaka for five generations (F4) after exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration (10 μg/L) of BPA. Here, we demonstrate PCOS in the same F4 generation female medaka t

Bisphenol AF (BPAF), an emerging environmental endocrine disruptor, has been detected in surface waters worldwide and has adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The accumulation of BPAF in oceans and its potential toxic effect on marine organisms are important concerns. In this study, the effects of BPAF (10, 100, 1, and 5 mg/L) on marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were evaluated, including effects on the survival rate, heart rate, hatchability, morphology, and gene expression in embryos. The survival rate of marine medaka embryos was significantly lower after treatment with 5 mg/L BPAF than i

PURPOSE: Recent increase in incidence of meningiomas suggests the need to search for new risk factors. Leptin, a potentially pro-angiogenic and proliferative agent, could be a candidate for this role, as its expression correlates with body mass index (BMI). Because development of meningioma has also been linked to sex hormones, bisphenol A (BPA), a known xenoestrogen, can also be taken into consideration as a potential risk factor. The aim of this study was to determine plasma concentrations of both substances in patients with meningiomas and to match it to patients with gliomas - a group of b

Contaminants in food have severely threatened human health, and appropriate antioxidants derived from food could reduce impairment risk. Lactoferrin from milk could control iron concentration in the blood to ameliorate oxidative stress, which is also required for sperm maturation, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study used mice with spermatogenetic dysfunction caused by bisphenol A (BPA) and cadmium (Cd) to evaluate the ameliorative effects of lactoferrin and milk (bioactive substances). BPA (50 mg/kg) and Cd (1.6 mg/kg) caused severe damage to testis, including globa

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are a heterogeneous group of natural or synthetic chemicals capable of interfering with hormonal regulation. Widely present in plastics, cosmetics, pesticides, food packaging, and household products, they contribute to constant human exposure. Compounds such as bisphenol A, phthalates, parabens, dioxins, and certain pesticides are among the most studied. Their mechanisms of action include interaction with hormone receptors, modulation of gene expression through epigenetic changes, disruption of steroidogenesis, and interference with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal

In utero co-exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds can perturb fetal development. However, the effect of co-exposure on pivotal regulatory genes has seldom been investigated. We explored the effects of in utero co-exposure to cadmium (Cd), bisphenol A (BPA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on master regulator genes. We recruited 284 healthy pregnant women, of whom 262 provided both cord blood and placenta samples, and 200 had all measurements taken. Placental Cd, cord blood BPA and total PCBs in the exposed group were higher than a reference group. KISS1 expression level in placental t

Bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread environmental endocrine disruptor, can cross the blood-brain barrier and exert neurotoxic effects closely associated with depression pathogenesis. However, the precise molecular targets and signaling pathways mediating BPA-induced depression remain poorly understood. This study integrated network toxicology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, GEO transcriptomic dataset analysis, and in vivo experimental validation in mice to systematically investigate the potential toxicological targets and underlying mechanisms of BPA in depression. The study evaluates the degradation of a mixture of frequently detected endocrine disrupting chemicals in municipal wastewater using six sequential biological-advanced oxidation treatment systems. The evaluated systems include UV, H2O2, and UV/H2O2 applied before or after biological treatment. The performance of the conventional municipal treatment plant was compared with sequential processes under previously optimized operating conditions (pH ≈ 5 (AOP), 7 (bio), 450 W UV power, 2.0 mM H₂O₂, reaction time for AOP: 60 min, and bio process: 6 h). The conventional system achieved only 36.41 ± 0.5

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, organochlorine pesticides, and heavy metal ions, pose serious threats to reproductive health by interfering with hormonal balance and molecular signaling pathways. Recent research had expanded our understanding of these compounds has beyond their traditional role in hormone receptor interference. EDCs can trigger lasting epigenetic changes, including abnormal DNA methylation, histone modifications, RNA methylation, and altered regulation of non-coding RNA, which can impair reproductive functions such as gametogenes

Lipidomics is a powerful approach for investigating lipid alterations in complex biological systems. However, conventional liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) may be limited in non-targeted studies due to the high structural diversity and wide concentration range of lipid species. In this work, an optimized comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC×LC-HRMS) workflow was developed for non-targeted lipidomics. The method combines reversed-phase (RP) separation in the first chromatographic dimension with hydrophilic

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the protective role of melatonin against Bisphenol A (BPA)-induced oxidative stress in the testes of adult mice.
METHODS: Adult male mice were orally administered 50 mg/kg BPA for 30 days, with or without melatonin (20 mg/kg). Testicular function, network pharmacology targets, melatonin receptor 1 A (MT1R) expression, oxidative stress markers, and mitochondrial function were assessed. Testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and proteins associated with steroid hormone synthesis were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and apoptosis by TUNEL.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that is widely present in aquatic environments. Much research has confirmed that BPA exerts certain toxic effects on the reproduction and development of aquatic organisms. However, current toxicological studies on the changes in gut microbiota and fatty acid metabolism in aquatic organisms exposed to BPA still need to be further elucidated. In this study, Gobiocypris rarus were exposed to BPA at concentrations of 0, 1, 15, and 225 μg/L for 21 days to investigate changes in intestinal microbiota and fatty acid metabolism. Techniques includin
