Osteogenesis imperfecta. Radiographic classification, natural history, and treatment of spinal deformities.

The natural history of the radiographic changes associated with osteogenesis imperfecta was recorded for sixty-four patients. Detailed clinical data regarding spinal deformities were available for forty-three patients. The patients could be placed in six well defined groups on the basis of a cluster of radiographic changes. The radiographic criteria used to classify patients who had osteogenesis imperfecta included the shape, dimensions, and appearance of the long bones; the presence of a trefoil pelvis and protrusio acetabuli; and the shape of the vertebrae. Patients can be classified more ac

Clinical use of an improved processed bovine cartilage for contour defects.

We have combined irradiation with a new chemical processing to cross-link the collagen of bovine cartilage, thereby stabilizing the collagen molecule and rendering it antigenically inert and dimensionally stable. Irradiated allograft cartilage has been successfully used for repair of facial contour defects since the 1950s, but the usefulness of this material has been limited by lack of availability. Chemically processed bovine cartilage had previously been used, but the implants were subject to slow degradation and were usually absorbed completely within 2 years. After first testing this new m

Using deep learning generated CBCT contours for online dose assessment of prostate SABR treatments.

Prostate Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) is an ultra-hypofractionated treatment where small setup errors can lead to higher doses to organs at risk (OARs). Although bowel and bladder preparation protocols reduce inter-fraction variability, inconsistent patient adherence still results in OAR variability. At many centers without online adaptive machines, radiation therapists use decision trees (DTs) to visually assess patient setup, yet their application varies. To evaluate our center's DTs, we employed deep learning-generated cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) contours to estim

CT-guided CBCT multi-organ segmentation using a multi-channel conditional consistency diffusion model for lung cancer radiotherapy.

In cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)-guided adaptive radiotherapy, rapid and precise segmentation of organs-at-risk (OARs) is essential for accurate dose verification and online replanning. The quality of CBCT images obtained with current onboard CBCT imagers and clinical imaging protocols, however, is often compromised by artifacts such as scatter and motion, particularly for thoracic CBCT scans. These artifacts not only degrade image contrast but also obscure anatomical boundaries, making accurate segmentation on CBCT images significantly more challenging compared to planning CT images. T

Planning Benchmark Study for Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy of Pancreas Carcinomas With Simultaneously Integrated Boost and Protection: Results of the DEGRO/DGMP Working Group on Stereotactic Radiation Therapy and Radiosurgery.

PURPOSE: The proximity or overlap of planning target volume (PTV) and organs-at-risk (OARs) poses a major challenge in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) of pancreatic cancer (PACA). This international treatment planning benchmark study investigates whether simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) and simultaneous integrated protection (SIP) concepts in PACA SBRT can lead to improved and harmonized plan quality. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multiparametric specification of desired target doses (gross target volume [GTV]D50%, GTVD99%, PTVD95%, and PTV0.5cc) with 2 prescription doses of GTVD50%

[Investigations on the ultrastructural cytology of branchiomeric paragangliomas (author's transl)].

The paragangliomas of the jugular and carotid bodies are growth processes which show varying histological and cytological patterns. The real nature of these lesions is still a matter of discussion. In this study 6 jugular and 3 carotid body tumours were investigated using the electron microscope. The main components were irregular cells with short and long cytoplasmic processes closely packed and mostly arranged in complexes. The ultrastructural cytology of the jugular and carotid bodies showed no striking differences. The great majority of the cells exhibits a clear similarity to the cells of

Management of Gynecomastia in Patients With Different Body Types: Considerations on 312 Consecutive Treated Cases.

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia is a common finding in male subjects which incidence varies widely in the world population. In adolescents, it is frequently temporary but, if it becomes persistent, it generates considerable embarrassment, inducing the patients to seek surgical consultation. Even in patients with good body contour, gynecomastia creates even greater distress considering the special attention given by these subjects to their physical appearance. The authors present their experience in the treatment of gynecomastia comparing different body types of patients with the aim to investigate di

Protective Effect of CP690550 in MPTP-Induced Parkinson's Like Behavioural, Biochemical and Histological Alterations in Mice.

Janus-activated kinases (JAKs) are well known to play a physiological as well as pathological role in several disease conditions such as autoimmune disorders. The present study evaluated the therapeutic potential of CP690550 (pan-JAK inhibitor) in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tertahydropyridine (MPTP) model of Parkinson's disease. Intrastriatal administration of MPTP (30 micromol in 2 microl) produced a significant alteration in behavioural (bar test and block test). Biochemical investigations in serum and brain homogenate revealed a significant alteration in the JAK-mediated cytokine levels. MPT

Close linkage between blood total ketone body levels and B-type natriuretic peptide levels in patients with cardiovascular disorders.

In patients with cardiovascular disorders, blood total ketone body (TKB) levels increase with worsening heart failure and are consumed as an alternative fuel to fatty acid and glucose. We investigated factors contributing to the increase in the blood TKB levels in patients with cardiovascular disorders. The study population consisted of 1030 consecutive patients who underwent cardiac catheterization. Covariance structure analyses were performed to clarify the direct contribution of hemodynamic parameters, including the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), left ventricular end-systo

Clinical evaluation of autologous fat graft for facial deformity: a case series study.

OBJECTIVES: The use of fat grafts in maxillofacial sculpturing is currently a common technique. Unlike fillers, autologous fats unite with facial tissues, but long-term results may still be unsatisfactory. Sharing long-term follow-ups can be helpful in making outcomes more predictable. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data from patients who were admitted from 2014 to 2016 for fat augmentation were collected. In all cases, fat grafts were injected by blunt cannula using a tunneling technique in different planes. A fan shape order for the malar, periorbital, nasolabial fold, mandibular angle and body

Predictive selection and evaluation of appropriate functional peptides for intestinal delivery with a porous silica gel.

Bioactive peptides have a positive impact on body functions and conditions and may influence health. However, peptides are degraded by digestive enzymes, such as pepsin in the stomach when ingested orally. In order to solve this problem, we previously focused on porous silica gel and found that by using calcined silica gel, hydrophobic and negatively charged peptides could be efficiently delivered into the intestine, because peptides adsorbed on the cavity of the silica gel could be protected from enzymatic degradation. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to develop peptides whose physicoch

Preliminary results of a new workflow for MRI/CT-based image-guided brachytherapy in cervical carcinoma.

PURPOSE: We propose a method of image-guided brachytherapy (IGBT) that combines MRI-based target volume delineation for the first fraction with CT datasets of subsequent fractions, using an automatic, applicator-based co-registration, and report our preliminary experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MRI of the first fraction was used for the first brachytherapy planning. For each subsequent brachytherapy fraction, after the same applicator insertion, a new CT scan with the applicator in place was obtained. The MR image set was registered to the subsequent brachytherapy treatment planning CT u

Novel reconstruction of the orientation of the pectoral girdle in sauropods.

The orientation of the scapulocoracoid in sauropod dinosaurs is reconstructed based on comparative anatomical investigations of pectoral girdles of extant amniotes. In the reconstruction proposed here, the scapula of sauropods stands at an angle of at least 55 degrees to the horizontal plane in mechanical coherence with the sternal apparatus including the coracoids. The coracoids are oriented cranioventrally to the rib cage and the glenoid is directed mediolaterally, which allows the humerus to swing in a sagittal plane. The inclination of the scapula to the horizontal plane is reconstructed f
