Computed tomography derived body composition and risk of anastomotic leakage following rectal cancer surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anastomotic leakage (AL) remains a severe postoperative complication following restorative rectal cancer surgery, adversely impacting morbidity, quality of life, and oncological outcomes. Computed tomography (CT)-derived body composition metrics have been proposed as more precise predictors of AL than conventional measures such as BMI METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42023471537). PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies published between January 2010 and July 2025 asse

Problematic Social Media Use and Its Associations with Loneliness, Bullying Perpetration, and Negative Body Image Among Adolescents: The Mediating Roles of Secure Attachment and Resilience.

Background: Problematic social media use (PSMU) has become increasingly prevalent among adolescents and is consistently associated with a wide range of adverse mental health outcomes, underscoring its growing significance as a contemporary psychosocial and developmental concern. However, empirical research examining protective psychological factors associated with relationships between PSMU and psychological difficulties remains limited. The present study examined whether resilience and secure attachment were associated with the relationships between PSMU and loneliness, bullying perpetration,

Rikkunshito attenuates nutritional decline and skeletal muscle loss during preoperative chemotherapy for esophageal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Rikkunshito is a traditional Japanese herbal medicine known to alleviate chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal symptoms. However, the clinical impact of rikkunshito on patients undergoing neoadjuvant or conversion chemotherapy followed by curative surgery for esophageal cancer remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed 57 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent curative surgery with preoperative chemotherapy between April 2021 and December 2024. Patients who did and did not receive rikkunshito during chemotherapy were assigned to the rikkunshito and control groups, respectively.

Individual heterogeneity in ixodid tick infestation and prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in a northern community of small mammalian hosts.

Heterogeneous aggregation of parasites between individual hosts is common and regarded as an important factor in understanding transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases. Lyme disease is vectored by generalist tick species, yet we have a limited understanding of how individual heterogeneities within small mammal host populations affect the aggregation of ticks and likelihood of infection. Male hosts often have higher parasite and infection levels than females, but whether this is linked to sexual body size dimorphism remains uncertain. Here, we analysed how host species, sex, and body mass

Fear of Death and Examination Performance in a Medical Gross Anatomy Course with Cadaveric Dissection.

Cadaveric dissection offers an important opportunity for students to develop their ideas about death and dying. However, it remains largely unknown how this experience impacts medical students' fear of death. The current study aimed to address this gap by describing how fear of death changed during a medical gross anatomy dissection course and how fear of death was associated with examination performance. Fear of death was surveyed at the beginning of the course and at each of the four block examinations using three of the eight subscales from the Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale: Fear of

A clinical course of a patient with anorexia nervosa receiving surgery for superior mesenteric artery syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a well-known but relatively rare complication of anorexia nervosa. Although several reports have proposed surgery for SMA syndrome associated with anorexia nervosa, these have shown poor outcomes or did not reveal the long-term weight course. Thus, the long-term effectiveness of surgery for SMA syndrome in such cases remains unclear. This case report describes a patient with anorexia nervosa who underwent surgery for SMA syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old woman presented with anorexia nervosa when she was 16 years old. She also

Hamate Body Fractures: a Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Due to the rarity and often discrete nature of hamate body fractures, timely diagnosis requires a high level of suspicion on the part of the clinician. Here, the authors have compiled the findings from 6 cohort studies and 33 case reports describing hamate body fractures in order to summarize the natural history, management, and outcomes of these infrequent injuries. RECENT FINDINGS: Fractures of the hamate body typically occur in the coronal plane through axial loading of the metacarpals or loading in the transverse plane by a compressive force. Standard radiographs of the

Selective effects of protein 4.1N deficiency on neuroendocrine and reproductive systems.

Protein 4.1N, a member of the protein 4.1 family, is highly expressed in the brain. But its function remains to be fully defined. Using 4.1N-/- mice, we explored the function of 4.1N in vivo. We show that 4.1N-/- mice were born at a significantly reduced Mendelian ratio and exhibited high mortality between 3 to 5 weeks of age. Live 4.1N-/- mice were smaller than 4.1N+/+ mice. Notably, while there were no significant differences in organ/body weight ratio for most of the organs, the testis/body and ovary/body ratio were dramatically decreased in 4.1N-/- mice, demonstrating selective effects of

Validity of quantitative ultrasound and bioelectrical impedance analysis for measuring bone density and body composition in children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess body composition in children has limitations including expense, lack of portability, and exposure to radiation. The aims of this study were to examine: (1) validity of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) against DXA for measuring bone density and (2) the validity of in-built algorithm of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for measuring body composition in children (8-13 years) living in New Zealand. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Total body less head (TBLH), bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and body composition wer

Body Composition Over the Menstrual and Oral Contraceptive Cycle in Trained Females.

PURPOSE: The influence of female sex hormones on body fluid regulation and metabolism homeostasis has been widely studied. However, it remains unclear whether hormone fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle (MC) and with oral contraceptive (OC) use affect body composition (BC). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate BC over the MC and OC cycle in well-trained females. METHODS: A total of 52 eumenorrheic and 33 monophasic OC-taking well-trained females participated in this study. Several BC variables were measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis 3 times in the eumenorrheic

Determinants and survival implications of low bone mineral density in end-stage renal disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Reduced bone mineral density (BMD) is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and predicts outcomes. The chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder contributes to low BMD in ESRD; however, the impact of classical risk factors for osteoporosis in the general population, such as body weight and fat mass, remains less well defined in ESRD subjects. METHODS: BMD, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), nutritional status (subjective global assessment), hand grip strength and multiple biomarkers were investigated in 361 patients (218 males; 60.4%) starting on d

Reduced cardiovagal baroreflex gain in visceral obesity: implications for the metabolic syndrome.

The influence of excess total and abdominal adiposity on cardiovagal baroreflex gain remains unclear. We tested the hypotheses that cardiovagal baroreflex gain would be reduced in men with 1) higher [higher fat (HF), mass >20 kg, n = 11] compared with lower [lower fat (LF), mass <20 kg, n = 10] levels of total body and abdominal fat and 2) higher abdominal visceral fat (HAVF; n = 10) compared with total body weight- and subcutaneous fat-matched peers with lower abdominal visceral fat (LAVF; n = 7) levels. To accomplish this, we measured cardiovagal baroreflex gain (modified Oxford technique),

Investigation of the genetic aetiology of Lewy body diseases with and without dementia.

Up to 80% of Parkinson's disease patients develop dementia, but time to dementia varies widely from motor symptom onset. Dementia with Lewy bodies presents with clinical features similar to Parkinson's disease dementia, but cognitive impairment precedes or coincides with motor onset. It remains controversial whether dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia are distinct conditions or represent part of a disease spectrum. The biological mechanisms underlying disease heterogeneity, in particular the development of dementia, remain poorly understood, but will likely be the key to

Rethinking circulatory management in thoracoabdominal aortic repair: split-body perfusion for continuous end-organ flow.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair involving the proximal descending thoracic aorta remains among the most technically demanding operations in cardiovascular surgery. Conventional approaches may require systemic hypothermia and periods of circulatory arrest to facilitate proximal aortic reconstruction, potentially exposing the brain, spinal cord, and abdominal viscera to ischemic injury. Strategies that permit complex proximal reconstruction while maintaining continuous perfusion to multiple vascular territories remain limited. We describe a split-body circulation technique designe

Effect of a Defined Intake of a Soy-Based Protein-Rich Supplement on Body Composition and Eating Behaviour in Overweight Women: A Secondary Analysis of the ACOORH Trial.

Background: High-protein dietary strategies have been shown to support weight reduction and improve body composition during lifestyle interventions. However, evidence regarding long-term dietary adaptations and their association with body composition in overweight women remains limited. This secondary analysis of the ACOORH randomised controlled trial investigated whether a protein-rich soy-based meal replacement promotes sustained dietary protein intake and favourable body composition changes in female participants. Methods: Female participants from the multicentre ACOORH RCT with complete di
