A general description of the different syndromes of cranio-tubular dysplasia is given and 3 cases are described. Surgery can be difficult because of the marble hard bone. The possibility of complications such as recurrence, profuse bleeding and medullary compression with fatal results is stressed. The results of treatment remain poor.

Sclerosteosis is a unique autosomal recessive condition in which skeletal overgrowth is associated with syndactyly and digital malformation. Analysis of the course and clinical features in 25 affected individuals showed that the condition is progressive and potentially lethal. Facial palsy and deafness are common complications and raised intracranial pressure may develop. The clinical and radiographic stigmata of sclerosteosis permit differentiation from the other disorders of the "osteopetrosis" or "Albers-Schönberg disease" group, in which bony thickening and cranial nerve palsy occur.

Certain skeletal dysplasias represent excellent examples of genetic heterogeneity. Clinical recognition of their individual characteristics is a fundamental prerequisite for an understanding of their pathogenetic mechanisms and for the identification of their basic molecular defects.

Metaphyseal osteopathy, otherwise known as hypertrophic osteodystrophy, is a disease that causes pyrexia and lethargy accompanied by pain in the thoracic and pelvic limbs of rapidly growing large-breed dogs. While metaphyseal osteopathy has been descibed in association with slipped capital femoral epiphysis in cats, it has not previously been reported as a cause of limb pain and pyrexia in this species. A 7-month-old British Shorthair cat presented with a 1 month history of pyrexia, lethargy and pain in all limbs. Investigation included radiographs of the limbs and chest, abdominal ultrasound,

BACKGROUND: Pyle's disease is a rare skeletal dysplasia involving the metaphyses of long bones. To date, spinal involvement has been only rarely described in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To show that spinal changes, which are an expression of the same growth defect of the long bones, are an important and constant sign of the disease in the families studied.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The radiographic skeletal changes in five patients have been observed.
RESULTS: The pathognomonic metaphyseal widening of tubular bones (known as the 'Erlenmeyer flask sign') was associated with the spinal changes in

A survey study of growth cartilage abnormalities in bovine bone dysplasias revealed that a disorder in Holstein cattle called bulldog calf closely resembles human achondrogenesis Type II. Substantial amounts of Type I collagen and other non Type II collagens were detected in the bulldog cartilage which was comprised primarily of extensive vascular canals and cells having the characteristics of hypertrophic and degenerative chondrocytes normally found in the growth plate. It is proposed that chondrocytes throughout the bulldog growth cartilage prematurely differentiate into hypertrophic cells t

We have studied a male Japanese infant with severe upper limb brachymesomelia, glomerulocystic renal dysplasia, abnormalities of the cranium and face, corneal opacities, and a possible congenital heart defect. He was born at term and died on the 10th day of heart and kidney failure. Review of the literature failed to show a similar case. Glomerulocystic renal dysplasia has been reported in association with a variety of the nonskeletal malformations but has not previously been described in association with bony malformations.

Seventeen foals with angular limb deformities of the distal end of the radius (valgus: 26 limbs), distal end of the tibia (valgus: 6 limbs), and distal end of the 3rd metacarpal bone/metatarsal bone (varus: 4 limbs) were treated surgically by means of hemicircumferential division of the periosteum proximal to the involved growth plate, at the concave side of the bone. There was some correction in all cases. The best results were seen in the radius, where 22 of 25 limbs were corrected to a deviation of 4 degrees or less. Satisfactory correction was obtained in the 6 tibias, the 2 third metacarp

Heart valves exhibit a highly-conserved stratified structure exquisitely designed to counter biomechanical forces delivered over a lifetime. Heart valve structure and competence is maintained by heart valve cells through a process of continuous turnover extracellular matrix (ECM). Degenerative (myxomatous) mitral valve disease (DMVD) is an important disease associated with aging in both dogs and humans. DMVD is increasingly regarded as a disease with identifiable signaling mechanisms that control key genes associated with regulation and dysregulation of ECM homeostasis. Initiating stimuli for

Fibrous dysplasia is benign developmental disorders of bone where normal lamellar cancellous bone is replaced with immature fibro-osseus tissue resulting in poorly formed trabeculae of immature woven bone. It may affect one (monostotic) or multiple bones (polyostotic). Polyostotic disease is less common, 20-25% of patients, mostly in children below 10 years old and tends to enlarge beyond bone maturation ration which can cause pain, progressive damage and higher tendency of pathological fractures.(1) We report a case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia present on bilateral tibia diaphysis.
