PURPOSE: This prospective study examined the psychometric properties of the adapted Dutch translation of the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaire in patients with isolated unilateral lower fracture (LEF) or upper extremity fracture (UEF).
METHODS: Patients (N = 458) completed the SMFA, WHOQOL-BREF, and the RAND-36 at time of diagnosis (i.e. pre-injury status), 1, and 2 weeks post-fracture. Principal axis factoring was performed, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients (α) and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Furthermore, Pearson's product-moment

BACKGROUND: Persistent pain in the region of implanted hardware following fracture fixation commonly leads to implant removal. This prospective study evaluated patient outcomes and pain reduction following removal of orthopaedic hardware implanted for fracture fixation.
METHODS: Sixty patients who had been treated previously for a fracture and complained of pain in the region of the fracture fixation hardware constituted the study cohort. Patients were carefully examined by the treating physician to rule out other causes of pain such as infection and nonunion. Baseline data were recorded preo

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of posttraumatic diaphyseal bone defects (BD) calls on a number of techniques including bone transport techniques: isolated shortening, compression-distraction at the fracture site, shortening followed by lengthening in a corticotomy distant from the site and segmental bone transport.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The multicenter retrospective study combined 38 cases: 22 cases of initial diaphyseal bone defect and 16 cases of secondary diaphyseal BD, sometimes associated with metaphyseal or metaphyseal-epiphyseal BD, involving the humerus, the forearm, the femur and the ti

Melorheostosis is a rare nongenetic developmental anomaly first described in 1922 by Léri and Joanny. Its etiology is unknown. Patients present at any age, and both sexes are affected equally. Onset is usually insidious, with deformity of the extremity, pain, limb stiffness and limitation of motion in the joints first manifesting in late childhood or early adolescence and progressing into adult life. The characteristic radiographic appearance consists of irregular hyperostotic changes of the cortex, generally on one side of the bone, resembling melted wax dripping down one side of a candle. Th

It has long been known that fluoride "hardens" mineralized tissues. Fluoride ingestion through drinking water in areas naturally rich in fluoride leads to osteosclerosis, known as endemic fluorosis. The first suggestion that fluoride be used in the treatment of osteoporosis was made in 1964. However, despite 30 years of research, the treatment remains controversial. Fluoride has a dual effect on osteoblasts. On the one hand, it increases the birthrate of osteoblasts at tissue level by a mitogenic effect on precursors of osteoblasts, while on the other hand it has a toxic effect on the individu

Malignant melanoma solitary metastases to bone or skeletal muscle occur in 0.8% of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate features of skeleton and muscle metastases with multimodality imaging and review the oncological outcome. Thirteen patients with melanoma metastases from January 2006 to February 2016 were included. Histologic confirmation was obtained. Imaging studies included computed tomography (CT), MRI, and/or positron emission tomography/CT. Treatment received and BRAF status were recorded. Differences in BRAF status and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using the χ-test. A

Bone and joint abnormalities occur frequently in sickle cell anemia but are rare in sickle cell trait. Long bone diaphyseal infarctions are distinctly unusual in sickle cell trait. We describe a patient with AS hemoglobin and symptomatic bone infarctions in the diaphyses and metadiaphyses of the long bones of the lower extremities and in the calcaneus. In addition, this patient manifested noninflammatory synovial effusions of the knee. The bone and joint manifestations of sickle cell trait are reviewed in the context of this case.

To develop a standard growth curve of the lower extremity in Korean children from 3 to 16 yr of age, the lengths from a total of 2087 normal long bone segments (582 femurs and 645 tibias in boys, and 417 femurs and 443 tibias in girls) were measured. Children were grouped by years of bone age, which was determined by using the Korean specific bone age standard; TW2-20 method. The growth spurt occurred in girls from eight to eleven years by bone age, and in boys from eleven to thirteen years. The mean tibial length relative to the mean femoral length was 0.78 in boys and 0.79 in girls. The over

Stress fractures are most common in the weight-bearing bones of the lower extremities and spine, but are rarely found in non-weight-bearing bones of the body. Stress fracture of the ulna is extremely rare. We report a case of complete stress fracture of ulna caused due to excessive push ups in a young athlete. Conservative management was successful in healing of fracture and returning this patient back to his previous activity level. Physician should have high index of suspicion, whenever they encounter a young athlete complaining of forearm pain.

Limb salvage in fungal osteomyelitis of the post-traumatic lower extremity represents a difficult clinical problem requiring aggressive management. We report lower extremity salvage by radical bony debridement, free tissue transfer, distraction osteogenesis with bone-docking, and a novel antifungal regimen in a clinical setting of infection with Scedosporium inflatum, historically requiring amputation in 100% of cases. We treated Scedosporium inflatum osteomyelitis of the tibia and calcaneus with radical debridement of infected bone, free partial medial rectus abdominis muscle flap coverage, t

Achondroplasia is the most common form of short limb dwarfism in humans. The shortening of the limb lengths in achondroplasia is widely described as "rhizomelic." While this appearance may be convincing clinically, the description is not necessarily true or helpful radiologically. The aims of this study, were therefore, to determine whether rhizomelic shortening is a true feature of achondroplasia at diagnosis in infancy. Humeral, radial, femoral, and tibial diaphyseal lengths were recorded by two independent observers from 22 skeletal surveys of infants with achondroplasia and compared with 1

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is a rare skeletal dysplasia characterized by linear striations of the long bones, osteosclerosis of the cranium, and extra-skeletal anomalies. We provide a comprehensive description of the skeletal phenotype in a French-Canadian girl with a moderate to severe form of sporadic OS-CS. Multiple medical problems, including anal stenosis and the Pierre-Robin sequence, were evident in the first few years of life. At 14 years, she was fully mobile, with normal intellect and stature. She suffered chronic lower extremity pain in the absence of fractur

This article reviews the clinical experience with cryosurgery (use of liquid nitrogen) and acrylic cementation (polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA) in the treatment of aggressive, benign bone sarcomas and the biologic basis of this technique. The results of 25 patients below the age of 21 treated by cryosurgery, with an average follow-up period of 60.8 months, are reported. Three approaches to surgical reconstruction were used: Group 1 (four patients) had cryosurgery with no reconstruction, Group 2 (13 patients) had bone graft reconstruction alone, and Group 3 (eight patients) had composite osteosyn

Benign fibrous histiocytoma (BFH) is a mesenchymal tumor which commonly affects the skin of extremities. Histologically, BFH of soft tissues and bone shows similar features, but BFH of the bone is rare with less than 100 cases reported worldwide and usually it involves tibia, femur, and pelvic bone. As far as the oral cavity is concerned, majority of the BFHs are found in the soft tissues of the buccal mucosa, gingiva, lower and upper lips, soft palate, and floor of the mouth. Occurrence of this tumor in the jaw bones is extremely rare as only one case of the maxilla and six cases of the mandi

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the efficiency of minimal invasive intralesional extended curettage in the treatment of osteoid osteomas of the extremities in children. Forty-seven children (29 males, 18 females; mean age 10.5 years; range 4-19 years) with osteoid osteoma of the extremities underwent minimal invasive intralesional extended curettage. The exact localization of the nidus was determined preoperatively by thin-section (1-1.5 mm) computed tomography scans, and complete excision of the nidus was performed using a modified burr-down technique. None of the procedures require

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of different look up tables (LUTs) on contrast enhancement in lower extremity angiography using the frequency subtraction method.
METHODS: A lower extremity vascular phantom was constructed, and contrast medium concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% were prepared. Imaging was performed using the frequency subtraction method, and each image was processed with different LUTs (linear, A, and C). The linear LUT at 100% concentration (linear-100%) served as the control. Contrast was quantified using profile curves, and subjective

BACKGROUND: Although varus inclination of the tibial plateau has increasingly been recognized as a major risk factor in the progression of Osteoarthritis of the knee (OA knee), little attention has been placed on the development of the varus inclination of the tibial plateau. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and may increase the risk of a stress fracture in the proximal tibia. To date, risk factors for varus inclination of the tibial plateau are rarely reported. In this study, we investigated Bone Mineral Density (BMD) as a risk factor of varus inclination of the tibial
