Torpid facial ulcerations may occur as a result of lesions involving the trigeminal fibers. These neurotrophic ulcerations have usually been observed after alcohol injection in the trigeminal ganglion. We report two cases associated with brainstem infarction. In both patients, the blink reflex was studied. The masseter inhibitory reflex was studied in one case. Analysis of these electrophysiological recordings can be of particular value in localizing the site of the lesion along the trigeminal pathway.

We reported a case of a 29-year-old man who had been in good health until contracting brain stem encephalitis due to a rubella virus 5 years previously, at which time the ECG revealed complete right bundle branch block and right axis deviation. The stapedial reflex is routinely used both in hearing evaluation and to distinguish cochlear from retrocochlear lesions. The present study was carried out on seven healthy volunteers in the hope of obtaining basic information about the physiological variables of stapedial reflex using hypoxic hypoxia. The results show that a short-term hypoxic hypoxia affects, for the most part, the muscle contraction velocity and the amplitude of the reflex, whereas the latency remains unchanged. This analysis reviews the autopsy findings in 16 patients treated with irradiation for thalamic and brain stem tumors. The primary tumor site prior to treatment was the thalamus in six, midbrain in two, and the pons in eight. Golgi technique was applied to the study of autopsied brain stems of mentally sane subjects and patients with paranoid schizophrenia. The geometry of neurons in magnocellular reticular nucleus was morphometrically assessed. Spiral-like primary dendrites were found and the orientation of secondary dendrites changed. In schizophrenic patients the cross-sectional area of neuronal soma, maximal radius of dendritic field, total dendrites length, the dendritic area span were decreased, and the dendrites' waviness increased.
