Adsorption of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions using activated carbon prepared from olive stone by ZnCl2 activation.

This study is aimed to remove Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption. As adsorbent, activated carbon prepared from olive stone, an agricultural solid by-product was used. Different activating agent (ZnCl(2)) amounts and adsorbent particle size were studied to optimize adsorbent surface area. The adsorption experiments were conducted at different parameters such as, adsorbent dose, temperature, equilibrium time and pH. According to the experiments results, the equilibrium time, optimum pH, adsorbent dosage were found 60 min, pH > 6 and 1.0 g/50 ml respectively. The kinetic data suppor

Effect of cadmium and chromium toxicity on the demography and population growth of Brachionus calyciflonrs and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera).

This paper reports on the assessment of the effect of Cd+2 and Cr+6 to the rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. patulus using life table demography and population growth. Based on acute toxicity tests, cadmium was nearly 100 times more toxic than chromium for both the rotifer species. Age-specific fecundity curves of both the brachionids showed increased offspring beyond the age of 4 days and after that the production nearly stabilized for about 10 days and later declined. At any given treatment, B. calyciflorus had the higher rate of offspring production than B. patulus. For any given roti

Transmembrane potential polarization, calcium influx, and receptor conformational state modulate the sensitivity of the imidacloprid-insensitive neuronal insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptor to neonicotinoid insecticides.

Neonicotinoid insecticides act selectively on insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Recent studies revealed that their efficiency was altered by the phosphorylation/dephosphorylation process and the intracellular signaling pathway involved in the regulation of nAChRs. Using whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology adapted for dissociated cockroach dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons, we demonstrated that intracellular factors involved in the regulation of nAChR function modulated neonicotinoid sensitivity. DUM neurons were known to express two α-bungarotoxin-insensitive nAChR sub

Online monitoring of BALB/3T3 metabolism and adhesion with multiparametric chip-based system.

A multiparametric chip-based system was employed to measure cell adhesion, metabolism, and response to metal compounds previously classified as cytotoxic in immortalized mouse fibroblasts (BALB/3T3 cell line). The system measures in parallel, online, and in label-free conditions the extracellular acidification rates (with pH-sensitive field effect transistors [ISFETs]), the cellular oxygen consumption (with amperometric electrode structures [Clark-type sensors]), and cell adhesion (with impedimetric interdigitated electrode structures [IDESs]). The experimental protocol was optimized to monito

Metals in human placenta: focus on the effects of cadmium on steroid hormones and leptin.

Cadmium and other metallic ions can act as metalloestrogens and endocrine disruptors of reproductive tissues and fetal development in mammals, including humans. The detrimental effects occur with respect to the synthesis of both steroid and polypeptide hormones in the placenta. Leptin is produced by the trophoblast and may regulate fetal organogenesis and development. In human term placentas, concentrations of toxic metals and their effects on steroidogenesis were assessed in healthy parturients (109 non-smokers and 99 smokers) in relation to tobacco smoking. Trace elements (cadmium, lead, iro

Functional and molecular effects of mercury compounds on the human OCTN1 cation transporter: C50 and C136 are the targets for potent inhibition.

The effect of mercury compounds has been tested on the organic cation transporter, hOCTN1. MeHg(+), Hg(2+), or Cd(2+) caused strong inhibition of transport. 1,4-Dithioerythritol (DTE), cysteine (Cys), and N-acetyl-l-cysteine reversed (NAC) the inhibition at different extents. 2-Aminoethyl methanethiosulfonate hydrobromide (MTSEA), a prototype SH reagent, exerted inhibition of transport similar to that observed for the mercurial agents. To investigate the mechanism of action of mercurials, mutants of hOCTN1 in which each of the Cys residues was substituted by Ala have been constructed, over-exp

Molecular Mechanisms of Effects of Lead and Cadmium Co-exposure on Atrial and Ventricular Myocardium: Soluble Salts Versus Nanoparticles.

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are ubiquitous xenobiotics associated with cardiovascular diseases. While Pb and Cd cardiotoxicity is well studied, the molecular mechanisms of their co-exposure are poorly understood. We aimed to investigate the cardiotoxic effects of subchronic co-exposure to soluble versus nanoparticle forms of Pb and Cd on the atrial and ventricular myocardium. Rats received 18 intraperitoneal injections of combined Pb(C2H3O2)2 (6.01 mg/kg b.w.) and CdCl2 (0.377 mg/kg b.w.) solution over 6 weeks (Pb+Cd group). Another group received 18 injections of combined PbO (2.32 mg/kg b.w.)

Effects of Mixtures of Emerging Pollutants and Drugs on Modulation of Biomarkers Related to Toxicity, Oxidative Stress, and Cancer.

Background/Objectives: Over time, the scientific community has developed a growing interest in the effects of mixtures of different compounds, for which there is currently no established evidence or knowledge, in relation to certain categories of xenobiotics. It is well known that exposure to pollutants causes oxidative stress, resulting in the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can affect signaling pathways that regulate the cell cycle, apoptosis, energy balance, and cellular metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sub-lethal concentrations of m

Contaminant-induced oxidative stress underlies biochemical, molecular and fatty acid profile changes, in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.).

Chemical contaminants such as heavy metals, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and drugs, are constantly found in the marine environment determining the interest of the scientific community for their side effects on animal welfare, food safety and security. Few studies have analyzed the effects of mix of contaminants in fish, in terms of molecular and nutritional composition response, beside it is indispensable to think more and more on effect of contaminants along the food web system. In this study, Sparus aurata specimens were exposed for 15 days, by diet, to a mixture of carbamazepine (

Coresistance to Benzalkonium Chloride Disinfectant and Heavy Metal Ions in Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria innocua Swine Isolates from China.

The development of coresistance to disinfectants and heavy metals contributes to the fitness of Listeria spp. in foods or food processing environments, where life-threatening Listeria monocytogenes coexist and coevolve with other Listeria spp. Despite extensive research on L. monocytogenes, coresistance to disinfectants and heavy metals is less documented for other Listeria spp. In this study, we screened 30 L. monocytogenes and 27 Listeria innocua isolates recovered from 273 swine samples for resistance to quaternary ammonium compound benzalkonium chloride (BC) and to heavy metals cadmium (Cd

Effect of heavy metals on pH buffering capacity and solubility of Ca, Mg, K, and P in non-spiked and heavy metal-spiked soils.

In many parts of the world, soil acidification and heavy metal contamination has become a serious concern due to the adverse effects on chemical properties of soil and crop yield. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pH (in the range of 1 to 3 units above and below the native pH of soils) on calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) solubility in non-spiked and heavy metal-spiked soil samples. Spiked samples were prepared by cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) as chloride salts and incubating soils for 40 days. The pH buffering capacity

Validation of the multiple sensor mechanism of the Keap1-Nrf2 system.

The Keap1-Nrf2 system plays a critical role in cellular defense against electrophiles and reactive oxygen species. Keap1 possesses a number of cysteine residues, some of which are highly reactive and serves as sensors for these insults. Indeed, point mutation of Cys151 abrogates the response to certain electrophiles. However, this mutation does not affect the other set of electrophiles, suggesting that multiple sensor systems reside within the cysteine residues of Keap1. The precise contribution of each reactive cysteine to the sensor function of Keap1 remains to be clarified. To elucidate the

Environmental risk factors for autism: do they help cause de novo genetic mutations that contribute to the disorder?

Recent research has discovered that a number of genetic risk factors for autism are de novo mutations. Advanced parental age at the time of conception is associated with increased risk for both autism and de novo mutations. We investigated the hypothesis that other environmental factors associated with increased risk for autism might also be mutagenic and contribute to autism by causing de novo mutations. A survey of the research literature identified 9 environmental factors for which increased pre-conceptual exposure appears to be associated with increased risk for autism. Five of these facto

Heme oxygenase-1-mediated partial cytoprotective effect by NO on cadmium-induced cytotoxicity in C6 rat glioma cells.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a 32-kDa stress induced enzyme that degrades heme to carbon monoxide (CO) and biliverdin. By employing RT-PCR and Western blotting techniques, we have examined the HO-1 induction in C6 glioma cells that were treated with cadmium chloride (CdCl(2)) or spermine NONOate (SPER/NO). By employing a cell viability assay, we have also examined the cytoprotective effect of HO-1 induction against the cytotoxicity caused by toxic dose of CdCl(2). In C6 glioma cells exposed to CdCl(2), expression of HO-1 (mRNA and protein) was increased in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Nitr

Induction of OX40, a receptor of gp34, on T cells by trans-acting transcriptional activator, Tax, of human T-cell leukemia virus type I.

gp34, which we had identified as a target molecule of the trans-activation by Tax of human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I), has been found to bind OX40, a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family, resulting in growth stimulation of activated T cells. We here demonstrate that not only gp34 (OX40L), but also OX40 can be transcriptionally activated by Tax. Three Tax-producing human T-cell lines carrying the HTLV-I genome expressed OX40 on their surfaces. Furthermore, Tax-induced transcriptional activation of OX40 was shown in Tax-inducible JPX-9 cells. These results demonstrate t

Removal, redistribution, and potential risks of soil Cd, Pb, and Zn after washing with various extractants.

The effectiveness of four different washing extractants--HCl, FeCl3, citric acid, and EDTA--in removing Cd, Pb, and Zn from polluted soil was studied. The removal of these metals, their redistribution between fractions, and the potential risks posed by them, in soils washed with the tested extractants, were examined. Although all the rounds of washing removed Cd, Pb, and Zn from soil, the first round removed more metals than subsequent rounds. Each of the four extractants had different effects on the removal of the metals. At the end of the first round of washing, HCl, EDTA, and FeCl3 were the

Effect of Acanthopanax senticosus on the accumulation of cadmium and on the immune response of spleen cells.

Exposure to cadmium (Cd) is known to alter immune responses. Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Harms (AS) extract, an antioxidant-containing complex of phenolic compounds, tetracyclic triterpenoids/steroids, and polysaccharides, is known to produce Cd mobilization and excretion in vivo. Building upon earlier findings, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of an AS extract on Cd accumulation and changes in the presence of splenic immune cells in hosts during a chronic metal exposure. Chronic Cd exposure of BALB/c mice was induced by providing them solutions containing differe
