Sex steroids, growth factors and mammographic density: a cross-sectional study of UK postmenopausal Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean women.

INTRODUCTION: Sex steroids, insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and prolactin are breast cancer risk factors but whether their effects are mediated through mammographic density, one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer, is unknown. If such a hormonal basis of mammographic density exists, hormones may underlie ethnic differences in both mammographic density and breast cancer incidence rates. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of 270 postmenopausal Caucasian and Afro-Caribbean women attending a population-based breast screening service in London, UK, we investigated whether plasma bi

[West Nile virus: a new challenge?].

West Nile Virus (WNV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, was first isolated in 1937. Since the original isolation of the WNV outbreaks have occurred with increase in frequency of cases in humans and horses, apparent increase in severe human disease and high avian death rates. In 1999, 2000 and 2002 outbreaks of the WNV encephalitis were reported in horses, birds and humans from New York and Canada. Ornithophilic mosquitoes are the principal vectors of the WNV and birds of several species chiefly migrants appear to be the major introductory or amplifying host. The pattern of outbreaks in the

Familial Alzheimer disease among Caribbean Hispanics: a reexamination of its association with APOE.

OBJECTIVES: To reexamine the association between the apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele (APOE epsilon4) and familial Alzheimer disease (AD), and to search for novel genes that may be associated with susceptibility in Caribbean Hispanic families with a history of AD. METHODS: Families were identified in Caribbean Hispanic communities in the greater New York City area, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. Each family in the study cohort included at least 2 living relatives with a history of dementia. All family members underwent neuropsychological testing and medical and neurological examinat

[Hypovitaminosis A in Brazil: a public health problem].

Vitamin A deficiency is considered one of the most important of the easily preventable public health problems in a number of countries, including Brazil. The objective of this study was to review the scientific literature in the MEDLINE and LILACS databases that was published between 1970 and 2000 concerning vitamin A deficiency, and to assess the occurrence of hypovitaminosis A in Latin America, especially Brazil. Our research showed that until around 1980 the public health concerns focused mainly on the importance of vitamin A in ensuring good vision. In the second half of the 1980s, epidemi

Contraceptive use during lactational amenorrhea.

OBJECTIVE: The study uses data from nationally representative sample surveys in developing countries to estimate the overlap between lactational amenorrhea and contraceptive use during the first 6 months postpartum. METHOD: Secondary analyses of survey data were used to tabulate the proportion of the population in lactational amenorrhea among contraceptive users for all women, for postpartum women and for the country as a whole. RESULTS: Among postpartum women, the proportion in lactational amenorrhea was particularly high in Africa and the Near East and lower in Latin America and the Caribb

Factorial invariance of the Everyday Discrimination Scale among African, Caribbean, Black, and other racialized women living with and without HIV in British Columbia, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: The Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) assesses the mistreatment racialized people experience daily. It is widely used in Canadian HIV research to measure racial discrimination among African, Caribbean, and/or Black (ACB), and other racialized women. However, no studies have examined whether the EDS provides valid estimates of racial discrimination that are objectively comparable across racial/ethnic groups or by HIV status in Canada. We aimed to address this gap. METHODS: We analyzed EDS data from the British Columbia CARMA-CHIWOS Collaboration study of self-identifying women ≥

SAG3 Toxoplasma gondii cloning reveals unexpected fivefold infection in the blood of feral cats in the Mexican Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Currently, more than 300 genotypes of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) have been described throughout the world, demonstrating its wide genetic diversity. The SAG3 locus is one of the genes included in the genotyping panel of this parasite. It is associated with its virulence since it participates during the invasion process of the host cells. Therefore, cloning, sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis were used to deepen the understanding of the SAG3 locus genetic diversity of T. gondii in blood samples from feral cats. RESULTS: Six different SAG3 sequences were detected, five of whi

Admixture mapping reveals the association between Native American ancestry at 3q13.11 and reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease in Caribbean Hispanics.

BACKGROUND: Genetic studies have primarily been conducted in European ancestry populations, identifying dozens of loci associated with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, much of AD's heritability remains unexplained; as the prevalence of AD varies across populations, the genetic architecture of the disease may also vary by population with the presence of novel variants or loci. METHODS: We conducted genome-wide analyses of AD in a sample of 2565 Caribbean Hispanics to better understand the genetic contribution to AD in this population. Statistical analysis included both admixture m

[Experiences, barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions for controlling Aedes aegypti in Latin America and the Caribbean: a qualitative study].

This study sought to describe experiences, barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions for controlling Aedes aegypti in Latin America and the Caribbean. A qualitative approach with semi-structured in-depth interviews with program implementation experts (19 participants in nine countries) was carried out. We used a software to codify the data and created matrices to compare them. Based on our findings, we developed a graphic representation of the theoretical dimensions that encompass the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of interventions. At the global level,

Global Incidence of Preterm Birth.

Estimating the incidence of preterm birth depends on accurate assessment of gestational age and pregnancy outcomes. In many countries, such data are not routinely collected, making global estimates difficult. A recent systematic approach to this problem has estimated a worldwide incidence of 11.1 per 100 live births in 2010. Significant variation in rates by country and region of the world was noted, but this variation is smaller than observed for a number of other important reproductive outcomes. Rates range from approximately 5% in some northern European countries to over 15% in some countri

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is a rare mature CD4(+) T-cell neoplasm caused by the retrovirus human T-lymphotrophic virus type 1. At present there are approximately 20 million people infected globally with this virus, and most of these individuals belong to the endemic areas in southern Japan, Africa, the Caribbean basin, and Latin America. In the United States, it is usually seen in immigrants from these endemic regions. Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma predominantly affects the adult population and is rare in children. Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma has 4 subtypes: acute, lymphomatous, chron

Incidence and mortality of primary liver cancer in England and Wales: changing patterns and ethnic variations.

AIM: To explore recent trends, modes of diagnosis, ethnic distribution and the mortality to incidence ratio of primary liver cancer by subtypes in England and Wales. METHODS: We obtained incidence (1979-2008) and mortality (1968-2008) data for primary liver cancer for England and Wales and calculated age-standardised incidence and mortality rates. Trends in age-standardised mortality (ASMR) and incidence (ASIR) rates and basis of diagnosis of primary liver cancer and subcategories: hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic bile duct and unspecified liver tumours, were analysed over the study per

A decade of mosquito-borne arboviral infections in the Region of Murcia: Clinical and epidemiological description of dengue and chikungunya (2014-2024).

INTRODUCTION: Arboviral diseases are viral infections primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, with a growing global impact. Dengue and chikungunya virus have shown sustained expansion over recent decades, affecting regions previously considered non-endemic. The Region of Murcia presents factors that favour introduction and potential local transmission, including suitable climatic conditions, established presence of Aedes albopictus, and a high flow of travellers to areas with high incidence. Evaluating their evolution and epidemiological characteristics is essential to guide surveillance and supp

Temporal trends in ambient fine particulate matter in Grenada between 2009 and 2022.

Despite its association with significant morbidity and mortality, ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is not robustly monitored in the Caribbean region. To estimate historical PM2.5 concentration trends in Grenada, an island often impacted by Saharan dust storms, a daily time series analysis was conducted using PM2.5 reanalysis data from the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2) as a proxy, due to the absence of reference ground monitoring stations. A multivariate linear regression model was used to evaluate the interactions between MERRA-2 PM2.5 concent…

Micronutrient Deficiencies in Older Adults in Latin America: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The population in Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) has experienced a major demographic transition with increased numbers of older adults (OA). This change brings opportunities in the public health sector to implement health prevention interventions and delay the onset of geriatric syndromes. Micronutrients play an important role in the maintenance of biological function which contributes to longevity. Micronutrient deficiencies (MD) in OA increase the risk for onset of chronic comorbidities and geriatric syndromes. AIM: To review and summarize the existing data on micronutrient s

Asthma in the Americas: An Update: A Joint Perspective from the Brazilian Thoracic Society, Canadian Thoracic Society, Latin American Thoracic Society, and American Thoracic Society.

Asthma affects a large number of people living in the Americas, a vast and diverse geographic region comprising 35 nations in the Caribbean and North, Central, and South America. The marked variability in the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality from asthma across and within nations in the Americas offers a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of the risk factors and management of asthma phenotypes and endotypes in children and adults. Moreover, a better assessment of the causes and treatment of asthma in less economically developed regions in the Americas would help diagnose and tr
