Studies of climate variation commonly rely on chemical and isotopic changes recorded in sequentially produced growth layers, such as in cora … reduced monsoon intensity during this earlier period in northern Borneo, consistent with other Niah Caves studies and long-term speleothem δ18O records in the broader region. This approach can be extended to test hypotheses about the paleoenvironments that early humans encountered in southeast Asia.

Many endotherms use torpor, saving energy by a controlled reduction of their body temperature and metabolic rate. Some species (e.g. arctic ground squirrels, hummingbirds) enter deep torpor, dropping their body temperature by 23-37°C, while others can only enter shallow torpor (e.g. pigeons, 3-10°C reduction). However, deep torpor in mammals can increase predation risk (unless animals are in burrows or caves), inhibit immune function and result in sleep deprivation, so even for species that can enter deep torpor, facultative shallow torpor might help balance energy savings with these potential…

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are hemoparasites which infect the red blood cells of a large variety of mammals. In bats, the only known species of the genus is Babesia vesperuginis. However, except a few old reports, the host range and geographical distribution of this bat parasite have been poorly studied. This study aimed to investigate the presence of piroplasms in tissues of bats collected in four different countries from eastern and central Europe: Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania.
METHODS: A total of 461 bat carcasses (24 species) were collected between 2001 and 2016 from caves, …

The Iberian Mediterranean Basin is home to one of the largest groups of prehistoric rock art sites in Europe. Despite the cultural relevance of prehistoric Spanish Levantine rock art, pigment composition remains partially unknown, and the nature of the binders used for painting has yet to be disclosed. In this work, we present the first omic analysis applied to one of the flagship Levantine rock art sites: the Valltorta ravine (Castellón, Spain). We used high-throughput sequencing to provide the first description of the bacterial communities colonizing the rock art patina, which proved to be d

Flores Island, Indonesia, was inhabited by the small-bodied hominin species Homo floresiensis, which has an unknown evolutionary relationship to modern humans. This island is also home to an extant human pygmy population. Here we describe genome-scale single-nucleotide polymorphism data and whole-genome sequences from a contemporary human pygmy population living on Flores near the cave where H. floresiensis was found. The genomes of Flores pygmies reveal a complex history of admixture with Denisovans and Neanderthals but no evidence for gene flow with other archaic hominins. Modern individuals

Histoplasmosis is a mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum, which is transmitted via dust and aerosols. Lung involvement is the most common, with a varied clinical presentation. Although it is not the only source of infection, H. capsulatum is frequently found in bat guano, which is the reason why it is highly prevalent among caving practitioners. The solitary histoplasmoma of the lung is an unusual and chronic manifestation of this entity, which mimics, or at least is frequently misconstrued, as a malignancy. Almost invariably, the diagnosis of this type of histoplasmo

INTRODUCTION: Appendix duplication is an extremely rare congenital anomaly that is seen in 0.004-0.009% of appendectomy specimens. Duplicated appendix may be associated with number of congenital anomalies.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this case report, we are presenting a rare case of duplicated vermiform appendix with a co-existing Meckel's diverticulum.
DISCUSSION: Anomalies of appendix are rare and duplication of vermiform appendix is extremely rare. In 1936, Cave classified appendiceal duplication for the first time which was modified by Wallbridge in 1963 into three types. Concomitant malfo

Petrositis is a rare and severe complication of acute otitis media and mastoiditis. Although the extension of the inflammatory process from the petrous apex to the adjacent Meckel cave can lead to trigeminal pain, an irritation of the trigeminal nerve roots resulting in acute or chronic hyperactivity of masticatory muscles has never been reported. We report here the unusual case of an 86-year-old man who presented with a handicapping myofascial pain and dysfunction syndrome of the right temporal muscle as a heralding manifestation of an unusual form of petrositis. The patient progressively dev

Ten years ago a well-preserved skull of an early form of Homo sapiens was unearthed from Pleistocene cave deposits at the Jinniushan site in China. Here we present electron-spin resonance (ESR) and uranium-series dates from five fossil animal teeth collected from the hominid locality. The minimum ESR ages (195-165 kyr) are about 50 kyr younger than the uranium-series dates. Taken together, the results suggest an age of about 200 kyr or older for the Jinniushan skull, making it among the oldest H. sapiens material found in China, and almost as old as some of the latest Chinese H. erectus. This

The obliteration of the sinus frontalis after removal of the chronically inflamed and irreversibly transformed mucous is a common surgical treatment. There is no definite answer to the question of the most suitable material for obliteration. The suitability of the Kieler Knochenspan was, therefore, tested in animal experiments. After trepanation and removal of the mucous of the bulla of 30 guinea pigs, the cave was filled up with Kieler Knochenspan. The animals were killed 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3, and 4 months after implantation. The implanted nonvital spongy substance of the Kieler Knochenspan was f

This study evaluated Hg contamination and geochemical fractionation in soils from a historical cinnabar mining site located in south-eastern Spain. Four representative environmental compartments were investigated: a furnace slag heap, the mine interior, the mine exterior and the Tía Anica la Ciega cave. Composite soil samples were obtained from 260 sampling points and analysed for total mercury (THg) using direct mercury analysis (DMA-80). Mercury fractionation was assessed through a sequential extraction procedure, and contamination and ecological risk indices were calculated as preliminary s

PURPOSE: Transorbital endoscopic approaches to the skull base provide minimally invasive access with decreased surgical morbidity in appropriately selected cases. This study expands on the current understanding of transorbital neurological surgery by expanding the cohort, duration of follow-up, detailed ophthalmologic outcomes, and analysis.
METHODS: A retrospective consecutive case review was performed. Included subjects underwent lateral transorbital endoscope-assisted surgical approaches at a single center between 2016 and 2024. Subjects were stratified into 4 groups based on pathology (an

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgical indications for the superior eyelid transorbital endoscopic approach (SETOA) are rapidly expanding over the last years. Nevertheless, as any new technique, a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the surgical target area, the operative corridor, and the specific surgical landmark from this different perspective is required for a safest and successful surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide, through anatomical dissections, a detailed investigation of the surgical anatomy revealed by SETOA via anterolateral triangle of the middle cranial fossa. We also sou
