Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and other blood cell component counts are not associated with the development of postmolar gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

OBJECTIVE: To relate preevacuation platelet count and leukogram findings, especially neutrophil/lymphocyte ratios (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratios with the occurrence of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) after complete hydatidiform mole (CHM) among Brazilian women. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients with CHM followed at Rio de Janeiro Federal University, from January/2015-December/2020. Before molar evacuation, all patients underwent a medical evaluation, complete blood count and hCG measurement, in addition to other routine preoperative tests. The primary outcome was

A microfluidic device enabling drug resistance analysis of leukemia cells via coupled dielectrophoretic detection and impedimetric counting.

We report the development of a lab-on-a-chip system, that facilitates coupled dielectrophoretic detection (DEP-D) and impedimetric counting (IM-C), for investigating drug resistance in K562 and CCRF-CEM leukemia cells without (immuno) labeling. Two IM-C units were placed upstream and downstream of the DEP-D unit for enumeration, respectively, before and after the cells were treated in DEP-D unit, where the difference in cell count gave the total number of trapped cells based on their DEP characteristics. Conductivity of the running buffer was matched the conductivity of cytoplasm of wild type …

Resting state brain network functional connectivity is not associated with inflammatory markers and blood cell counts in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammation and monocyte counts have previously been associated with changes in resting state functional connectivity ( … ession models. RESULTS: We found no significant correlations between inflammatory markers or blood cell counts and mean connectivity within four resting state networks (RSNs), neither preoperatively nor postoperatively. Significant inter-region rsFC was found within these RSNs between a few regions either pre- or postoperatively, but no inter-region connect …

Sleep duration is related to increased mortality risk through white blood cell counts in a large national sample.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep, like many biological processes, is linked with immunity and inflammation such that "abnormal" sleep is associated with changes in circulating immune cells. These sleep patterns are also associated with increased mortality risk, and it may be that altered immune cell counts are one biological pathway through which sleep affects mortality. We used NHANES survey data to examine the associations between sleep duration, total white blood cell (WBC) count, and mortality from biological causes. METHODS: Several waves of public NHANES data (2005-2011; n = 11 353, ages 18+) were ana…

What Is the Impact of Automated Synovial Cell Counting on Different Aseptic Causes and Periprosthetic Conditions Associated With Revision THA?

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that automated synovial cell counting may overestimate the white blood cell (WBC) count, resulting in false positive tests when evaluating patients for the possibility of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) after THA. However, associations between WBC counts high enough to mimic PJI in patients whose arthroplasties are not infected but rather are experiencing a variety of aseptic problems-including but not limited to metallosis, polyethylene wear, and recurrent dislocation-have not, to our knowledge, been adequately addressed. In addition, there is a lack of…

CD4 cells count as a prognostic marker in HIV patients with comparative analysis of various studies in Asia Pacific region.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between CD4+ cells count with orofacial and systemic manifestations in newly diagnosed HIV seropositive patients and comparison of results with the previous studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hundred (100; 57 males and 43 females) newly diagnosed HIV seropositive patients, before starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) were included in the study. These patients were clustered according to CD4+ cells count into three groups: 0-200 cells/mm3, 201-499 cells/mm3, and more than 500 cells/mm3. Orofacial and systemic manifestations of these patients were recorded and

IL-6 and CD8+ T cell counts combined are an early predictor of in-hospital mortality of patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUNDFatal cases of COVID-19 are increasing globally. We retrospectively investigated the potential of immunologic parameters as early … fold. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, IL-6 levels of more than 20 pg/mL and CD8+ T cell counts of less than 165 cells/μL were found to be associated with in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounding factors. Groups with IL-6 levels of more than 20 pg/mL and CD8+ T cell counts of less than 165 cells/μL had a higher percentage of olde …

Fluorescence-based method is more accurate than counting-based methods for plotting growth curves of adherent cells.

OBJECTIVE: Cell growth curves constitute one of the primary assays employed to analyze cell proliferation dynamics of in vitro cultured cells under specific culture conditions. From the cell growth curve, it is possible to assess the behavior of proliferating cells under different conditions, such as drug treatment and genomic editions. Traditionally, growth curves for adherent cells are obtained by seeding the cells in multiple-well plates and counting the total number of cells at different time points. Here, we compare this traditional method to the fluorescence-based method, which is based

Urine sediment examination: Potential impact of red and white blood cell counts using different sediment methods.

BACKGROUND: Centrifugation is the primary method used to perform urine sediment analyses, but evaluation of other methods is required to validate centrifugation. OBJECTIVES: Non-urine materials were used to examine the repeatability (precision) and effectiveness (recovery) of four sediment methodologies on red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts. METHODS: Four urine sediment methods were compared using commercially available quality control material (QCM) and fresh canine RBCs in a diluent. Treatments included (a) 5 mL centrifugation at 390g for 5 minutes; (b) 1.5 mL centrifug

The Dietary Inflammatory Index is associated with elevated white blood cell counts in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

White blood cells (WBCs) are considered a reliable biomarker of inflammation. Elevations in both WBCs and pro-inflammatory cytokines are associated with several chronic conditions. Diet is a strong moderator of inflammation and WBCs. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and WBCs using data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). NHANES is a cross-sectional study that occurs in two-year cycles. Respondents from five cycles (n = 26,046) with available data on diet (collected through a sing

Identification and red blood cell automated counting from blood smear images using computer-aided system.

Red blood cell count plays a vital role in identifying the overall health of the patient. Hospitals use the hemocytometer to count the blood cells. Conventional method of placing the smear under microscope and counting the cells manually lead to erroneous results, and medical laboratory technicians are put under stress. A computer-aided system will help to attain precise results in less amount of time. This research work proposes an image-processing technique for counting the number of red blood cells. It aims to examine and process the blood smear image, in order to support the counting of re…

Decreased CD3-CD16+CD56+ natural killer cell counts in children with orbital myositis: a clue to disease activity.

The study aimed to document the utility of the absolute number of natural killer cells as a biomarker in paediatric orbital myositis (OM). E … iatric OM disease activity was associated with initially low absolute CD3-CD16+CD56+ natural killer cell counts, which normalised with improvement. We speculate (1) infection, such as Coxsackie B virus, may be associated with paediatric OM; and (2) the absolute count of circulating CD3-CD16+CD56+ natural killer lymphocytes may serve as a biomarker to guide m …

Increased Hepatitis E Virus Seroprevalence Correlates with Lower CD4+ Cell Counts in HIV-Infected Persons in Argentina.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that can cause hepatitis in an epidemic fashion. HEV usually causes asymptomatic or limited acute infections in immunocompetent individuals, whereas in immunosuppressed individuals such as transplant recipients, HEV can cause chronic infections. The risks and outcomes of HEV co-infection in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are poorly characterized. We used a third generation immunoassay to measure serum IgG antibodies specific for HEV in 204 HIV-infected individuals from Argentina and a control group of 433 HIV-neg

Elevated IP10 levels are associated with immune activation and low CD4⁺ T-cell counts in HIV controller patients.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV controllers (HICs) achieve long-term control of viremia in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART), they displa … y donors. In HICs, we investigated the interplay between biomarkers, cell activation and the CD4⁺ T-cell count. RESULTS: HICs had higher levels of IP10, TNFα and sCD14 than healthy donors did (P < 0.01 for each). Also, TNFα and sCD14 levels of the HICs were similar to those measured in viremic and ART-treated patients. However, the levels of IL6 and IL10 we …

Nucleated red blood cells count as first prognostic marker for adverse neonatal outcome in severe preeclamptic pregnancies.

The purpose of this study was to determine acceptability of the nucleated red blood cells counts (NRBC) as early prognostic parameter for adverse outcome in preterm neonates born from pregnancies complicated with severe preeclampsia. We analysed 77 premature newborns who were born from pregnancies with severe preeclampsia during eight years (2004-2011) in our tertiary center. Women with other pregnancy complications were excluded from the study, as well as newborns with malformations and chromosomal anomalies. Newborns were compared according to the count of nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) on
