PURPOSE: Sexual minority youth (SMY) are at higher risk for victimization and suicide than are heterosexual youth (HY). Relatively little research has examined which types of victimization are most closely linked to suicide, which is necessary to develop targeted prevention interventions. BACKGROUND: Examination of pathology slides is a routine part of a breast cancer second opinion. The purpose of this study was to determine how often the pathologic second opinion (1) altered the diagnosis and (2) resulted in a change in the surgical procedure.
METHODS: Patients presenting between 1997 and 2001 for a second opinion after a biopsy diagnosis of breast cancer (invasive or noninvasive) were included in this study.
RESULTS: There were 340 patients presenting for second opinions regarding 346 breast cancers. Sixty-eight pathologic second opinions (20%) did not result in any change

The records of 238 patients with the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction at the University of Illinois Hospital from 1967 through the spring of 1976 were reviewed. Mortality, intra-operative management, and clinical findings were evaluated. Previous reports list a mortality of gangrenous small bowel obstruction, secondary to hernia and/or adhesions, as greater than 20%, although in this series, the mortality was 4.5% in patients with gangrenous small bowel obstruction. Three cases of fetus papyraceus in twin pregnancy were seen over a 4-month period. They were associated with an antepartum stillbirth and intrauterine growth retardation of the larger twin. Two of the 3 mothers exhibited hypertension. It is concluded, therefore, that the appearance of a fetus papyraceus frequently indicates the presence of a hostile intrauterine environment. We suggest that serial ultrasonic examinations be performed to confirm the diagnosis of fetus papyraceus. In this way, appropriate therapy may be directed toward a better outcome for the second twin.

There are many reasons why once a day oral dosage may be advantageous in administration of psychotropic drugs to mental patients, such as convenience for the patient, avoided side effects, ease of remembering, all of which contribute to reliable dosage as well as cost savings. A growing body of evidence suggests that experiences with discrimination have implications for mental health and that these associations may vary by social status. We use data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study (CCAHS) to examine how two types of perceived discrimination, chronic everyday discrimination and major lifetime discrimination, are linked to mental health, and how this association varies by race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status. In the United States, most adults state that religion plays an important role in their lives and claim a religious affiliation. For gay, bisexual, and transgender persons (GBT), the story is unique because their sexual and gender identity is not accepted by most religions. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of religiosity in the life course of Latino GBTs raised as Catholics. BACKGROUND: Certain situations dictate conservative management of grade 4 uterine or vaginal vault prolapse in women. The reduction of a prolapse may not be possible if the vagina cannot retain a single pessary. We have used double pessaries in the management of this condition.
TECHNIQUE: With the patient in the dorsal lithotomy position, either a Donut or Inflatoball (Milex Products Inc., Chicago, IL) pessary is inserted and pushed into the vagina as far as is comfortable. A 15-year retrospective analysis was carried out at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, reviewing the tumor staging and pathology data of 239 patients treated for carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx requiring laryngectomy alone, laryngectomy with neck dissection, or laryngopharyngectomy and neck dissection. In an attempt to determine which hypoxic newborns might benefit from administration of tolazoline hydrochloride (Tz), we identified all neonates known to have received Tz at four Chicago area perinatal centers over a 4-yr period. For each of 41 infants, five statistical analyses were used to correlate 31 clinical and ventilatory variables with PaO2 values before and after Tz administration. We report on a syndrome of disfiguring lower extremity cutaneous lesions of 6 years duration. Previous medical evaluations included 5 skin biopsies and several therapeutic regimens which did not alter the course of illness. The histologic interpretations of skin biopsies included panniculitis, papulonecrosis, and granuloma. One biopsy was interpreted as a localized cutaneous vasculitis with a wedge-shaped infarct.
