Gene expression in the chicken caecum is dependent on microbiota composition.

Gut microbiota is of considerable importance for each host. Despite this, germ-free animals can be obtained and raised to sexual maturity and consequences of the presence or absence of gut microbiota on gene expression of the host remain uncharacterised. In this study, we performed an unbiased study of protein expression in the caecum of germ-free and colonised chickens. The major difference between these two groups was in the expression of immunoglobulins which were essentially absent in the germ-free chickens. Microbiota also caused a minor decrease in the expression of focal adhesion and ex…

Aortic stenosis and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis: the chicken or the egg?

BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis (AS) and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (TTR-CA) are both frequent in elderly. The combination of these two diseases has never been investigated. AIMS: To describe patients with concomitant AS and TTR-CA. METHODS: Six cardiologic French centres identified retrospectively cases of patients with severe or moderate AS associated with TTR-CA hospitalized during the last 6 years. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were included. Mean ± SD age was 79 ± 6 years, 81% were men. Sixty per cent were NYHA III-IV, 31% had carpal tunnel syndrome, and 56% had atrial fibrillation. Med

Microbiological Evaluation of Pork and Chicken By-Products in South Korea.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the microbiological risk of pork and chicken by-products by enumerating indicator bacteria (total aerobic bacteria, coliforms, and Escherichia coli) and identifying pathogens such as Campylobacter and Salmonella. The antibiotic resistance of pathogenic isolates was determined, and molecular subtyping was performed using automated repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR). Pork and chicken by-products were collected from 10 processing plants. The mean numbers of total aerobic bacteria, coliforms, and E. coli from 95 pork by-product samples and 64 chicken by-pro

Periorbital varicella gangrenosa: A rare complication of chicken pox.

A previously healthy six year old male child presented in pediatrics ICU in state of shock with history of fever and rashes and later was diagnosed as chicken pox. He developed right sided periorbital varicella gangrenosa which is a form of necrotizing fasciitis secondary to skin infection. Patient was treated with intravenous acyclovir, antibiotics, amphotericin B, extensive debridement and later reconstruction of upper eyelid with skin grafting. Aggressive treatment helped preventing the eyeball and orbital involvement which would have necessitated orbital exenteration. However delayed prese

Characterization of the expression profile of CRBP1 and CRBP3 gene in chicken.

In this study, we quantified the expression of CRBP1 and CRBP3 in Roman layer (R) and Erlang mountainous chickens (SD02 and SD03), to discern the tissue, breed and age-related expression patterns in order to discover potential involvement in egg production and other related reproduction traits. Real-time quantitative PCR assays were developed for accurate measurement of CRBP1 and CRBP3 mRNA levels in different tissues from chickens at four ages (12, 20, 32 and 45 weeks). We found that the CRBP1 and CRBP3 were expressed in all six tissues examined in all three breeds of chicken at 32 weeks. CRB…

Molecular characterization of chicken class II transactivator gene.

Class II transactivator (CIITA) is an effective transcriptional factor regulating various genes in the immune system. Since the detection of CIITA in 1993, there has been considerable progress toward understanding its role as an activator of MHC II genes in human and mouse; however, there is little knowledge of this gene in other animals such as chicken. Molecular characterization of the chicken CIITA gene transcript was performed to determine its sequence and expression in different tissues. The CIITA cDNA was first generated through reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) fr

Sleep disorders and inflammatory disease activity: chicken or the egg?

Sleep dysfunction is a highly prevalent condition that has long been implicated in accelerating disease states characterized by having an inflammatory component such as systemic lupus erythematosus, HIV, and multiple sclerosis. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, debilitating disease that is characterized by waxing and waning symptoms, which are a direct result of increased circulating inflammatory cytokines. Recent studies have demonstrated sleep dysfunction and the disruption of the circadian rhythm to result in an upregulation of inflammatory cytokines. Not only does this pose a

Antimicrobial usage in chicken production in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam.

Antimicrobials are used extensively in chicken production in Vietnam, but to date no quantitative data are available. A 2012-2013 survey of 208 chicken farms in Tien Giang province, stratified by size (10-200 chickens; >200-2000), was carried out to describe and quantify the use of antibacterial antimicrobials (usage per week per chicken and usage per 1000 chickens produced) in the Mekong Delta and to investigate factors associated with usage. Twenty-eight types of antimicrobial belonging to 10 classes were reported. Sixty-three per cent of all commercial formulations contained at least two an…

Dermanyssus gallinae (chicken mite): an underdiagnosed environmental infestation.

Dermanyssus gallinae is a mite that normally parasitizes small birds but may occasionally bite humans. We report an unusual case of an 82-year-old woman who presented with pruritus and bite-like lesions over her trunk. Other members of the household were also affected. On physical examination, mites < 1 mm in size were found on the patient's body. The family were residing in the city centre and had no pets, but there were pigeon nests in close proximity to the house. Most dermatologists have difficulties identifying ectoparasitosis. In the case of D. gallinae, the small size of the mites and t

Graft polymerization of native chicken feathers for thermoplastic applications.

Inexpensive and biodegradable thermoplastics were developed through graft polymerization of native chicken feather with methyl acrylate as a potential substitute for petroleum products. Poultry feathers are available in large quantities at a low price. However, natural chicken feathers have poor thermoplasticity, cannot be used to develop thermoplastic products, have very limited industrial applications, and are often considered as solid wastes. In this research, the effects of graft polymerization conditions, such as molar ratio of NaHSO(3) to K(2)S(2)O(8), initiator and monomer concentration

Biological characterization of Nigerian chicken anaemia virus isolates.

Chicken anaemia virus (CAV) DNA was extracted from thymus, liver and bone marrow samples obtained from broiler and pullet chicken flocks in southwestern Nigeria, which presented with clinical signs and lesions suggestive of both infectious bursal disease and chicken infectious anaemia. While CAV was successfully isolated in MDCC-MSB1 cells from four of the pooled tissue samples, the remaining two samples failed to grow in cells. Monoclonal antibody (MAb) characterization using four MAbs produced against the reference Cuxhaven-1 (Cux-1) CAV isolate showed that Nigerian CAV isolates are antigeni

Subglottic chicken bone in a five month old baby.

Foreign body aspiration most commonly affects young children, with respiratory symptoms such as wheeze and cough after a choking episode. When the foreign body is first inhaled as per witnessed by the parents or caregiver there is always choking or gaging episode, followed by a coughing spell. The absence of a cough strongly rules out the possibility of foreign body having entered the air passage. Here we report a case of chicken bone inhaled as foreign body in a five months old baby.
