Collaboration fails to promote sharing behavior but both collaborative and parallel play boost friendship in young children aged 4 to 6.

Prosocial behaviors like collaboration and sharing are key to early childhood development. This study examined how collaboration, sex, and friendship influence sharing and perceived friendship among 48 dyads (96 children) aged 4-6. Participants were recruited from primary schools and paired into same-sex or cross-sex dyads. They were randomly assigned to either a collaborative or parallel play condition involving a cheese board game. In the collaborative condition, children worked together on one board, whereas in the parallel condition, they played individually on separate boards. After the g

Exploring Gambling-like Behaviors in Children's Cigarette Card Games and Parental Pro-game Perceptions in China: A Qualitative Study.

Cigarette card games emerged as a popular yet controversial pastime among children in China, raising concerns on the potential to foster gambling-like behaviors. This study explored children's experiences and perceptions of cigarette card games, as well as parental attitudes and facilitation practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 child-parent dyads (19 boys, 2 girls) from September to December 2024. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were adopted to recruit children who had played cigarette card games in the past 1 month. Separate interview protocols were develope

Food patterns and body weight in young adulthood and associations with food consumption throughout childhood: findings from a birth-cohort study.

This study aimed to investigate (1) the longitudinal associations between food patterns and body weight in young adulthood and (2) how food patterns of young adults relate to food consumption in early, middle and late childhood. The study sample includes 700 participants of the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. During childhood, frequency of consumption of various foods was reported on ten occasions between 1·5 and 13 years. At age 22 years, food frequency questions (with quantities) were used to derive four food patterns (labelled healthy, beverage rich, protein rich and high en

Schools as Neighborhoods: A Holistic Framework for Student Well-Being, Opportunity, and Social Success.

BACKGROUND: Schools play a central role in child development and socialization and can function as protective environments that mitigate the effects of adversity. Building on the Social Ecological Model and Community School Transformation, we propose a "Schools-as-Neighborhoods" framework that conceptualizes schools as intentionally designed microenvironments capable of generating social capital, promoting positive childhood experiences, and buffering harmful neighborhood exposures through trauma-informed programming. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed-methods study across four public a

Parenting, psychological insecurity, and mental health: Understanding the effects of adverse childhood experiences in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which individuals undergo significant cognitive, social, and emotional changes. Although extensive research shows that parenting styles can either promote or hinder adolescent mental health, relatively few studies have examined how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and psychological insecurity jointly mediate these effects in non-Western contexts. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles influence adolescent psychological well-being (PWB), with a specific fo

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on stress, coping, and well-being among adults with histories of child maltreatment.

A number of studies now confirm that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased and exacerbated mental health problems in the general population. Previous quantitative studies have found similar effects on mental health symptoms among adults with histories of childhood adversity; however, qualitative research is needed to provide a more in-depth understanding of pandemic-related experiences among this vulnerable population. Using semistructured qualitative interviews, we explored perceptions of adults with histories of child maltreatment and neglect to better understand the overall impact of the pand

How Do Providers Assess Young People for Risk of Sex Trafficking? Observed Indicators, Follow-Up, and Assessment Questions from a Sample of Social Service Providers.

The extent to which service providers across systems identify and assess potentially sex trafficked youth is understudied. The purpose of this study is to determine whether and how providers observe relevant indicators and assess for sex trafficking risk among minors (ages 12-17), young adults (ages 18-29), and families of minors. A cross-sectional, web-based survey was disseminated to service providers, who represented child welfare, youth justice, and social services (e.g. runaway youth, sexual violence), in a region of a Midwestern state (United States). Participants (N=267) were asked whet

The impact of the UK Baby Friendly Initiative on maternal and infant health outcomes: A mixed-methods systematic review.

Global evidence demonstrates that adherence to the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) has a positive impact on multiple child health outcomes, including breastfeeding initiation and duration up to 1 year post-partum. However, it is currently unclear whether these findings extend to specific countries with resource-rich environments. This mixed-methods systematic review aims to (a) examine the impact of BFI implementation (hospital and community) on maternal and infant health outcomes in the United Kingdom (UK) and (b) explore the experiences and views of women receiving BFI-compliant care in the U

Making mothers in jail: carceral reproduction of normative motherhood.

The over-reliance on incarceration in the USA is a racialized phenomenon which has affected millions of families - disproportionately people of colour - reconfiguring kinship around the criminal legal system. Mass incarceration, then, disrupts conventional modes of reproduction and threatens reproductive justice, separates families and funnels children into foster care, diverts funds from social services into prisons, restricts women's access to abortion and adequate pregnancy care, shackles women in childbirth, and incarcerates people during their prime reproductive years. Beyond these obviou

Creating allies: qualitative exploration of young women's preferences for PrEP methods and parents' role in PrEP uptake and user support in urban and rural Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Zambian adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have high HIV incidence and face barriers to the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Parental support improves PrEP use and adherence in some settings, but negative parental attitudes toward HIV prevention may inhibit engagement with AGYW. We explored perceptions of future PrEP methods among AGYW and parents and parent-youth engagement on HIV prevention and PrEP use. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study among AGYW and parents of AGYW in five provinces in Zambia in September-October 2021. We conducted 10 focus gro

Experience of continuity of care mitigates poorer infant temperament for women reporting elevated hardship during pregnancy: Birth In The Time of COVID (BITTOC) study.

PROBLEM: It is unknown whether unborn infants exposed to their mothers' uncontrollable stressful life events could benefit from the continuity of their mothers' prenatal carer. BACKGROUND: Maternal stress in pregnancy predicts poorer child outcomes. Continuity of care improves maternal mental health. AIM: Determine whether continuity of care moderates association between prenatal maternal stress due to COVID-19 and infant negative emotionality at age 6 months. METHODS: Australian women, pregnant during the pandemic, completed a survey detailing their level of continuity of maternity care, p

"When You Look at This Chart, That Is Not My Whole Life": Caregiver Perspectives to Inform Improved Primary Care Practice and Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Worsening rates of infant and maternal mortality in the United States serve as an urgent call for multi-modal intervention. Infant Well Child Visits (WCVs) provide an opportunity for prevention, however not all infants receive the recommended schedule of visits, with infants of low-income and Black families missing a higher portion of WCVs. Due to diverse experiences and needs of under-resourced communities throughout the United States, caregiver voice is essential when designing improvement efforts. METHODS: Purposeful sampling and interviewing of 10 caregivers in Cincinnati, OH w

Making a Difference from Day One: The Urgent Need for Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening.

Neonatal hearing screening (NHS) is a critical public health measure for early identification of hearing loss, ensuring timely access to interventions that can dramatically improve a child's language development, cognitive abilities, and social inclusion. Beyond clinical benefits, NHS provides long-term advantages in education and quality of life. Given that congenital hearing loss affects approximately 1-2 in every 1000 newborns worldwide, the case for universal screening is clear. Countries like the United States and Australia have successfully implemented NHS, leading to earlier diagnoses,
