Diagnosis of mucopurulent cervicitis among women at risk for Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the utility of a gram stain of endocervical secretions in the prediction of endocervical infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. Endocervical examinations, Gram stains and chlamydial cultures were performed on 214 women who were attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic and were at increased risk for chlamydial infection. Almost 24% of the Gram stains were judged inadequate because of the presence of ectocervical material. However, significantly higher isolation rates for C. trachomatis were found for those women with valid smears and 10 or mor

The incidence of Chlamydia trachomatis-induced infection in women suffering from cervicovaginitis.

The results of a research on Chlamydia T. (direct survey of both the antigen in the uterine cervix and plasmatic antibodies) in a group of subjects suffering for cervico-vaginitis are provided. The incidence of the Chlamydia infection (proved by either the presence of this bacterium or antibody positivity) is not different from the values reported in literature. Conversely, the presence of neither specific cytological or colposcopic patterns nor of priviledged comites at vaginal level could be demonstrated. Our data, however, confirm a greater incidence of this infection in women reporting ear

Recovery of Chlamydia trachomatis from the endometrium of women at risk for chlamydial infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted disease in Western Society today and is a major cause of salpingitis and tubal infertility. However, the frequency with which it produces upper genital tract infection in asymptomatic women has not been determined. Endometrial, endocervical, and urethral cultures for C. trachomatis were obtained from 60 women who were at risk for chlamydial infection but who did not have evidence of endometritis or salpingitis on physical examination. Chlamydia was isolated from the lower genitourinary tract in 26 (43%) and from the endometrium in 1

Illnesses in infants born to women with Chlamydia trachomatis infection. A prospective study.

Chlamydia trachomatis is known to cause infant pneumonitis and conjunctivitis and is a suspected cause of otitis media and gastroenteritis. To identify infections associated with exposure to C trachomatis, infant illnesses were studied through a "blinded" review of medical records of 244 infants born to women cultured antenatally for cervical C trachomatis, 25% of whom had C trachomatis-positive cultures. Compared with unexposed infants, infants exposed to C trachomatis had twice the rate of both pneumonitis and recurrent otitis media in the first six months. Infants who were exposed to C trac

Chlamydia trachomatis in the pharynx and rectum of heterosexual patients at risk for genital infection.

Although urogenital infections with Chlamydia trachomatis are well recognized, less is known about infection at other body sites in adults. Pharyngeal specimens obtained from 706 heterosexual men and 686 women, and rectal specimens obtained from 1223 women who were at risk for chlamydia infection were cultured for C. trachomatis. Urogenital specimens were obtained from all patients. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the pharynx in 3.7% of men and 3.2% of women. Recovery of chlamydiae was not associated with the presence of pharyngeal symptoms, but in women, but not men, it was associated

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in sexually active adolescents: prevalence and risk factors.

The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection was studied in a sexually active urban Baltimore adolescent population. Possible risk factors such as age, past history of sexually transmitted disease, number of sexual partners, contact with sexually transmitted disease, oral contraceptive use, and concomitant gonococcal infection were also evaluated. The prevalence of chlamydial infection in the 280 adolescents studied was 26%: 35% in male adolescents, 27% in pregnant female adolescents, and 23% in nonpregnant female adolescents. Chlamydia was almost three times as prevalent as gonor

Effect of treatment regimens for Neisseria gonorrhoeae on simultaneous infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.

We evaluated the effect of treatment of gonorrhea on simultaneous Chlamydia trachomatis infection by randomly assigning 293 heterosexual men and 246 heterosexual women with gonorrhea to receive one of the following treatment regimens: (1) 4.8 million units of aqueous procaine penicillin plus 1 g of probenecid, (2) nine tablets of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole daily for three days, or (3) 500 mg of tetracycline four times a day for five days. Among the men, gonococcal infection was cured in 99 per cent given penicillin plus probenecid, 96 per cent given trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and 98 per

Comparison of rosaramicin and erythromycin stearate for treatment of cervical infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.

The macrolide antibiotic rosaramicin inhibits in vitro growth of Chlamydia trachomatis. Rosaramicin (1 g daily given to 18 patients for seven days) and erythromycin stearate (2 g daily given to 19 patients for seven days) were compared in the treatment of chlamydial cervicitis. Cultures of cervical specimens obtained nine to 11 days and 24-32 days after commencement of therapy were negative for all rosaramicin-treated patients seen at follow-up. The first follow-up culture of one erythromycin recipient was positive. The extent of cervicitis decreased in all patients after treatment, but the on

Efficacy of treatment regimens for lower urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women.

One hundred thirteen women had Chlamydia trachomatis isolated from the cervix, or urethra, or both, were treated, and followed until failure occurred or for at least 40 days after initiation of treatment. On regimens given four times daily for 7 days, failure occurred in three (8%) of 38 on tetracycline, 500 mg, in none of five on erythromycin, 500 mg, and in three (8%) of 37 on erythromycin, 250 mg. On regimens of 500 mg given four times daily for 10 days, failure occurred in none of nine on tetracycline and in one (4%) of 24 on sulfisoxazole. Erythromycin, 500 mg, was stopped because of seve

Severe pelvic infection from Chlamydia trachomatis after cesarean section.

A severe pelvic infection developed in a 17-year-old primigravida after a cesarean section. Multiple antibiotics were administered for presumed mixed aerobic and anaerobic infections, without improvement. Subsequently, total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed. Despite negative standard cultures, her condition continued to deteriorate and she required two more exploratory laparotomies for suspected intra-abdominal abscesses. Chlamydia trachomatis and, subsequently, Candida albicans were recovered from cultures of peritoneal fluid obtained after the third operation.

Significance of cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection in postabortal pelvic inflammatory disease.

The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection of the cervix uteri and its possible association with postabortal pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) were investigated in women subjected to first-trimester-induced abortion. None of the women had signs or symptoms of genital infection at the time of abortion. Chlamydia organisms were isolated from the cervix/urethra in 33 (10%) of 333 women. Women with a positive Chlamydia culture were comparable to women with a negative culture in regard to gestational age at the time of abortion. However, Chlamydia-positive women were significantly younger an

Chlamydia psittaci infection in lines of mice with high or low antibody responses.

Biozzi's high (H) and low (L) antibody producer mice were i.v. infected with a suspension containing 10(4)/ml viable C. psittaci organisms. H mice humoral anti-Chlamydia response was much higher than that of L mice. L mice natural resistance to infection with live Chlamydia was higher than that of H mice. Since the two lines exhibit inverse differences in B-cell and macrophage functions, but they are quite similar with regard to T-cell-mediated immunity, it would appear that macrophages play a more important and earlier role than humoral antibodies in resistance to chlamydial infection in H an

Baicalin inhibits Chlamydia trachomatis growth by impairing elementary body infectivity.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infection is a prevalent sexually transmitted disease worldwide. Although antibiotics are the standard first-line treatment, the rising incidence of treatment failure highlights the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Baicalin, a natural flavonoid compound extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis, is known to possess antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-chlamydial effects of baicalin. Our results showed that baicalin significantly inhibited the growth of multiple C. trachomatis serovars (A, D, and L2) in HeLa cells, as in

Chlamydia muridarum Infection Impacts Murine Models of Intestinal Inflammation and Cancer.

Chlamydia muridarum (Cm) has reemerged as a prevalent infectious agent in research mouse colonies. Despite its prevalence and ability to persistently colonize the murine gastrointestinal tract, few studies have evaluated the potential impact of Cm on experimental models of gastrointestinal disease. Studies were conducted to evaluate the impact of Cm on the Citrobacter rodentium (Cr), Trichuris muris (Tm) and Il 10 -/- mouse models of intestinal inflammation, as well as on tumorigenesis in the Apc Min/+ mouse following administration of DSS. Acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in a child, complicated by retrobulbar optic neuritis.

INTRODUCTION: This case highlights a rare and significant complication of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection: optic neuritis (ON). Acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in children typically presents with respiratory tract symptoms and may occasionally lead to complications or sequelae. ON is a condition most commonly associated with viral infections or other demyelinating diseases. CASE REPORT: The patient, a 10-year-old girl, initially presented with the typical systemic symptoms of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection, including fever, chills, and headache, in addition to an atypical symptom-chromati

Cytotoxic CD4+ T Cells Are Induced during Infection with Chlamydia trachomatis.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infection in both men and women. Immunity to C. trachomatis involves many cell types, but CD4+ T cells play a key role in protecting the host during natural infection. Specifically, IFN-γ production by CD4+ T cells is the main effector responsible for bacterial clearance, yet the exact mechanism by which IFN-γ confers protection is poorly defined. In our efforts to define the specific mechanisms for bacterial clearance, we now show that IFN-γ upregulates expression of MHC class II (MHCII) on nonhematopoietic cells

ATG9A supports Chlamydia trachomatis infection via autophagy-independent mechanisms.

ATG9A is an autophagy-related gene that functions during the isolation membrane expansion process to form autophagosomes, but it also has other functions independent of autophagy. In this study, we employed ATG9A-deficient HeLa cells and found that the absence of ATG9A negatively impacted proliferation of Chlamydia trachomatis in inclusions. Furthermore, rescue experiments using ATG9A mutants revealed that this action was mediated not by its autophagic function but by its binding ability to clathrin adapter proteins. These findings suggest that the proper trafficking of ATG9A assists C. tracho
