Choroidal melanocytic lesions in children: focal aggregates and melanocytosis.

PURPOSE: To investigate prevalence and age of onset of choroidal melanocytic lesions (other than nevi) in pediatric patients. METHODS: The pooled data of participants 6 months to 18 years of age in the Sydney Paediatric Eye Disease Study, the Sydney Myopia Study, and the Sydney Adolescent Vascular Eye Disease Study were reviewed retrospectively to identify children with choroidal melanocytic lesions. The clinical features and prevalence by age were assessed. RESULTS: From the pooled sample of 5,533 unique children, 39 cases of focal melanocytic aggregates and 22 cases of choroidal melanocyto

Efficient Coding by Midget and Parasol Ganglion Cells in the Human Retina.

In humans, midget and parasol ganglion cells account for most of the input from the eyes to the brain. Yet, how they encode visual information is unknown. Here, we perform large-scale multi-electrode array recordings from retinas of treatment-naive patients who underwent enucleation surgery for choroidal malignant melanomas. We identify robust differences in the function of midget and parasol ganglion cells, consistent asymmetries between their ON and OFF types (that signal light increments and decrements, respectively) and divergence in the function of human versus non-human primate retinas.

Choroidal melanocytic tumors in dogs: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical features of dogs diagnosed with choroidal melanocytic tumors at a veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS STUDIED: Retrospective case series of 13 dogs (14 melanocytic tumors) with choroidal melanocytic tumors. PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs evaluated by the Cornell University ophthalmology service with a clinical diagnosis of a choroidal melanocytic tumor between 2008 and 2020 were reviewed. A choroidal melanocytic tumor was clinically defined as any well-demarcated, raised pigmented choroidal lesion underlying the retina. Histopathology results were consu

[Diagnostics and treatment of choroidal lymphoma].

Choroidal lymphoma is a rare disease and can be classified into primary and secondary choroidal lymphomas. Primary choroidal lymphoma is a low-grade extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma and secondary choroidal lymphomas present ocular manifestations of disseminated systemic lymphomas. Typical clinical features of choroidal lymphoma are multifocal, yellow-whitish choroidal infiltrates. The vitreous body is usually clear and cell-free. Choroidal lymphoma has a tendency to extend through the sclera. In contrast to primary choroidal lymphoma, which is more often unilateral, does not show signs

Late onset of subfoveal choroidal neovascularisation following cerebral radiotherapy.

A report of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) associated with radiation retinopathy. A 43-year-old Caucasian man presented with a 4-week history of sudden loss of central vision in the left eye, 8.5 years following radical radiotherapy for left tempero-parietal anaplastic astrocytoma. His visual acuity was 6/6 in the right eye and 6/60 in the left eye. Ophthalmoscopy of the left eye showed central macular pigmented area surrounded by subretinal fluid, haemorrhage and exudates. Fundus fluorescein angiography revealed left subfoveal CNV with surrounding macular oedema and peripheral retinal isc

[Long-term progression in a case of transvitreal endoresection of a posterior choroidal malignant melanoma].

BACKGROUND: In Japan, there are few reports of the prognosis of the endoresection of malignant choroidal melanoma. We previously reported this case of transvitreal endoresection of a posterior choroidal malignant melanoma. The tumor recurred and enucleation was carried out. Here we report the subsequent long-term clinical course. CASE: A choroidal tumor temporal to the macula was noted in the right eye of a 47-year-old male patient. The tumor size increased within the 1 year of observation and was suspected to be a malignant choroidal melanoma. Since the patient strongly wished to preserve hi

Local resection of uveal melanoma.

This article describes the techniques, indications, and results of local resection of intraocular melanomas using (1) the external approach with lamellar scleral dissection and hypotensive anaesthesia and (2) in the transvitreal approach (endoresection). In principle, local resection is indicated for iris and ciliary body tumours and for medium and large choroidal tumours which are not expected to do well after radiotherapy. Contraindications to local resection are optic disc involvement, significant extraocular tumour extension, and involvement of more than a third of the ciliary body or angl

[A rare case of choroid plexus papilloma in the third ventricle].

A rare case of choroid plexus papilloma in the third ventricle is presented. A 19 year old male patient was admitted to our hospital for further examination of a head injury. On admission, he was asymptomatic. CT and MRI showed a homogeneous mass extending from the third ventricle to the right lateral ventricle. The right lateral ventricle was slightly enlarged. Craniograms showed calcification above the sella turcica. Cerebral angiograms disclosed a tumor stain fed by the right medial posterior choroidal artery in the third ventricle. Anterior transcallosal approach was chosen for the extirpa

Congenital choroid plexus papilloma: light and electron microscopic study of a case.

The outcome of a light and electron microscopic study of a congenital choroid plexus papilloma removed from a lateral cerebral ventricle of a 10-day-old male presenting hypertensive hydrocephalus at birth is reported. The tumor was diagnosed by CT and cerebral angiography. The findings, compared with those obtained from choroid plexuses of controls subjected to hemispherectomy for epilepsy, highlight the intense metabolic activity of the papilloma and the relevance of this to the communicating hydrocephalus that is frequently associated with it.

Choroid plexus papilloma and infantile spasms.

A 7-month-old infant had the infantile spasm syndrome, consisting of flexor and extensor spasms, developmental delay, and hypsarrhythmia. Corticotropin produced delay, and hypsarrhythmia. Corticotropin produced improvement in the clinical symptoms and reverted the generalized electroencephalographic abnormalities to more focal ones. Removal of a choroid plexus papilloma of the left lateral ventricle was followed by clinical recovery. One year later the child was normal developmentally and neurologically and was seizure free on anticonvulsant therapy.

Choroid plexus carcinoma (a case report).

The authors report one case of choroid plexus carcinoma of the fourth ventricle; they also review all cases reported in the literature and emphasize the histological criteria which must be followed employing the most modern radiological techniques in order to exclude especially metastatized tumors in other organs.

Pulsating enophthalmos and choroidal hamartomas: two rare stigmata of neurofibromatosis.

A young girl with neurofibromatosis demonstrated two rare stigmata of this disease--pulsating enophthalmos and multiple pigmented choroidal hamartomata. Fundus photographs of the latter are believed to be the first of their kind to be published.
