The application of a simple technique for purification of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is described. TBE virus was grown in chick embryo cell (CE) cultures and the virus was concentrated by differential centrifugation. Final purification was made by the filtration through Sepharose column to which monoclonal antibodies to TBE virus had been bound. The method was effective in eliminating avian retroviruses.

Urine samples (n = 300) were examined for drugs by thin-layer chromatography ("Drug Skreen", Brinkmann Corp.) and by the "Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique" ("Emit", Syav Corp.). We applied a commercially available microelectrolytic conductivity detector to toxicological problems of qualitative and quantitative analysis by gas chromatography. The detector can be used for the sensitive and selective detection of halogen-, nitrogen-, and sulfur-containing compounds. Relative response in different element-selective detector variables such as reaction gas, reaction catalyst, and furnace temperature can be used to further improve qualitative identification by gas chromatography.

A method is described which allows the in vivo determination of the phenylalanine hydroxylating system in atypical and classical phenylketonuria. Phenylalanine-d7 is administered i.v. (0.030 g/kg body weight) within 10 min. Tyrosine-d6 in plasma is measured from 30 to 240 min post load by using a computerized capillary gas chromatography/mass fragmentography system.
