Incipient speciation, high genetic diversity, and ecological divergence in the alligator bark juniper suggest complex demographic changes during the Pleistocene.

The most recent glacial cycles of the Pleistocene affected the distribution, population sizes, and levels of genetic structure of temperate-forest species in the main Mexican mountain systems. Our objective was to investigate the effects these cycles had on the genetic structure and distribution of a dominant species of the "mexical" vegetation across North and Central America. We studied the genetic diversity of Juniperus deppeana, a conifer distributed from the Southwestern United States to the highlands of Central America. We combined information of one plastid marker and two nuclear marker

Modeling malaria as a complex adaptive system.

As the resistance of the malaria parasite to antimalarial drugs continues to increase, as does that of the malarial mosquito to insecticides, the efficacy of efforts to control malaria in many tropical countries is diminishing. This trend, together with the projected consequences of climate change, may prove to exacerbate substantially the significance of malaria in the coming decades. In this article we introduce the use of an evolutionary modeling approach to simulate the adaptation of mosquitoes and parasites to the available pesticides and drugs. By coupling genetic algorithms with a dynam

Simulating latrine conditions to assess perfume performance against malodour.

To evaluate perfume performance in toilets, we built model toilets in which critical factors such as background malodour, climate, and airflow were controlled. The models were equipped with an odour generator that injected hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, butyric acid, para-cresol, and indole, allowing us to accurately and reliably reconstitute toilet malodour headspace. The malodorant concentrations matched the quantitative headspace analysis performed in African and Indian toilets. The toilet malodour headspace performance was validated by chemical and sensory analysis. Olfactory stimuli

Spatial modeling of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Andean region of Colombia.

The objective of this research was to identify environmental risk factors for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Colombia and map high-risk municipalities. The study area was the Colombian Andean region, comprising 715 rural and urban municipalities. We used 10 years of CL surveillance: 2000-2009. We used spatial-temporal analysis - conditional autoregressive Poisson random effects modelling - in a Bayesian framework to model the dependence of municipality-level incidence on land use, climate, elevation and population density. Bivariable spatial analysis identified rainforests, forests and second

Financial Impacts of Liver Fluke on Livestock Farms Under Climate Change-A Farm Level Assessment.

Liver fluke infection (fascioliasis) is a parasitic disease which affects the health and welfare of ruminants. It is a concern for the livestock industry and is considered as a growing threat to the industry because changing climatic conditions are projected to be more favorable to increased frequency and intensity of liver fluke outbreaks. Recent reports highlighted that the incidence and geographic range of liver fluke has increased in the UK over the last decade and estimated to increase the average risk of liver fluke in the UK due to increasing temperature and rainfall. This paper explore

Nasal airflow simulations suggest convergent adaptation in Neanderthals and modern humans.

Both modern humans (MHs) and Neanderthals successfully settled across western Eurasian cold-climate landscapes. Among the many adaptations considered as essential to survival in such landscapes, changes in the nasal morphology and/or function aimed to humidify and warm the air before it reaches the lungs are of key importance. Unfortunately, the lack of soft-tissue evidence in the fossil record turns difficult any comparative study of respiratory performance. Here, we reconstruct the internal nasal cavity of a Neanderthal plus two representatives of climatically divergent MH populations (south

Analysis of factors influencing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and its prediction in Weifang, China from 2013 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology and trends of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Weifang, China (2013-2021) and to guide prevention strategies. METHODS: The study examined the prevalence and incidence trends of HFRS in Weifang (2013-2021). Spearman correlation and wavelet analysis were employed to explore variable relationships and their associations with HFRS incidence. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to identify key risk factors, while structural equation modeling (SEM) quantified direct and indirect pathways influencing HFRS transmission.

Beyond the sine wave: unveiling climate-driven baseline mortality cycles.

The relationship between temperature and mortality is well-established, with higher mortality rates occurring in moderate climates during winter. Studies on COVID-19 and influenza-related excess deaths often assume a sine-like wave pattern for baseline mortality. This study aims to assess the accuracy of this approximation in capturing the observed mortality pattern and explore its linkage with climate. Weekly mortality data from European regions (2000-2019) were modeled using the seasonal-trend decomposition procedure based on Loess. Cycles were grouped into clusters, and underlying trends we

AIRTREE v2.0: predicting ecosystem services provided by Italian urban parks under climate change scenarios.

In an era of climate change and increasing air pollution, accurately quantifying forest ecosystem services-particularly in urban and peri-urban contexts-is essential. Species selection for these areas requires identifying trees that are both climate-resilient and effective at carbon sequestration and pollutant removal. We present an upgraded version of the AIRTREE v1.0 multi-layer canopy model to assess ecosystem services provided by urban parks placed in 43 Italian sites established under a national reforestation program. Simulations were performed under two climate scenarios (Representative

Background: Ukraine has substantial regional differences in climate, landscape, forest cover, and river networks, which may influence leptospirosis transmission. However, recent monthly oblast-level variation in leptospirosis incidence has not been systematically described. We used newly available surveillance data for 2023-2025 to assess seasonal and regional patterns of leptospirosis and their associations with weather, climatic zone, forest cover, and river network density. Methods: We analyzed surveillance data from 23 Ukrainian oblasts. Incidence was assessed by month, oblast, and climati

PROJECTING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON INTER-EPIDEMIC RISK OF RIFT VALLEY FEVER ACROSS EAST AFRICA.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease that causes sporadic, multi-country epidemics. However, RVF virus (RVFV) also circulates during inter-epidemic periods. There is limited understanding of how climate change will affect inter-epidemic RVF. Here, we project inter-epidemic RVF risk under future climate scenarios, focusing on the East African countries of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. METHODS: We combined data on inter-epidemic RVF outbreaks and spatially-explicit predictor variables to build a predictive model of inter-epidemic RVF risk. We validated our model using RVFV s

Potential impacts of climate change on geographical distribution of three primary vectors of African Trypanosomiasis in Tanzania's Maasai Steppe: G. m. morsitans, G. pallidipes and G. swynnertoni.

In the Maasai Steppe, public health and economy are threatened by African Trypanosomiasis, a debilitating and fatal disease to livestock (African Animal Trypanosomiasis -AAT) and humans (Human African Trypanosomiasis-HAT), if not treated. The tsetse fly is the primary vector for both HAT and AAT and climate is an important predictor of their occurrence and the parasites they carry. While understanding tsetse fly distribution is essential for informing vector and disease control strategies, existing distribution maps are old and were based on coarse spatial resolution data, consequently, inaccu

Host responses and viral traits interact to shape the impacts of climate warming on highly pathogenic avian influenza in migratory waterfowl.

Emerging infectious diseases pose threats to wildlife populations, as exemplified by recent outbreaks of avian influenza viruses in wild birds. Climate change can affect infection dynamics in wildlife through direct effects on pathogens (e.g., environmental decay rates) and changes to host ecology, including shifting migration patterns. Here, we adapt an existing mechanistic model that couples migration and infection to study how traits of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses contribute to HPAI outcomes in migratory waterfowl, then apply this model to explore potential impacts of c

Impact of Environmental Factors on the Distribution Patterns of Nephropathia Epidemica Cases in Western Europe.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors, such as fluctuations of climatic conditions and land cover, play a pivotal role in driving infectious disease epidemics, particularly those originating from wildlife reservoirs. Orthohantavirus puumalaense, hosted by bank voles in Europe, is the causative agent of a form of hemorrhagic fever and renal syndrome called nephropathia epidemica. Despite two decades of consistent presence in western Europe, nephropathia epidemica outbreaks still pose challenges due to localized periodic occurrences and a lack of understanding of its environmental drivers. OBJECTIV

Machine learning-based solar radiation prediction across heterogeneous climatic zones using NASA POWER data: a case study in Nigeria.

Accurate prediction of solar radiation is essential for renewable energy planning, climate analysis, and agricultural productivity. Solar radiation data are required for the evaluation of solar power generation potential and crop water requirement computation, which is almost unavailable due to insufficient instrument for its measurement in many locations of the developing nations. Studies that applied several kernels of the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) for the prediction of solar radiation are scarce. This study evaluates the performance of several machine learning models for solar radia

Distinct genecological patterns in seedlings of Norway spruce and silver fir from a mountainous landscape.

Understanding the genecology of forest trees is critical for gene conservation, for predicting the effects of climate change and climate change adaptation, and for successful reforestation. Although common genecological patterns have emerged, species-specific details are also important. Which species are most vulnerable to climate change? Which are the most important adaptive traits and environmental drivers of natural selection? Even though species have been classified as adaptive specialists vs. adaptive generalists, large-scale studies comparing different species in the same experiment are

Assessing stand development controls on carbon sequestration and carbon credit value in tropical introduced teak plantation.

Plantation forestry is increasingly promoted as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation in tropical regions due to its capacity to store carbon while generating economic value. This study evaluated age-related variation in stand structure, biomass, carbon stocks, and associated economic returns in introduced teak (Tectona grandis) plantations in Nigeria. Field data were collected from four age classes (12, 15, 21, and 23 years) using a stratified random sampling approach, and relationships were analyzed using generalized linear models, principal component analysis, and Mantel tes
