[Using Multiple Strategies to Improve Medication Cognition in Patients After Liver Transplantation].

BACKGROUND & PROBLEMS: Patients with liver transplantation must take lifelong immunosuppressant medication to maintain the function of their hepatic graft. Based on clinical experience, we found that these patients were affected by both insufficient and remaining medication when they returned for outpatient service visits. After investigating the current situation, It was found that post-transplantation perceptions regarding medication were low in this patient group. After analysis, the identified causes of this included: (1) poor learning effect due to the interference from the multiple thera

A second X chromosome improves cognition in aging male and female mice.

Women show resilience to cognitive aging, in the absence of dementia, in many populations. To dissect sex differences, we utilized the FCG and XY* mouse models. Female gonads and sex chromosomes improved cognition in aging mice of both sexes. Further, presence of a second X in male and female mice conferred cognitive resilience while its absence in females blocked it. In the hippocampal proteome of aging female mice, the second X increased proteins involved in synaptogenesis signaling - a potential pathway to improved cognition.

Developmental Associations between Cognition and Adaptive Behavior in Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are associated with both cognitive challenges and difficulties in conceptual, social, and practical areas of living (DSM-5). Individuals with IDD often present with an intellectual disability in addition to a developmental disability such as autism or Down syndrome. Those with IDD may present with deficits in intellectual functioning as well as adaptive functioning that interfere with independence and living skills. The present study sought to examine associations of longitudinal developmental change in domains of cognition (NIH To…

Developmental associations between cognition and adaptive behavior in intellectual and developmental disability.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are associated with both cognitive challenges and difficulties in conceptual, social, and practical areas of living, commonly referred to as adaptive behavior (DSM-5). Although cross-sectional associations between intelligence or cognition and adaptive behavior have been reported in IDD populations, no study to date has examined whether developmental changes in cognition contribute to or track with changes in adaptive behavior. The present study sought to examine associations of longitudinal developmental change in domains of cogni…

The parietal architecture binding cognition to sensorimotor integration: a multimodal causal study.

Despite human's praxis abilities are unique among primates, comparative observations suggest that these cognitive motor skills could have emerged from exploitation and adaptation of phylogenetically older building blocks, namely the parieto-frontal networks subserving prehension and manipulation. Within this framework, investigating to which extent praxis and prehension-manipulation overlap and diverge within parieto-frontal circuits could help in understanding how human cognition shapes hand actions. This issue has never been investigated by combining lesion mapping and direct electrophysiolo…

Alpha tACS Improves Cognition and Modulates Neurotransmission in Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by a marked shift of electroencephalographic (EEG) power and dominant rhythm, from the α toward the θ frequency range. Transcranial alternate current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that allows entrainment of cerebral oscillations at desired frequencies. OBJECTIVES: Our goal is to evaluate the effects of occipital α-tACS on cognitive functions and neurophysiological measures in patients with DLB. METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, cross-over clinical trial in 14 parti

Wake slow waves in focal human epilepsy impact network activity and cognition.

Slow waves of neuronal activity are a fundamental component of sleep that are proposed to have homeostatic and restorative functions. Despite this, their interaction with pathology is unclear and there is only indirect evidence of their presence during wakefulness. Using intracortical recordings from the temporal lobe of 25 patients with epilepsy, we demonstrate the existence of local wake slow waves (LoWS) with key features of sleep slow waves, including a down-state of neuronal firing. Consistent with a reduction in neuronal activity, LoWS were associated with slowed cognitive processing. Ho

Beyond cardiovascular risk: Implications of Familial hypercholesterolemia on cognition and brain function.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a metabolic condition caused mainly by a mutation in the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor gene (LDLR), which is highly prevalent in the population. Besides being an important causative factor of cardiovascular diseases, FH has been considered an early risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive and emotional behavioral impairments in LDL receptor knockout (LDLr-/-) mice are associated with neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier dysfunction, impaired neurogenesis, brain oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Notably, today, LDLr-/- mice,

Effect of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors on Cerebral Perfusion and Cognition: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Perfusion imaging has the potential to identify neurodegenerative disorders in a preclinical stage. However, to correctly interpret perfusion-derived parameters, the impact of perfusion modifiers should be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, the impact of acute and chronic intake of four acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) on cerebral perfusion in adults was investigated: physostigmine, donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine. RESULTS: Chronic AChEI treatment results in an increase of cerebral perfusion in treatment-responsive patients with Alzheimer's disease,

Cognitive-behavioral reciprocity: Testing the bidirectional relationship between antisocial cognition and delinquency.

OBJECTIVE: Although reciprocity between variables is a topic of interest in the field of criminology, we cannot simply assume that all or even most criminological relationships are bidirectional without testing them empirically. The objective of the current investigation was to test whether delinquency and antisocial cognition are reciprocally or bidirectionally related. HYPOTHESES: The hypotheses evaluated as part of the present study proposed that antisocial cognition would predict delinquency, delinquency would predict antisocial cognition, and bidirectional models would display significan…

Associations Between TREML2 Gene Variants and Alzheimer's Disease: Biomarkers, Neuroimage, and Cognition.

BACKGROUND: Recent genetic research identified a protective factor against late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Caucasians, a variant called rs3747742-C in the TREML2 gene. However, the roles of other TREML2 variants in AD have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a focused analysis of 16 TREML2 variants, examining their connection to AD by studying their correlation with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins, neuroimage, and cognition in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database (ADNI). METHODS: A multiple linear regression model was utilized to estimate potential …

Evolving cognition of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway: autoimmune disorders and cancer.

The Janus kinase (JAK) signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism of transmembrane signal transduction that enables cells to communicate with the exterior environment. Various cytokines, interferons, growth factors, and other specific molecules activate JAK-STAT signaling to drive a series of physiological and pathological processes, including proliferation, metabolism, immune response, inflammation, and malignancy. Dysregulated JAK-STAT signaling and related genetic mutations are strongly associated with immune activation and c

Cognition and post-concussive symptom status after pediatric mild traumatic brain injury.

Cognitive impairment and post-concussive symptoms (PCS) represent hallmark sequelae of pediatric mild traumatic brain injury (pmTBI). Few studies have directly compared cognition as a function of PCS status longitudinally. Cognitive outcomes were therefore compared for asymptomatic pmTBI, symptomatic pmTBI, and healthy controls (HC) during sub-acute (SA; 1-11 days) and early chronic (EC; approximately 4 months) post-injury phases. We predicted worse cognitive performance for both pmTBI groups relative to HC at the SA visit. At the EC visit, we predicted continued impairment from the symptomati…

Exploring social cognition in individuals with neuropsychiatric symptoms following acquired brain injury.

In this study, we explored the social cognitive skills of individuals with neuropsychiatric symptoms following acquired brain injury (ABI). To this end, a retrospective chart review was carried out. We examined scores on social cognition tests that were administered as part of routine neuropsychological assessment at a Dutch specialized care facility for patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms following ABI. In addition, correlations with time post injury were explored. Aspects of social cognition (emotion recognition, Theory of Mind (ToM) and empathy) were measured using the Emotion Recogniti…

The association between cardiovascular health and cognition in adults with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence in the general population suggests that predictors of cardiovascular health such as moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), cardiorespiratory fitness, and systolic blood pressure are associated with cognitive function. Studies supporting these associations in adults with Down syndrome (DS) are limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between systolic blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness, and MVPA on cognition in adults with DS. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis using baseline data from a trial in adults with DS. Participan…

Genetically Predicted Blood Pressure and Cognition in Midlife: A UK Biobank Study.

BACKGROUND: This UK Biobank study uses a mendelian randomization approach to mitigate the variability and confounding that has affected previous analyses of the relationship between measured blood pressure (BP) and cognition and thus delineate the true association between the two. METHODS: Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP polygenic risk scores (PRSs) were calculated using summary statistics from the International Consortium of Blood Pressure-Genome Wide Association Study (n=299 024). Adjusted nonlinear mixed-effects regression models were used, including a natural splines term for BP-PRS wi…
