Regulatory roles of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation in RNA processing and non-communicable diseases.

Post-transcriptional RNA modification is an emerging epigenetic control mechanism in cells that is important in many different cellular and organismal processes. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most prevalent, prolific, and ubiquitous internal transcriptional alterations in eukaryotic mRNAs, making it an important topic in the field of Epigenetics. m6A methylation acts as a dynamical regulatory process that regulates the activity of genes and participates in multiple physiological processes, by supporting multiple aspects of essential mRNA metabolic processes, including pre-mRNA splicin

Perceptions of Tobacco Price Policy among Students from Sapienza University of Rome: Can This Policy Mitigate Smoking Addiction and Its Health Impacts?

Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Avoiding youth initiation and treating addiction are fundamental public health issues to ensure better health. Among tobacco control policies, increasing tobacco price is the single most effective intervention. It reduces tobacco consumption, especially among youths, while representing a government financing source. This study aimed to assess the agreement with the proposal of a one-euro increase in tobacco price earmarked to health issues among students at Sapienza University. Two convenience samples were surveyed, fiv

Infection prevention and control measures for emerging infectious disease: lessons learned from the first case of imported Lassa fever in China.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease prevalent in West Africa. West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCHSCU) received China's first imported case of Lassa fever from overseas. We described the epidemiological investigation and infection prevention and control measures of this case following the confirmed diagnosis. METHODS: An emergency epidemiological team defined close contacts and implemented infection prevention and control (IPC) measures: (1) isolation in a designated isolation room, (2) environmental disinfection for high-, medium-, and low-risk areas, (3)

Setting Our Sights on Infectious Diseases.

In May 2019, the Wellcome Centre for Anti-Infectives Research (WCAIR) at the University of Dundee, UK, held an international conference with the aim of discussing some key questions around discovering new medicines for infectious diseases and a particular focus on diseases affecting Low and Middle Income Countries. There is an urgent need for new drugs to treat most infectious diseases. We were keen to see if there were lessons that we could learn across different disease areas and between the preclinical and clinical phases with the aim of exploring how we can improve and speed up the drug di

Prevention of infectious diseases in patients with Good syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Good syndrome is a profoundly immunocompromising condition with heterogeneous immune deficits characterized by the presence of thymoma, low-to-absent B-lymphocyte counts, hypogammaglobulinemia, and impaired cell-mediated immunity. Opportunistic infectious diseases associated with Good syndrome represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, given their protean clinical manifestations. Although these infectious complications have been reviewed in prior publications, recommendations regarding their prevention have been lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: Good syndrome usually occurs

Emerging and re-emerging arboviral diseases in Southeast Asia.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) have become significant public health problems, with the emergence and re-emergence of arboviral diseases nearly worldwide. The most populated Southeast Asia region is particularly vulnerable. The arboviral diseases such as dengue (DEN), Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile virus (WNV), chikungunya fever (CHIK), hemorrhagic fevers such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic (CCHF) fever, Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), etc. are on the rise and have spread unprecedentedly, causing considerable burden of disease. The emergence/re-emergence of these diseases is

Translational medicine policy issues in infectious disease.

The European Academies Science Advisory Council has published a series of reports on infectious disease policy issues, analyzing priorities for building the science base as part of public health strategy. Among current challenges facing the European Union are the needs to tackle antibiotic resistance, promote vaccine innovation, prepare for the emergence of novel zoonoses, and integrate research approaches to human and animal health. The scientific community must help public policy-makers to address the organization, balance, and sustainability of research funding and infrastructure; encourage

Projected benefits from integrating NTD programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The integration of preventive chemotherapy programs (PCPs) targeting multiple neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with similar strategic approaches offers opportunities for enhanced cost-effectiveness. To estimate the potential cost savings and health outcomes of integrated programs, the data available for five NTDs (lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, intestinal helminthiasis, schistosomiasis and trachoma) can be used to define eligible target populations, the probable overlap of at-risk populations, and the cost per person treated in stand-alone and integrated programs. If all targets for 2

[Viral encephalitis virus, a new bioterrorist menace].

Often responsible for little known infections, today viral encephalitis viruses appear as a new bioterrorist menace, because of their easy production and their great pathogenic potential. Spraying is the best way to permit the rapid diffusion of certain encephalitis viruses. Diagnosis of viral encephalitis, predominating in tropical surroundings, is difficult. In the majority of cases, symptoms differ little from those of common flu. With supplementary examinations, the biological abnormalities are usually non-specific. There are no characteristic images on scans or MRI. Identification of the

[Hepatitis as a travel disease].

Every year over 50 million people travel from industrialized countries to areas with high prevalence of oral-fecal and sexually transmissible forms of viral hepatitis. The risk of infection with hepatitis A is associated with the standard of living, the length of stay, and the area of destination. Acute hepatitis E is predominantly transmitted in India and other Asian countries. The main risk factors for the acquisition of hepatitis B are sexual promiscuity and unprotected sexual intercourse. This report provides detailed information on the risk of hepatitis in travelers, available vaccination

Women at risk for infection: the woman who is chemically dependent.

Chemical dependency is recognized as an important threat to women's physical and emotional well-being. The drug-seeking lifestyle, debilitating effects of drug use, and chosen method of administration place women who are chemically dependent at increased risk for a variety of infections and other physical and psychologic complications. The desire to obtain the drug of choice often overrules the desire to maintain self-protective and health-promoting activities. Health care professionals are challenged to provide education regarding the potential effects of chemical dependency, treatment opport

Some bounds on estimates for reproductive ratios derived from the age-specific force of infection.

In this paper we shall look at estimation of reproductive ratios for common childhood infections such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, and hepatitis A with and without a vaccination program. The paper starts with a survey of previous work in this area. We suppose that we are given data in the form of an age-related serological profile with a given vaccination program. This is used to estimate the reproductive ratio and evaluate vaccination campaigns. The effect of different mixing patterns, such as homogeneous mixing, assortative mixing, proportional mixing, and symmetric mixing are discussed. R

The British Paediatric Surveillance Unit: activities and developments in 1990 and 1991.

The British Paediatric Surveillance Unit is a joint undertaking of the British Paediatric Association, the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre and the Department of Epidemiology at the Institute of Child Health, London. It provides an active case reporting system which aims to facilitate the surveillance of rare childhood infections and other conditions. Cards with a menu of up to twelve reportable disorders are sent monthly to more than 1100 paediatricians throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The average response rate is 90%. Reported cases are followed up according to study p

Assessment of control strategies against Clonorchis sinensis infection based on a multi-group dynamic transmission model.

Clonorchiasis is one of the most important food-borne trematodiases affecting millions of people. Strategies were recommended by different organizations and control programmes were implemented but mostly in short-time periods. It's important to assess the long-term benefits and sustainability of possible control strategies on morbidity control of the disease. We developed a multi-group transmission model to describe the dynamics of C. sinensis transmission among different groups of people with different raw-fish-consumption behaviors, based on which, a full model with interventions was propose

Effects of public health interventions in reducing transmission of hand, foot, and mouth disease.

We evaluated the effect of public health interventions including territory-wide school closure and hygiene campaigns during 2003 and 2009 in reducing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). We compared the observed and projected HFMD consultation rates among sentinel general practitioners using a decomposition regression model. Public health measures were effective in reducing HFMD by 57.2% (95% CI: 53.0%-60.7%) and 26.7% (95% CI: 19.5%-32.7%) in 2003 and 2009, respectively.

A myth too tough to die: the dead of disasters cause epidemics of disease.

Myths abound in the practice of health care, death, and disease. Akin to the old adage of swallowing camels and straining gnats, the myth that mass fatalities cause epidemics of disease following natural or other disasters is alive and well. Despite the findings of observers, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and other scientists, even medical doctors and public health professionals lend support to the ancient belief and rush into mass graves or mass cremations the bodies of those victims of trauma in a disaster. Putting this myth to rest depends on use of information concerning the transmissi
