Creating Integrated Strategies for Increasing Access to Healthy Affordable Food in Urban Communities: A Case Study of Intersecting Food Initiatives.

In New York and other cities, substantial evidence documents that community food environments interact with inequitable allocation of power, wealth, and services to shape the distribution of diet-related diseases and food insecurity. This case study shows how one Central Brooklyn community organization, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, has launched multiple coordinated food initiatives in order to reduce the burden of food-related health problems and boost community development. The report used standard case study methods to document the implementation of the New York City Food and

Community-based approach to schistosomiasis control.

With few exceptions, efforts to control schistosomiasis have relied upon ongoing community cooperation with "outsiders' rather than creating within the community the capacity and means for carrying out ongoing disease control measures with minimal external support. Offered as a useful model is a program in Kaele subdivision, Extreme North Province, Cameroon designed to establish and integrate within the primary health care (PHC) system the control of urinary schistosomiasis, hyperendemic in the region. At the community level, and with minimal dependence upon external resources, culturally appr

Organisational change and employee mental health: a conceptual framework integrating conservation of resources theory and the job demands-resources model.

Organisational change has intensified in recent years in response to shifting workplace expectations, rapid technological developments, the effects of COVID-19, and evolving work patterns. While such transformation is often necessary for organisational sustainability, it can increase uncertainty, alter job demands, and place emotional pressure on employees. Drawing on Conservation of Resources theory, this article suggests that employees may view change as a threat to valued personal and work resources, heightening stress responses. The Job Demands-Resources model further illustrates how incre

Programming Gut Microbiome Function Through Cross-Feeding: From Ecological Mechanisms to Live Biotherapeutics.

Gut microbial cross-feeding links the production, release, and reutilization of resources across community members, but its ecological consequences are shaped by competition, antagonism, host selection, and recipient identity. Despite rapid advances, major gaps remain between predicting metabolic complementarity, demonstrating causal donor-resource-recipient transfer, establishing ecological robustness, and achieving therapeutic benefit. Here, we organize current evidence within a Mechanism-Technology-Application framework. We summarize four representative and non-exclusive resource-transfer s

Applying community health systems lenses to identify determinants of access to surgery among mobile & migrant populations with hydrocele in Zambia: A mixed methods assessment.

Hydrocele which is caused by long term lymphatic filariasis infection can be treated through the provision of surgery. Access to surgeries remains low particularly for hard to reach populations. This study applied community health system lenses to identify determinants to the adoption, implementation and integration of hydrocele surgeries among migrants &mobile populations in Luangwa District, Zambia. A concurrent mixed methods design consisting of cross-sectional survey with hydrocele patients (n = 438) and in-depth interviews with different community actors (n = 38) was conducted in October

Community Guide Methods for Systematic Reviews of Economic Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Community Guide systematic economic reviews provide information on the cost, economic benefit, cost-benefit, and cost-effectiveness of public health interventions recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force on the basis of evidence of effectiveness. The number and variety of economic evaluation studies in public health have grown substantially over time, contributing to methodologic challenges that required updates to the methods for Community Guide systematic economic reviews. This paper describes these updated methods. METHODS: The 9-step Community Guide econom

Individual and Community-Level Predictors of Anemia in Chicago-Area Pregnancies: A Multi-Level Analysis of Electronic Health Record Data.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is associated with pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, peripartum hemorrhage, and maternal and fetal mortality. Pregnant people of color have higher anemia prevalence compared with White pregnant people, contributing to disparities in pregnancy outcomes. Social determinants of health (SDoH), place-based characteristics that negatively influence health, may help explain anemia disparities. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to quantify community-level variation in prenatal anemia prevalence and identify associated individual- and community-level characteristics. METHODS: El

Racialized Migrant Transgender Women Engaged in Sex Work: Double Binds and Identifications with the Community.

Racialized migrant transgender women engaged in sex work represent an understudied population. They face unique challenges resulting from their multiple marginalized identities, such as racialized transmisogyny. Since marginalized communities play a vital role in mitigating systemic stigma, it is essential to expand the literature on the community of this population. The present study used the frameworks of gender minority stress and intersectionality, along with a decolonial and transfeminist approach. Twenty participants aged between 28 and 66 years old (M = 43.15; SD = 10.49) took part in a

Filling the gap: artificial intelligence-driven one health integration to strengthen pandemic preparedness in resource-limited settings.

Emerging zoonotic pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and Nipah virus demonstrate the critical need for integrated surveillance systems connecting human, animal, and environmental health. This review examines how artificial intelligence can address One Health integration gaps in pandemic surveillance, focusing on resource-limited settings. While global digitization levels now support Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered platforms, LMICs face barriers including limited resources and fragmented data systems. Current AI tools remain domain-specific and designed for high-income settings, limiting its applic

Development and operation of a program to obtain volunteer bone marrow donors unrelated to the patient.

Because of recent increases in bone marrow transplantation, the lack of available matched sibling donors has become a problem. This study investigated the feasibility of obtaining volunteer bone marrow donors unrelated to the patient. A program was developed to inform potential donors and obtain their consent for listing in a bone marrow donor registry. Sixty-six percent of whole blood or apheresis donors agreed to participate in the program. There were no demographic differences between those who accepted or declined to participate. Religion, experiences with medical practices, and the attitu
