Previous studies have shown that the small-bowel shunt operation for morbid obesity may be followed by signs of enhanced cell-mediated immunity and polymorphonuclear (PMN) granulocyte bactericidal capacity. A concise but critical review of the literature on the immunological aspects of sickle cell syndrome (SCS) was carried out. This exercise revealed our poor understanding of the immune status of these persons, while most of them succumb to overwhelming infections. We used laser nephelometric technique to quantitate the C4. Endocervical biopsies taken from 74 female patients with gonorrhea and 18 healthy women were investigated by means of fluorescence with regard to the evidence of IgA, IgG, IgM, C3, C4, fibrinogen, lysozyme, and N. gonorrhoeae. Whereas C3, C4, fibrinogen, lysozyme, and N. gonorrhoeae were especially observed in the early stages of the disease, the amount of plasma cells producing IgA and IgG were found increased in the advanced stages of gonorrhea.

4 children with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura were treated with high dose i.v. IgG. Platelet associated immunoproteins were determined with an Elisa technique. Platelet counts increased in all patients, while simultaneously platelet associated IgG, IgA, IgM, C3 and C4 decreased. Serum antiplatelet antibody increased during treatment suggesting that administration of high doses of IgG interferes with the binding of antiplatelet antibody.

BACKGROUND: Meningococcal infections associated with late complement component deficiency are rarely severe and usually occur during adolescence and adulthood. We report severe manifestations in a boy in whom the first episode appeared early.
CASE REPORT: A 14 year-old gypsy boy was admitted because of a febrile meningococcal meningitis that was complicated by a rapidly extensive and necrotic purpura, obnubilation and clotting abnormalities without hemodynamic anomalies. The patient was given symptomatic therapy and a 12-day course of antibiotics that resulted in rapid and complete recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is characterized by central nervous system inflammation and demyelination. In AQP4-IgG seropositive NMOSD, circulating immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies against astrocyte water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) cause tissue injury. Severe septic complications account for the high mortality of patients with esophageal cancer.
