Comprehensive analysis of high-resolution mass spectra of aged natural dammar resin obtained with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR-MS) using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) is presented. Dammar resin is one of the most important components of painting varnishes. Dammar resin is a terpenoid resin (dominated by triterpenoids) with intrinsically very complex composition. This complexity further increases with aging. Ten different solvents and two-component solvent mixtures were tested for sa

Kozo washi is an archival-grade paper commonly used in the conservation of museum objects. This paper can be combined with widely used archival adhesives to form lightweight composites of natural fibers and thermoplastic resin, which can be used in fossil preparation. Unlike conventional gypsum compounds, epoxy, or metal supports, paper-resin composites are easily reversed and are made from archival materials, so they conform to modern conservation standards. We present the new "Mayborn Method," a suite of techniques for reconstructing fossil specimens while retaining suitability for radiograp

Introduction of thiourethane (TU) oligomer to resin-based dental restorative materials reduces stress and improves fracture toughness without compromising conversion. Localization of TU at the resin-filler interface via silanization procedures may lead to more substantial stress reduction and clinical property enhancements. The objective of this study was to evaluate composite properties as a function of TU-functionalized filler concentration. TU oligomers were synthesized using click-chemistry techniques and subsequently silanized to barium glass filler. Resin-based composites were formulated

Nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC), a type of cellulose nanofiber biosynthesized by Gluconacetobacter sp., has extremely long (i.e., high-aspect-ratio) fibers that are expected to be useful as nanofillers for fiber-reinforced composite resins. In this study, we investigated a composite of NFBC and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a highly transparent resin, with the aim of improving the mechanical properties of the latter. The abundant hydroxyl groups on the NFBC surface were silylated using 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), a silane coupling agent bearing a methacryl…

The surging demand for environmentally benign alternatives to petroleum-based resins has sparked interest in bio-derived phenolic systems for biocomposites and additive manufacturing. This study reports the development of an extruded tannin-PRF (phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde) resin-wood composites using ponderosa pine bark tannins (PT) and commercial maritime pine bark tannins (CT) as renewable phenolic substitutes. The hybridization of tannins with PRF aimed to enhance renewable content while retaining the mechanical and thermal performance essential for extrusion-based manufacturing. All re

Epoxy resins are widely used in electronic packaging and electrical insulation, but their permanent cross-linked networks and low intrinsic thermal conductivity restrict material recycling and heat dissipation. In this work, a recyclable epoxy composite was developed by combining a dual-dynamic epoxy network with silica-coated poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fibers. The composite architecture integrates thermally activated network rearrangement, amine-induced matrix degradation, electrically insulating fibrous heat transport, and recovery of the reinforcing phase within a single material sys

A technique that utilizes acid-etched composite resin to maintain antimicrobial-containing acrylic resin strips in situ is described. The advantage of this technique is that placement of a periodontal pack is unnecessary, so control of supragingival plaque is not hindered at the site of the local antimicrobial delivery. The technique described may improve the effectiveness and the clinical acceptability of local antimicrobials in the treatment of periodontal disease.

OBJECTIVES: Current dental resins exhibit polymerization shrinkage causing microleakage, which has the potential to cause recurrent caries. Our objectives were to create and characterize low-shrinkage-stress (LSS) composites with dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM) as an antibacterial agent to combat recurrent caries.
METHODS: Triethylene glycol divinylbenzyl ether and urethane dimethacrylate were used to reduce shrinkage stress. DMADDM was incorporated at different mass fractions (0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 5%). Flexural strength, elastic modulus, degree of conversion, polymerization stress, a
