Cryoamputation, or physiologic amputation, is a well-described procedure typically used to amputate gangrenous lower extremities. In such cases the patient is too unstable for transport to the operating room, so cryoamputation using dry ice or other refrigerant allows for immediate bedside intervention and later operative amputation when the patient is more stable. Rosacea is a multiphasic disease which is associated with flushing, erythrosis, papulopustular rosacea and phymas; each phase is likely to have its own treatment. Anogenital warts are caused by human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 infection, and are the most common clinical manifestation of lower genital tract human papillomavirus infection. They are the most frequently recognized sexually transmitted disease in the developed world, occurring at an incidence rate of 0.5-1.2% in young men and women aged 18-25 years. Many therapies for genital warts have been described, none being ideal in that all therapeutic modalities fail to clear the warts in a proportion of patients, and the recurrence of warts after successful treatment is seen with all treatments.

We report two cases of acute epididymo-orchitis developing 4 to 6 weeks after cryoablation for prostate cancer. One patient required a simple orchiectomy for epididymal abscess; the other responded to treatment with antibiotics. Since the occurrence of these two cases, we routinely perform bilateral vasectomy prior to prostate cryoablation. We suggest that an extended course of prophylactic antibiotics may also be needed in order to avoid this complication.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of severe visual impairment and blindness in infancy. Transscleral cryotherapy has been shown to be effective in arresting the progression of ROP into the sight-threatening fibrovascular stages of the disease. It is currently recommended that all eyes reaching 'threshold' ROP should be treated. If both eyes of an infant reach 'threshold', both eyes should be treated. For centers that handle a limited number of infants with ROP it is suggested that the cryotherapy should be done under general anesthesia.

Either transscleral cyclophotocoagulation with the contact neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser or cyclocryotherapy (CCT) was performed in rabbits to compare the efficacy of these procedures in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) as well as the histologic changes they induced. The difference in mean maximum reduction of IOP in the two groups was statistically insignificant, but the Nd:YAG laser irradiation, using 2.5 J, destroyed less tissue than the CCT.

A case with typical skin lesions of incontinentia pigmeti showed progressing retinal vascular abnormalities. So cryotherapy was done on avascular peripheral retina, and retinal vascular changes ceased. We propose that cryotherapy may be a good treatment method for progressing retinal vascular lesions of incontinentia pigmenti.

In 20 patients Semm cold coagulation was performed on the exocervix to determine the depth of tissue necrosis and destruction of glandular crypts. Cold coagulation at 120 degrees C for 30 seconds achieves a depth of destruction of at least 4 mm.
