A recovery-oriented curriculum for training the Community Navigation Specialists (CNSs) of the new Opening Doors to Recovery in Southeast Georgia program was developed, implemented, and preliminarily evaluated. This new mental health program provides mobile, community-based support services to individuals with serious mental illnesses and a history of psychiatric inpatient recidivism (and commonly past incarcerations and homelessness). Teams of CNSs include a licensed social worker, a family member of an individual with a serious mental illness, and a peer specialist with lived experience. In …

Student error patterns as a function of curriculum design: teaching fractions to remedial high school students and high school students with learning disabilities.

This study evaluated the relative effectiveness of a curriculum that incorporated three empirically derived principles of curriculum design with a basal approach in teaching basic fractions concepts to students with learning disabilities and other low performing students in high school remedial math classes. The components of effective mathematics instruction articulated by Good and Grouws (1979) were implemented in both conditions. Thus, the curriculum design variables were isolated by keeping all other aspects of instruction constant. Results indicated that, although both programs were reaso…

Training the Next Generation of Future Surgical Residents: A Scoping Review and Proposal for an Undergraduate Curriculum From the Italian Polispecialistic Society of Young Surgeons.

AIM: The transition from medical school to surgical residency is marked by a persistent gap between theoretical instruction and clinical readiness. In Italy, variability in training programs across centers creates persistent gaps in residents' medical education. Scientific societies are asked to identify current training gaps and define the core competencies required for effective surgical training. We propose an undergraduate curriculum to support last-year medical students in Italy. METHODS: A scoping review of the literature focusing on structured surgical curricula for undergraduate medic…

Case Study in Education: Improving Resident Didactic Training: A Longitudinal Analysis of a Flipped Classroom Curriculum on Normalized Foot and Ankle OITE Scores.

INTRODUCTION: Flipped classroom models, which use active, case-based discussion, have shown promise across graduate medical education. Previous literature demonstrates that transitioning to a flipped classroom model resulted in significant increases in overall Orthopaedic In-Training Examination (OITE) scores. This observational study retrospectively compares foot and ankle OITE scores for orthopaedic surgery residents before and after implementation of a flipped classroom curriculum. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed OITE scores for orthopaedic residents, comparing a lecture-based c…

"I see my body the way people see me": A qualitative study on the acceptability and cultural adaptation of the mind.body.voice curriculum for Latina youth.

Latina adolescents and emerging adults navigate conflicting appearance ideals, balancing the "Latina curvy ideal" with Eurocentric thinness standards that contribute to body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and emotional distress. Few culturally tailored interventions have been developed or evaluated specifically for Latina youth, particularly in ways that directly center their lived experiences and adaptation priorities. The mind.body.voice (m.b.v.) curriculum is a near-peer-led program integrating cognitive dissonance, contemplative practices, and community action to counter harmful appea…

AI as a differentiated cognitive partner in medical education: a comparative study of popular science versus research-based curriculum extensions in histology and embryology.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy of Popular Science (PS) and Research-Based (RS) curriculum extensions in a Histology and Embryology course, and explored how artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be designed as differentiated cognitive partners to support distinct pedagogical goals. METHODS: Two parallel first-year clinical medicine classes (N = 118) were non-randomly assigned to PS (n = 60) and RS (n = 58) arms. The PS group completed narrative, clinically connected tasks supported by the Intelligent Quiz Platform (IQP). The RS group undertook inquiry-driven literature analysis s…

Effectiveness of online mindfulness-based interventions based on the structured curriculum framework in improving mental health: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

With the rapid development of digital technology, online Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) are increasingly being used in the mental health field. There is a lack of systematic quantitative synthesis of the effectiveness of online MBIs with a structured curriculum framework. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the overall impact of online MBIs based on the structured curriculum framework in improving mental health. This study performed a random effects meta-analysis of 38 RCTs. Analysis shows, significant effect sizes were found for symptoms of anxiety (Ncomp = 25, N = 3890, SMD = -0.44, …

A train-the-trainer curriculum to scale up artificial intelligence-supported echocardiography for rheumatic heart disease screening in a public health care system.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to test a train-the-trainer model for scaling up echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease (RHD). METHODS: This was a two-phased, prospective, pilot cohort study conducted in Lira, Uganda. In phase one, four nurse centres underwent a three-day training on echocardiographic screening for RHD. Thereafter, nurses integrated screening of patients aged 5-40 years into their routine clinic workflow. Echocardiograms were uploaded to a cloud-based server for review by an expert, who served as the gold standard for interpretation. In phase two, 12 nurses were

An evaluation of knowledge of circular economy among Therapeutic Radiographers/Radiation Therapists (TR/RTTs): Results of a European survey to inform curriculum design.

INTRODUCTION: Global warming and the increase in greenhouse gases are a current concern worldwide. The healthcare sector constitutes about 4.4% of all emissions. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge, awareness and attitudes of Therapeutic Radiographers/Radiation Therapists (TR/RTTs) regarding environment-related concepts to inform the development of educational curriculum. METHODS: A validated self-designed survey was distributed to TR/RTTs across Europe by the SAFE EUROPE partners and via social media between October 2021 and February 2022.
