BACKGROUND: There are no approved medications for juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM), a disorder that is often under-diagnosed. The effects of milnacipran, a drug approved for the management of fibromyalgia (FM) in adults, was assessed in a clinical trial program for JFM.

Seventy-five years ago, a 7-year-old girl underwent the first successful ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus. This procedure transformed her health and was a milestone in the development of cardiac surgery. The operation was performed by Dr. Robert E. Gross, then the surgical chief resident at Boston Children's Hospital, who went on to have a distinguished career in pediatric surgery. The patient is now a great-grandmother and the oldest known survivor of cardiac surgery.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND Topical immunotherapy with diphencyprone (DPCP) is considered the most effective treatment of alopecia areata (AA).
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of DPCP in the treatment of extensive or long-lasting AA in Greek patients.
METHODS: Sixty-four patients with extensive and/or long-lasting AA were sensitized with 2% diphencyprone. During each weekly subsequent visit, patients were treated with gradually denser concentrations adjusted in order to maintain erythema and itch on the patient's scalp for 48 h. Patients' hair re-growth was evaluated every 3 months for 2 years.

A new carbapenem antibiotic, imipenem/cilastatin sodium (MK-0787/MK-0791), was administered by intravenous drip infusion at a dose level of 500 mg/500 mg to 30 patients who underwent total abdominal hysterectomy for uterine myomas with or without benign ovarian tumors. Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies of imipenem/cilastatin sodium (MK-0787/MK-0791), a newly developed combined antibiotic in a 1:1 ratio, were performed in the field of pediatrics. The MK-0787/MK-0791 was administered to 15 children. Ten and 20 mg/kg doses of MK-0787 were administered by a intravenous drip infusion for 30 minutes to 3 children each. In the remaining 9 cases, MK-0787 doses of 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg were administered to 3 children each by a 1 hour intravenous drip infusion. Levels of MK-0787 and MK-0791 in plasma, urine and urinary recovery rate of the drugs were also determined.

Induction and maintenance of contact dermatitis of the scalp has proved effective in producing regrowth of hair in patients with alopecia areata. We observed regrowth of hair in 17 out of 20 patients after local application of the contact allergen, diphenylcyclopropenone. Only 3 patients were treated without success. In 3 patients regrowth of hair was also seen in areas that were not treated with diphenylcyclopropenone, suggesting that this treatment has an additional systemic effect. Patient acceptance of the induced dermatitis was excellent.

27 patients suffering from either extensive alopecia areata (n = 5) or alopecia totalis (n = 22) were treated topically with diphencyprone, a new potent contact allergen. The duration of treatment ranged from 4 to 17 months. Unilateral induction of hair growth after unilateral treatment was observed in 23 patients. A continuous response after continuous treatment has been observed so far in 18 of these patients. Thus, diphencyprone was found to be as effective as DNCB or squaric acid dibutylester in the treatment of alopecia areata. Unlike DNCB, diphencyprone is not mutagenic in the Ames test.
