A 28-year-old man with unilateral proptosis was found to have sclerosing dacryoadenitis and ectopic lacrimal gland tissue of the orbit. The unusual combination simulated invasive adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland both clinically and histopathologically. In a natural outbreak of sialodacryoadenitis virus it was observed that the incidence of clinical signs in spontaneous-hypertensive rats was 100%, and that these signs were of a severity not observed before in other strains of rats. An 11-year-old boy from Sierra Leone developed a mass in the left lacrimal gland a year after trauma to the left side of the brow. Biopsy of the mass led to the diagnosis of schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium, which had not been suspected previously. The initial occurrence in the orbit of such a rare, ectopic lesion in schistosomiasis and the possible relationship to previous trauma are features of special interest.

The affection is often undiagnosed at the first stage. The second stage is characterized by a chronic suppurative canaliculitis with intra-canalicular concretions involving in many cases the lower canaliculus. Our 6 cases have been treated by a posterior canaliculotomy, a microsurgical evacuation of the concretions and a lacrimal tubing. It is not a fungal infection but a bacterial disease due to Actinomyces. Surgical treatment is very effective.

Experimental autoimmune dacryoadenitis was produced in Lewis rats by immunization with a single intradermal administration of a 3M KCl extract of exorbital lacrimal gland in CFA, when enhanced by simultaneous i.v. injection of killed Bordetella pertussis.
