We describe a rare case of a gradually progressive hearing loss in a patient with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) syndrome successfully rehabilitated with a cochlear implant. The possible aetiology of the hearing loss in these cases is discussed.

A 59-year-old man had suffered from consciousness disturbance and right hemiplegia in December, 1996. He was diagnosed as left putaminal hemorrhage and his symptoms improved by conservative treatment. After one week since the onset, when he became alert, he noticed deafness. He was admitted in our hospital because of deafness and dysarthria in March, 2001. T 1-weighted MR image of the brain revealed bilateral putaminal hemorrhage and a low signal area in the white matter of right temporal lobe. Single photon emission computed tomography image revealed hypoperfusion in the bilateral temporal lo…

We report two patients with pure word deafness (PWD) with tumour in the III ventricle region with obstructive hydrocephalus. A diagnosis of PWD was made in these two patients in view of impaired verbal comprehension in the presence of adequate hearing, intact acoustic stapedius reflex and well preserved environmental sound perception. Return of verbal comprehension following the radiation therapy observed is probably due to the reduction of the tumour mass and the release of thalamocortical auditory pathways from its compressive effect. Our findings support the hypothesis of the presence of di…

We describe a case of genetic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) with deafness at the onset. We report clinical features, 14-3-3 protein positivity, electroencephalography and brain stem auditory evoked potential abnormalities, and high signal on magnetic resonance imaging in basal ganglia and temporal cortex. Similarities with CJD Heidenhain variant are discussed.

Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) is a form of diabetes associated with mutation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that occurs in 1% to 2% of individuals with diabetes. Understanding the clinical course and abnormalities in insulin secretion and action in affected individuals should allow better understanding of how this genetic defect alter glucose metabolism. We report the clinical course of three individuals with mtDNA mutations and deafness. Subjects no. 1 and 2 had diabetes not yet requiring insulin therapy, and subject no. 3, the son of subject no. 2, had normal glucose tolera…

The deafness mouse has profound sensorineural hearing loss with degeneration of hair cells soon after birth. The mode of inheritance is recessive, and there are no associated phenotypic anomalies. Thus, this mouse provides a model for recessive, non-syndromic, prelingual deafness. We have mapped the gene causing deafness in the mouse to Chromosome (Chr) 19 by analysis of 230 intersubspecific backcross progeny. No recombinants were found with the microsatellite marker D19Mit14. The loci for two guanine nucleotide-binding proteins are tightly linked to this marker, and they are being investigate…

Progressive conductive deafness may be caused by otosclerosis, a bone fixation of the stapes that causes reduced transmission of sound from the eardrum to the inner ear. Since the late 1950s, stapes surgery has been considered the treatment of choice for alleviating hearing loss due to otosclerosis. Over the past 20 years, there has been a decline in the number of stapes operations done. As a result, there are concerns regarding results of the stapes surgery done today compared with the results of such surgery when it was done more frequently. In this paper, I retrospectively review 603 stapes…

A case of Coffin-Lowry syndrome is described. The child had the typical face and also soft and puffy hands with tapering fingers. His psychomotor development was retarded. Audiological tests revealed profound hearing impairment. Anomalous labyrinths were shown by CT scan of the temporal bones. It is inferred that deafness is one of the symptoms of this syndrome.

The authors described some details from the life of Beethoven, emphasizing his problem linked with his progressive deafness. The etiology of the deafness is not known. The authors discussed their own hypothesis of "music language".

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is rarely seen in Britain. We report a case of TBE in a 44-year-old Swedish woman presenting to an accident and emergency department in London. The clinical features of the case, while in many ways typical, were nonspecific and led to difficulty in early diagnosis. The course of the illness was complicated by monoplegia and evidence of bulbar involvement with sensorineural deafness. The last is a very rare manifestation of TBE. With increasing foreign travel, TBE is likely to present more commonly in the U.K. and should be considered in any case of febrile illness…

The authors summarize the results of a follow-up study (clinico-electrophysiological) of the S. family living in the Namangan region of the Uzbek SSR. The familial anamnesis data provide evidence in favour of a probable autosomal recessive type of inheritance. A combination of the disease signs has been defined: spasticity, deafness, ataxia and speech disorders. To specify the problem of the given syndrome nosology, further studies into gene mapping are required.

In the vast majority of cases, conduction deafness is due to a lesion of the eardrum-ossicles system located in the middle ear. The diagnosis, relatively easy, rests on the results of acoumetry (performed with a tuning-fork), audiometry and acoustic impedance measurement. The causes of conduction deafness are multiple and can be divided into 5 categories: major or minor malformations, injuries, tumours, otospongiosis and chronic otitis media. The last two named are the most frequent and must be considered first. Otospongiosis is the most common cause of conduction deafness with healthy typanic…

We report a patient with a subconjunctival mass lesion caused by a larva of Spirometra sp. The parasite, 44 cm long and 1.0 mm wide, was removed intact and alive with complete preservation of the patient's vision. The mode of infection was probably through consumption of contaminated drinking water.

A 3 year survey at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital was conducted to determine causes of childhood deafness in children seen for that condition. Of the many factors causing this handicap, measles, seizures, and meningitis were identified most frequently. Due to poor medical facilities and widespread malnutrition, communicable diseases in children produce high rates of morbidity and mortality. As a result, a high percentage of infants acquire disabilities, including profound deafness. Improvement of the health care delivery system, breastfeeding, and compulsory immunization of all ba…

Two English Setter littermates (male and female) were evaluated for hearing difficulties at 4, 16, and 24 months of age. Auditory function was evaluated by behavioral response to pure-tone sounds, tympanometry, brain stem auditory evoked response, and acoustic reflex testing. Hereditary sensorineural deafness was diagnosed in both dogs. The extent of the hearing deficit, as characterized by these tests, was slightly different between the dogs, as well as between the ears in 1 dog.

A case of head injury is reported because it presented such an unusual symptom as sudden, bilateral complete deafness. An 11-year-old boy was involved in a traffic accident while riding on a bicycle. He was admitted immediately after the accident in semicomatose state. The pupils were isocoric and pupillary light reflex was normal. Conjugate deviation to the right was seen. Oculo-cephalic response was absent. X-rays of his skull showed two linear fractures in the occipital bone. CT scan of the head showed symmetrical ventricular dilatation which was suspected to be a sequela of asphyxia at his…
