Bodyweight and serum copper concentrations of farmed red deer stags following oral copper oxide wire administration.

A diagnosis of secondary copper deficiency was established on a deer farm with a peat soil type, on the basis of confirmed enzootic ataxia in hinds, liver and serum copper concentrations and pasture and soil element analyses. Seventy-four weaner stags were selected for a trial to investigate a growth response to copper supplementation. Thirty-seven red and red x wapiti type stags were treated with 4g copper oxide wire particles at four months of age (April). A further 8g copper oxide wire was given in June. Thirty-seven untreated animals acted as controls. Bodyweights were measured on five occ…

Comparison of the detection of the chronic wasting disease prion by real-time quaking-induced conversion (rtQuIC) and silica nanoparticle-rtQuIC (nano-rtQuIC) assays in retropharyngeal lymph nodes of white-tailed deer, mule deer, and Rocky Mountain elk.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) continues to be detected across the United States and globally; enhanced detection is critical for disease management. Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have shown promise in reducing time-to-detection for the real-time quaking-induced conversion (rtQuIC) assay in white-tailed deer (WTD) retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RPLNs). We aimed to document such decreased time-to-detection in 3 Wyoming, USA, cervid species. Additionally, we investigated maximum slope (max slope) as a metric of differentiating CWD status by rtQuIC testing, and how the receiver operating characterist…

Occurrence and preliminary molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. in wild Korean roe deer from Jeju Island, Korea.

Sarcocystis spp. are common protozoan parasites infecting a wide range of intermediate hosts, including wild cervids. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and molecular characteristics of Sarcocystis infection in wild Korean roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus) from Jeju Island, Korea. Sarcocysts were identified in the heart and skeletal muscle of 18 out of 40 examined animals (45.0%) based on histopathological examination. The cysts were oval to spherical in shape, measuring 42.41-340.29 μm in length and 31.62-129.76 μm in width, and were not associated with significant inflam…

Deciphering the Link Between Gut Bacterial Community Structure of Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii) and Musk Traits.

Musk, a precious traditional Chinese medicine, is secreted by the male forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii). The gut microbiota plays an essential role in host metabolism, yet its relationship with musk traits remains poorly understood. Here, 16S rRNA sequencing of 89 fecal samples was integrated with musk quality (color and moisture) and yield data to investigate how fecal bacterial communities influence these traits. Distinct microbial consortia were associated with musk traits. Aromatic and sulfur-metabolizing taxa (norank_f_Actinomycetaceae, Nocardioides, Rhodococcus, and Mailhella) were…

Pulmonary echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus canadensis G8 in a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Pennsylvania, USA, 2026.

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by the two zoonotic cestodes Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus canadensis, is emerging in new regions of the United States and Canada. In January 2026, an adult female hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Pennsylvania, USA exhibited pulmonary hydatid cysts. Morphologic identification of metacestodes in cystic fluid and subsequent PCR and sequencing confirmed this deer was infected with Echinococcus canadensis G8. Although E. canadensis commonly infects cervids at northern latitudes, recent infections in definitive wild canid host…

Detection of chronic wasting disease prions in soil at an illegal white-tailed deer carcass disposal site.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious prion disorder affecting cervids such as deer, elk, caribou, and moose, causing progressive and severe neurological degeneration followed by eventual death. As CWD prions (PrPSc) accumulate in the body, they are shed through excreta and secreta, as well as through decomposing carcasses. Prions can persist in the environment for years, posing significant concerns for ongoing transmission to susceptible cervids and pose an unknown risk to sympatric species. We used a validated protocol for real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) in vitro prion…

Comparison of Butorphanol-Azaperone-Medetomidine and Nalbuphine-Medetomidine-Azaperone for Immobilization of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

Butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM) is commonly used for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) immobilization in captive and free-ranging populations. It is a federally regulated controlled substance requiring stringent regulatory compliance, complicating field application. A prescription-only drug combination, nalbuphine-medetomidine-azaperone® (NalMed-A) provides a less-regulated alternative for use by wildlife professionals. Efficacy and safety of these drug combinations for immobilization of deer have not been compared in a controlled trial, and reports of dose-specific effects o…

Development of a Deer Tick Virus Infection Model in C3H/HeJ Mice to Mimic Human Clinical Outcomes.

Deer tick virus (DTV) is a Tick-Borne Orthoflavivirus endemic to the United States, transmitted to humans through bites from the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis, which is also the primary vector of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., the causative agent of Lyme disease. Human infection with DTV can result in acute febrile illness followed by central nervous system complications, such as encephalitis and meningoencephalitis. Currently, there are mouse models established for investigating the pathogenesis and clinical outcomes of DTV that mimic human infections, but the strains of mice utilized are refracto…

Genetic diversity of Blastocystis subtypes in the Alpine musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) in Gansu province, northwestern China.

Blastocystis sp. is a gastrointestinal pathogen that is frequently found in humans and animals worldwide. In this study, 201 fecal samples were collected from captive Alpine musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) at three farms in Gansu province. Blastocystis was detected and subtyped by amplifying and sequencing the small subunit ribosomal DNA gene. The overall prevalence of Blastocystis was 39.8% (80/201). Five known Blastocystis subtypes (STs), including ST1 (n = 1), ST4 (n = 12), ST10 (n = 50), ST14 (n = 6), and ST24 (n = 11) were identified using subtyping and evolutionary analysis. ST10 was th…

Progression of chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer analyzed by serial biopsy RT-QuIC and immunohistochemistry.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) continues to spread or be recognized in the United States, Canada, and Europe. CWD is diagnosed by demonstrati … induced conversion (RT-QuIC) and IHC on serial biopsies of mucosal lymphoid tissues of white-tailed deer orally exposed to low doses of CWD prions. We report that detection of CWD infection by RT-QuIC preceded that by IHC in both tonsil and recto-anal lymphoid tissue (RAMALT) in 14 of 19 deer (74%). Of the 322 biopsy samples collected in post-exposure …

Northern and southern blacklegged (deer) ticks are genetically distinct with different histories and Lyme spirochete infection rates.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the archetypal emerging zoonosis and is dependent on transmission by ticks in the genus Ixodes. Understanding the origin, maintenance, and spread of these ticks contributes much to our understanding of the spread of LB and other disease agents borne by these ticks. We collected 1232 Ixodes scapularis ticks from 17 east coast sites ranging from New Hampshire to Florida and used mtDNA, three nuclear genetic loci, and incorporated Bayesian analyses to resolve geographically distinct tick populations and compare their demographic histories. A sparse, stable, and geneticall

Identification of potential therapeutic targets of deer antler extract on bone regulation based on serum proteomic analysis.

Traditional Chinese medicine has been proven to be effective in treating human diseases according to a long-term observation for more than 2000 years. However, the precise molecular mechanisms of a majority of the medications are still largely unknown. Deer antler has been clinically used as an effective animal medication in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries. Previous studies have demonstrated that antler extracts play crucial roles in promoting bone and cartilage development, growth and repair. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. In the present …

Immunization with a synthetic peptide vaccine fails to protect mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from chronic wasting disease.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) adversely affects both wild and captive cervid populations. A vaccine to prevent CWD would be a highly desirable tool to aid in disease management. To this end, we tested in mule deer a combination of CWD vaccines consisting of cervid prion peptide sequences 168-VDQYNNQNTFVHDC-182 and 145-NDYEDRYYRENMYRYPNQ-164 that had previously been shown to delay onset of clinical disease and increase survival in a mouse-adapted scrapie model. Thirteen captive mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were divided into vaccine (n=7) and control groups (n=6), and given prime and boost va…
