Position and Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Canines in Cases of Maxillary Lateral Incisor Agenesis in Mixed Dentition.

OBJECTIVE: Assess whether the permanent maxillary canine (MC) has a natural tendency to erupt mesially in children with maxillary lateral incisors agenesis (MLIA), compared to children without agenesis. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study consisted of children between 5 and 12 years old divided into three groups: the first group with unilateral MLIA, in which an intraindividual analysis was performed, the second group presented bilateral MLIA, and the third group with patients without agenesis. These last two groups were matched for comparison interindividua

Complications and Clinical Considerations of the Implant-Retained Zirconia Complete-Arch Prosthesis with Various Opposing Dentitions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of the implant-retained zirconia complete-arch prosthesis with various opposing dentitions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 40 patients included in this retrospective case series study were treated with one or two implant-retained zirconia complete-arch prostheses (ZIRCAP) using the Zirkonzahn protocol. Prettau zirconia frames were created with strategic cutbacks in the structure to extend zirconia incisal coverage of the esthetic anterior sextants and complete monolithic zirconia in the molar areas; subsequent layers of porcelain were applied to nonfunctional …

An Interdisciplinary Approach in Rehabilitation of an Adult Mutilated Dentition with Multiple Missing Permanent Teeth--A Case Report.

Adult orthodontics has been an area of increasing focus in recent times. Comprehensive treatment of adults is more challenging due to a myriad of problems that coexist in an adult that makes treatment planning more challenging. A large number of individuals seek dental care because of aesthetic reasons, that is, the desire to look more attractive by improving their smiles. The role an attractive smile plays on a person's self-image and confidence cannot be overemphasized. Evaluating and treating patients for the purpose of smile design often involves a multi-discipline approach. Achieving an i

Distal movement of the mandibular dentition with temporary skeletal anchorage devices to correct a Class III malocclusion.

This case report describes the treatment of an 18-year-old man with a skeletal Class III pattern and a full-step Class III malocclusion. The orthodontic treatment included distal movement of the mandibular dentition with temporary skeletal anchorage devices. The total active treatment time was 30 months. His occlusion and facial appearance were significantly improved by the orthodontic treatment. Posttreatment records 2 years later showed excellent results with good occlusion and facial balance.

Orthodontic intervention in the early mixed dentition: a prospective, controlled study on the effects of the eruption guidance appliance.

INTRODUCTION: A prospective, controlled cohort study was started in 1998 to investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment in the early mixed dentition with the eruption guidance appliance. METHODS: Occlusal changes were recorded in 167 treated children and 104 controls after they had reached the middle mixed-dentition stage. Treatment began when the first deciduous incisor was exfoliated (T1) and ended when all permanent incisors and first molars were fully erupted (T2). The children's mean ages were 5.1 years (SD 0.5) at T1 and 8.4 years (SD 0.5) at T2. RESULTS: From T1 to T2, overjet in…

A possible association between early apical resorption of primary teeth and ectodermal characteristics of the permanent dentition.

The hypothesis of this study is that children with unexpected early apical resorption of the primary teeth are also predisposed to resorption in the permanent dentition. Accordingly, the aim was to perform a longitudinal study focussing on the permanent teeth in children with unexpected early apical resorption in the primary dentition. Panoramic radiographs of 12 children (7 boys and 5 girls) aged 6 years 4 months to 8 years 9 months with unexpected early apical resorption of primary teeth were identified from a dental archive of 588 patients. After written request, follow-up radiographs were …

Management of a multiple dentoalveolar trauma in permanent dentition with avulsion of a canine: a 4-year follow-up.

Traumatic dental injuries are relatively frequent accidents that typically involve teeth in the maxillary anterior segment. The emergency treatment and the clinical decisions must be efficiently made at the time of injury, and there is a need for long-term follow-up because of the high incidence of complications. The aim of this article was to present the emergency and rehabilitation treatments of a multiple dentoalveolar trauma in the permanent dentition involving different extensions of enamel-dentin crown fracture, pulp exposure, and the avulsion of a canine. The treatment outcomes are repo…

The prevalence of malocclusal traits and their correlations in mixed dentition children: results from the Italian OHSAR Survey.

PURPOSE: To know the prevalence of malocclusal traits and their correlation in Italian mixed dentition children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 1,198 children 7 to 11 years old, who had never undergone orthodontic treatment, were included in the Italian Oral Health of Schoolchildren of the Abruzzo Region (OHSAR) Survey. Canine and molar classes, overbite, overjet, dental crowding, maxillary midline diastema, crossbite and scissorbite were recorded. The canine and molar classes were considered as dependent variables, and their separate correlations with all of the other occlusal traits wer…

Epidemiology of Hoffmeister's "genetically determined predisposition to disturbed development of the dentition" in patients with cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVE: Type and prevalence rates of the symptoms of Hoffmeister's "genetically determined predisposition to disturbed development of the dentition" were studied in patients with clefts. PATIENTS: Data of 263 patients with nonsyndromic clefts of lip (alveolus and palate) or isolated cleft palates were examined in a retrospective study. SETTING: The clefts were classified as cleft lip or cleft lip and alveolus, cleft palate, unilateral cleft lip and palate, and bilateral cleft lip and palate. All patients were scrutinized for 28 individual symptoms. Prevalences of the individual symptoms w…

Changes in tooth size-arch length relationships from the deciduous to the permanent dentition: a longitudinal study.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the changes in the maxillary and mandibular tooth size-arch length relationship (TSALD) after the complete eruption of the deciduous dentition (mean age = 4.0 years) to the time of eruption of the second molars (mean age = 13.3 years). In addition, an attempt was made to determine whether TSALD in the permanent dentition can be predicted in the deciduous dentition. Records on 35 male and 27 female subjects were evaluated. Each subject had a clinically acceptable occlusion--that is, a normal molar and canine relationship, at the time of eruption…

Effects of removing inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on mandibular growth and the eruption of permanent dentition in puppies.

Investigation was performed on the effects of removing the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on the permanent dentition and mandibular growth. Five puppies with erupted deciduous teeth had the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures removed unilaterally. When the test animals were 28 weeks old, examination revealed that the deciduous teeth on the side operated had exfoliated but permanent teeth did not replace them. On the other hand, the permanent teeth on the side not operated on replaced the exfoliated deciduous teeth. After a second period of 28 weeks, the germs of the permanen…

The effects of variations in the opposing dentition on changes in the partially edentulous mandible. Part II. Densitometric measurements.

Distal-extension lower removable partial dentures were used to study the effects of various types of opposing dentitions on the residual mandibular ridge. The opposing-dentition groups included complete upper dentures, removable partial upper dentures, and natural teeth. Changes in the bone of the lower residual ridge were measured by means of densitometry. A significant densitometric difference was found in the bone of the partially edentulous mandible between the group of subjects wearing complete upper dentures and the group with natural upper teeth. The reason for this difference is uncert…

Clinical efficacy of combined orthodontic and implant-supported prosthodontic treatment for dentition defects with dentofacial deformities.

This study aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes associated with orthodontic treatment combined with implant-supported prosthodontic restoration in patients with dentition defects accompanied by dentofacial deformities. This retrospective study included 104 patients treated between September 2019 and September 2024. Patients were assigned to a control group (n = 53), who received implant-supported prosthodontic restoration alone, or an observation group (n = 51), who underwent orthodontic treatment prior to implant placement. Baseline characteristics, including age, sex, bone density, and per…

Longitudinal Changes in Occlusal Outcomes and Case Complexity with Invisalign® First in Early Mixed Dentition.

Background: Interceptive orthodontic treatment during mixed dentition aims to reduce malocclusion complexity and improve occlusal development. Although Invisalign® First was introduced for Phase I therapy in growing patients, evidence regarding longitudinal occlusal outcomes and maintenance during dental development remains limited. This study described longitudinal changes in occlusal outcomes and case complexity using standardized indices in moderate-to-severe malocclusions. Methods: Records of children in early mixed dentition treated with Invisalign® First between 2019 and 2025 were retros…
