BACKGROUND: Preservatives present in cosmetics and other industrial products can cause allergic contact dermatitis. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of allergy to selected preservatives in consecutive patients examined due to contact dermatitis in the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, and to establish whether individuals sensitized to formaldehyde react simultaneously to formaldehyde releasers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 405 patients (308 females and 97 males) was examined in 2011-2013. In all participants patch tests with a series of 13 preservatives (para

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) is a preservative used in both cosmetic and industrial settings. In Europe it is allowed to be used in rinse-off cosmetics only because of its propensity to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). No such legislation exists in Australia. In recent years MI without MCI has been used. In August 2010 the first cases of MI causing non-occupational ACD were reported in Europe. The objective here was to present a case series of ACD to MI occurring in the Australian setting.
METHODS: : We retrospectively reviewed posi

Occupational Dermatosis is described as any alteration in the skin, mucosa or annexes that is directly or indirectly caused, conditioned, maintained or aggravated by agents present in the occupational activity or work environment. The authors of the present study describe the importance of the topic and the epidemiology and etiopathogeny of the main forms of occupational dermatoses: allergic and irritative contact dermatitis, phytodermatitis, acne (elaioconioses and chloracne), keratosis, cancers, foreign body granuloma, infections, onychias, and ulcerations. Clinical findings of occupational

Of 22 workers in a ski factory, occupational allergic contact dermatitis was found in 8. 6 were sensitive to epoxy resin compounds, i.e., epoxy resins, hardeners or diluents, 1 to cobalt in glass-fiber reinforcements, and 1 to formaldehyde in a urea-formaldehyde glue and a lacquer. 4 workers had irritant contact dermatitis from epoxy resin compounds, lacquers, sanding dust, or glass-fiber dust. 3 had contact allergy from a new sensitizer, diethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether, in a reactive diluent. Immediate transfer of workers sensitized to epoxy resin from epoxy exposure prevents aggravation of

A general review is given of airborne-induced contact dermatoses, particularly of the irritant and allergenic types. Because the reports in the literature often omit the term airborne, 12 volumes of Contact Dermatitis (January 1975-July 1985) were screened, and the cases cited were classified in function of the anamnesis, lesion locations, causative irritants and allergens, and other factors. The present article also discusses differential diagnoses, in particular with regard to contact dermatitis of the face, ears, and neck. Finally, seven case reports of occupational and nonoccupational cont

Propolis has been used since ancient times in folk medicine for its alleged beneficial effects. It is a potent sensitizer and is well recognized as a cause of occupational allergic eczematous contact dermatitis in apiarists. Recently, there has been an increase in allergic eczematous contact dermatitis because of nonoccupational exposure to propolis in "natural products" and biocosmetics. This report describes a patient who had acute oral mucositis with ulceration as a result of using propolis-containing lozenges.

Naphthol AS, a coupling agent in cotton dyeing, caused allergic contact dermatitis in 5 patients, sensitized from wearing a special kind of shirt. Patch tests with Naphthol AS and pieces of shirt were positive in all 5 patients. Analysis of 1 of the shirts revealed the presence of Naphthol AS. 1 patient with hand dermatitis and positive patch tests to Naphthol AS and nickel was a needlewoman, probably sensitized to Naphthol AS from occupational contact with clothes.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a leading cause of occupational skin disease, with nickel(II) sulphate representing one of the most prevalent contact allergies worldwide. Clinically, nickel-induced dermatitis is characterised by pronounced inflammation and intense pruritus. The functional role of endogenous mediators, structural neuronal changes, and molecular mediators contributing to the generation of itch in allergic contact dermatitis still needs to be investigated. We present nickel(II) sulphate-induced contact dermatitis as a mechanistic model to investigate pruritus under controlled cond

AIMS: To identify workplace and individual risk factors for occupational contact allergy and dermatitis.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at an international company producing wind turbine systems in Denmark. A cohort of 724 production workers at four facilities was highly exposed to epoxy resin as well as other chemicals. A screening questionnaire (participation rate 84.7%) was followed by an interview by an occupational physician and a dermatological examination, including patch testing, for a comprehensive list of potential workplace sensitizers.
RESULTS: Clinically diagno

BACKGROUND: In the late 1980s, there were notable increases in reports of allergic reactions to natural rubber latex, or NRL, particularly in association with barium enema procedures and medical procedures performed on children with spina bifida. These reports also raised awareness of the growing concern about NRL allergy in both patients and health care workers.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DISORDER: This report by the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs summarizes the signs and symptoms of NRL protein allergy, allergic contact dermatitis and irritant dermatitis; offers informati

Occupational medicine is interested in effective prophylaxis of skin occupational diseases. Use of protective ointments and creams makes one of prophylaxis methods of professional dermatitis. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate both the primarily irritant and the allergic action of the two creams devised by us for protection of skin exposed to aqueous solution of electrolytes. One of these creams was composed of hydrocarbons components, the other had in addition silicone oil and cetaceum. Protective properties of these creams in patients with allergic contact dermatitis were also

BACKGROUND: Garlic is widely appreciated as a spice and as a vegetable as well as an over-the-counter phytotherapeutic. From a dermato-allergological standpoint, several garlic-related adverse reactions have to be distinguished.
OBJECTIVE: The corresponding literature is reviewed briefly, with regard to our present observation of a cook, who contracted garlic-induced contact dermatitis being analyzed for its complex pathomechanism.
METHODS: The patient showed a positive type-IV patch test reaction for diallyl disulfide, a low molecular weight garlic ingredient; and strong, non-irritant react

The occurrence of skin lesions in healthcare workers is associated with a negative impact on important skin functions, including protection from mechanical injuries, sunlight, dehydration, and penetration of chemical substances or pathogenic microorganisms. In healthcare professionals, the most common occupational skin disease is contact dermatitis (CD), either irritant (ICD) or allergic (ACD), and typically on the hands. ICD accounts for about 80% of occupational CD, making it the most frequent cause. According to the literature, CD frequency is higher among healthcare professionals than othe

The prevention of skin diseases is accepted as an important part of occupational dermatology. Irritant dermatitis in particular, is a skin disease which can be avoided by preventional measures. Hence, an early introduction of trainees to preventional measures seems to be necessary to avoid bad habits which then become a matter of routine. The role of the dermatologist is not only the identification of individuals with a higher risk for developing irritant dermatitis, he should also inform his patients about the relevant irritants in their occupation (or of irritants in the household or leisure

Allergic contact dermatitis is one of the most frequent occupational skin diseases. Targeted allergen avoidance can only be achieved by identification of the causative allergen. Therefore, patch testing is of utmost importance in occupational dermatology, not only in terms of assessing causal relationships but also regarding the implementation of prevention measures and evaluation of the legal criteria for an occupational skin disease in Germany (statutory occupational disease BK 5101). The lack of commercial patch test preparations poses a great diagnostic challenge. Patch testing of patient'

Repeated exposure to the marine bryozoan, Alcyonidium gelatinosum, frequently provokes an eczematous allergic contact dermatitis known as the "Dogger Bank Itch". The dermatitis, representing a severe occupational disease, is especially widely distributed among trawlermen working in the Dogger Bank area in the North Sea. The allergy is shown to belong to the type of cell-mediated hypersensitivity. The hapten has been identified as the (2-hydroxyethyl)dimethylsulfoxonium ion. The isolation, structure determination and synthesis are discussed.

Occupational hand eczema is frequent in metalworkers. The contribution of metal allergies is poorly elucidated even though such exposures are common at the workplace. To estimate the prevalence of metal allergy to cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) in metalworkers and compare these to estimates from the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA). Two authors independently searched PubMed for studies reporting on the prevalence of metal allergy in metalworkers. Proportion meta-analyses were performed to calculate the pooled proportions of metal allergy in metalworkers. In
