Leiner's disease associated with diminished third component of complement.

A 6-week-old female infant experienced recurrent diarrhea, wasting, and generalized seborrheic dermatitis. She manifested defective yeast opsonization and concomitant very low level of the third component of complement (C3). This is the first report of Leiner's disease associated with diminished C3. It corroborates evidence to suggest that yeast opsonic activity of normal human serum is dependent on C3 levels.

Impact of Ketogenic and Low-Glycemic Diets on Inflammatory Skin Conditions.

Diet plays an emerging role in dermatologic therapy. The ketogenic and low-glycemic diets have potential anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects, making them attractive for treating inflammatory skin conditions. We provide an overview of the current evidence on the effects of ketogenic and low-glycemic diets on inflammatory skin conditions including acne, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis (SD), atopic dermatitis (AD), and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). We conclude that low-glycemic diets show promise for treating acne, while the evidence for ketogenic diets in treating other inflammatory skin c

Contact allergy to isothiazolinone derivatives: unusual clinical presentations.

Contact allergic reactions to the mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one are most frequently associated with intolerance to cosmetics. The present article points out that such reactions, particularly on the face, can have unusual clinical presentations that are very similar to seborrheic eczema, lupus erythematosus, lymphocytic infiltrate or photodermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is also often erroneously suspected.

Off-Label Use of Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors in Dermatologic Disorders.

Off-label prescribing is a common practice in dermatology, particularly when uncommon dermatologic diseases have limited or no approved treatment options. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are approved for the treatment of eczema, and their anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and steroid-sparing effects make them an attractive therapeutic option for a wide variety of other dermatologic diseases. This review summarizes and qualifies the available evidence supporting the clinical effectiveness of tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream in non-eczema indications. There is high-quality evidence s

Narrow-band UV-B phototherapy: an effective and reliable treatment alternative for extensive and recurrent pityriasis versicolor.

PURPOSE: In the previous studies, positive effect of sunlight on seborrheic dermatitis may well be explained by the direct influence of UV-light on the yeasts. Narrow-band ultraviolet-B phototherapy appears to be a very effective and safe treatment option for patients with severe seborrheic dermatitis. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of narrow-band ultraviolet-B phototherapy as an alternative treatment for pityriasis versicolor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 38 patients diagnosed with disseminated pityriasis versicolor having more than four relapsing episodes within 12 months were tre

Diseases from the Spectrum of Dermatitis and Eczema: Can "Omics" Sciences Help with Better Systematics and More Accurate Differential Diagnosis?

Researchers active in the field of inflammatory skin diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema are well aware of a considerable overlap in the clinical pictures and proposed sets of diagnostic criteria for these diseases, which can hardly be overcome through the clinical or epidemiological research. In effect, patients are included in studies based on vague and overlapping criteria, while heterogeneous study populations may, in turn, lead to non-representative outcomes and continued confusion. In this narrative review, a systematics of diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and ecz

Itchy and Swollen: Atopic Dermatitis With Cephalocervical Lymphadenitis in an Infant.

We present a case of a three-month-old Hispanic female seen in the clinic for atopic dermatitis (AD) along with a rare incidence of associated cephalocervical lymphadenitis. The patient had a three-month history of redness, irritation, inflammation, and pruritus of the scalp, face, torso, and lymph nodes. The history and examination originally indicated seborrheic dermatitis with AD, impetigo, and folliculitis on the differential. Due to the rarity of this presentation, it is crucial to increase clinical recognition and awareness of this combination among physicians to improve patient outcomes

COVID-19 pandemic and the skin: what should dermatologists know?

The world has changed dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic began. In addition to our social, occupational, and personal lives, the new coronavirus also poses novel challenges for all physicians, including dermatologists. Several skin conditions have emerged, mainly as a result of prolonged contact with personal protective equipment and excessive personal hygiene. Pressure injury, contact dermatitis, itch, pressure urticaria, and exacerbation of preexisting skin diseases, including seborrheic dermatitis and acne, have been described. We have focused on the dermatologic aspects of the COVID-

Impact of seasonality on conducting clinical studies in dermatology.

It is generally accepted among dermatologists that certain skin diseases are subject to seasonal influence. This belief, however, is based primarily on anecdotal observation rather than fact-based evidence. To address this controversy, we performed a retrospective analysis of a total of 3931 subjects enrolled in 7 phase 3 clinical trials across the diseases acne, atopic dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis and found a seasonal effect to exist in the treatment response of the 3 very common dermatologic diseases studied. To be truly representative of a drug's benefit when the disease is known t
