Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by mutation in the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene. SDS has a variety of clinical features, including exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and hematological dysfunction. Neutropenia is the most common symptom in patients with SDS. SDS is also associated with an elevated risk of developing myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia. BACKGROUND: Rotary cutting instruments (RCIs) are sterilized routinely. The authors aimed to analyze the structural integrity, presence of dirt, and microbial contamination of RCIs used in clinical practice after processing.

The small volume of the infant abdomen limits the application of laparoscopic procedures. We successfully repaired a duodenal atresia in a 2-kg female infant using a standard diamond-shaped anastomosis and intracorporeal suturing and knot-tying techniques. Anesthesia and positive pressure ventilation assured adequate gas exchange during pneumoperitoneum during the procedure.

Caesarean section was performed under spinal anaesthesia in 55 women using a 25-gauge diamond-tipped needle and in a further 55 mothers with a 24-gauge Sprotte needle. Eight patients (14.5%) developed a headache in the former group, five of whom required a blood patch. There were no headaches reported in the Sprotte group.
