A systematic review of weight loss, physical activity and dietary interventions involving African American men.

When compared with men of other racial or ethnic groups, African American men are more likely to experience adverse health conditions. The systematic review objectives were to (i) determine the current evidence base concerning African American men's response to lifestyle behavioural interventions designed to promote weight loss, increase physical activity, and/or improve healthy eating and (ii) determine the next steps for research in these areas. The PubMed, Web of Science, Psych Info and Cochrane databases were searched to identify papers published before January 1, 2013 that reported change

The role of affect in the maintenance of anorexia nervosa: evidence from a naturalistic assessment of momentary behaviors and emotion.

The current study examines the relationship of affect and eating disorder behavior in anorexia nervosa (AN) using ecological momentary assessment. Participants were 118 adult females recruited at three sites from eating disorder treatment centers and community advertisements. All participants met full Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (4th ed.) criteria or subthreshold criteria for AN. Participants were provided handheld computers and asked to report positive affect, negative affect, loss of control (LOC) eating, purging, exercise, drinking fluids to curb appetite, and weig

The acquired preparedness model of risk for bulimic symptom development.

The authors applied person-environment transaction theory to test the acquired preparedness model of eating disorder risk. The model holds that (a) middle-school girls high in the trait of ineffectiveness are differentially prepared to acquire high-risk expectancies for reinforcement from dieting or thinness; (b) those expectancies predict subsequent binge eating and purging; and (c) the influence of the disposition of ineffectiveness on binge eating and purging is mediated by dieting or thinness expectancies. In a three-wave longitudinal study of 394 middle-school girls, the authors found sup

Physician advice about being overweight: association with self-reported weight loss, dietary, and physical activity behaviors of US adolescents in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2002.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to examine the association of physician counseling about being overweight with attempted weight loss, dietary, and physical activity/inactivity behaviors of US teens. METHODS: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 1999-2000 and 2001-2002 for 16- to 19-year-old subjects with BMI for age of > or = 85th percentile (n = 716). Regression methods were used to examine the association of physician advice about teen weight status with covariate-adjusted differences in reported weight loss, dietary, and physical activity behaviors. RESULTS: App

State of the science: VLED (Very Low Energy Diet) for obesity.

It is often stated, "the faster you lose weight, the faster it is regained ". A review of existing literature does not support such a statement--indeed if anything the reverse is true. The origins of this erroneous view are the misconceptions that weight regain is a simple matter of bad dietary and social habits and that it takes time to change these, that physiological adaptations to rapid weight loss are different to those of gradual weight loss and that weight regain is simply due to a return to old habits. Indeed there are many advantages to rapid weight loss achieved with the use of a mod

[Weight gain during treatment with antipsychotics: clinical relevance, pathophysiology, and therapeutical strategies].

The clinical relevance of drug-induced weight changes is due to the development of obesity, increased rates of morbidity and reduced treatment compliance, even if the psychopharmacological treatment is effective. Possible underlying causes of weight gain in patients treated with antipsychotic drugs are the psychiatric disorder itself, and changes in the neurotransmitter, cytokine and hormone systems. Clinical management of psychopharmacologically induced weight gain includes diet, behavioral and pharmacological therapy. Possible add-on strategies - based on case reports and small studies - are

[Determination of fenfluramine, diethylpropion and mazindol in slimming foods by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry].

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analytical method for three anorectics drugs, fenfluramine, diethylpropion and mazindol, illegally adulterated in slimming foods has been developed. They can be simultaneously identified and quantified. The samples were extracted with chloroform, and then separated by GC with an HP-5MS GC capillary column. The temperature programming was started at 70 degrees C. The temperature was held at this temperature for 2 min and then increased at 10 degrees C/min to 280 degrees C. The completely separated peaks were identified by MS with a quadrupole mass

Dietary restriction does not protect the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway of older animals from low-dose MPTP-induced neurotoxicity.

To determine whether reduced caloric intake affects the susceptibility of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) neurons to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced neurotoxicity, 1-year-old male C57BL6 mice were offered food ad libitum or were given only 60% of the normal dietary intake. After 3 months, both groups were treated with low cumulative doses of 0, 10, 15, or 20 mg/kg MPTP. One week later, the striata were collected and DA, dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPAC), and norepinephrine (NE) were measured. Treatment with MPTP had no effect on striatal NE but produced a dose-related depl

Weight loss and growth velocity in obese children after very low calorie diet, exercise, and behavior modification.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of obesity in American youth is increasing and treatment of the condition is difficult. We have developed a multi-disciplinary weight reduction program that extends over 1 y and includes a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) followed by a hypocaloric diet, exercise, and behavior modification. Based on data collected at baseline, at the end of the acute intervention phase (10-20 wk), and at 1-y evaluation, we assessed the efficacy of this outpatient weight reduction program in treating obese children and adolescents in a follow-up of a series of cases. Furthermore, we examin

Chronic food restriction in rats augments the central rewarding effect of cocaine and the delta1 opioid agonist, DPDPE, but not the delta2 agonist, deltorphin-II.

RATIONALE: Chronic food restriction augments the self-administration and locomotor stimulating effects of opiates, psychostimulants and NMDA antagonists. The extent to which these effects can be attributed to changes in drug pharmacokinetics and bioavailability versus sensitivity of the neuronal circuits that mediate the affected behavioral functions, has not been established. Recent studies point to central adaptive changes insofar as rewarding, locomotor and c-fos-inducing effects of amphetamine and MK-801, injected directly into the lateral ventricle, are greater in food-restricted than ad

Mood and forbidden foods' influence on perceptions of binge eating.

This study consists of two experiments investigating the effects of induced mood and food type on perceptions of eating in imagined and real eating situations. A total of 212 female undergraduates representing the continuum of bulimic symptomatology were induced with either elated or depressed moods using a standardized mood-induction procedure. They were then either asked to imagine themselves in a situation with either forbidden or non-forbidden foods (Experiment 1) or else were presented with a buffet of forbidden or non-forbidden foods and asked to eat (Experiment 2). Participants subseque

Aggressive weight reduction treatment in the management of type 2 diabetes.

Most patients with Type 2 diabetes are significantly overweight, and diet-induced weight loss can provide marked improvement in their glycaemic control. As conventional therapy combining diet and exercise usually has a poor long-term success rate, more aggressive weight reduction programmes have been proposed for the treatment of severely obese diabetic patients, including very-low-calorie diets, anti-obesity drugs and bariatric surgery. Very-low-calorie diets usually have a remarkable short-term effect, and energy restriction and weight reduction are positive factors for the glycaemic control

The prevalence of high-level exercise in the eating disorders: etiological implications.

There is increasing evidence both from animal experimentation and from clinical field studies that physical activity can play a central role in the pathogenesis of some eating disorders. However, few studies have addressed the issue of prevalence or whether there are different rates of occurrence across diagnostic categories, and the estimates that do exist are not entirely satisfactory. The present study was designed to conduct a detailed examination of the physical activity history in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) both during and prior to the onset of their dis

Visual palatability of food in patients with eating disorders and dieting women.

The effects of 19 meals of different caloric content on slides on palatability and hypothetical duration of consumption were investigated in 7 patients with anorexia nervosa, 17 patients with bulimia nervosa at the beginning and after 8 weeks of hospital treatment. Nine healthy females served as controls. At the beginning of treatment, palatability of low caloric food was significantly higher and hypothetical duration of consumption of high caloric food was significantly longer in patients when compared to controls. After 8 weeks, in the patients palatability of low caloric food had decreased.

Meal patterns of normal, untreated bulimia nervosa and recovered bulimic women.

In order to examine the meal pattern characteristics associated with bulimia nervosa the meal patterns of 19 untreated bulimia nervosa, 12 recovered bulimics, and 21 normal controls spontaneously eating in their natural environments were compared. Subjects reported in a diary everything they either ate or drank for seven consecutive days. Meal pattern correlations included comparisons of the groups in regard to meal size (and binge size), meal frequency, premeal and postmeal intervals, deprivation ratios, satiety ratios, stomach contents, and composition of meals and binges. Results indicated

[Contrast-unloading week in the complex therapy of patients with metabolic-alimentary obesity and its effect on changes in body weight and lipid metabolism indices].

The influences of the contrast-unloading week (CUW) on the changes in the anthropometric and lipid metabolism parameters was studied in 150 female patients with metabolic alimentary obesity of the II-III stages, aged from 20 to 40. On the basis of the analysis of the changes in lipid metabolism in relation to their initial level and the hyperlipoproteinemia type it is suggested that the developed CUW is mostly indicated in a combined therapy of patients with the IV type of hyperlipoproteinemia. In the II type it is recommended in combination with a dosaged physical loading. CUW can be used in

[Weight reduction in obese diabetics: a double-blind study of diethylpropionate (author's transl)].

In a double-blind study 40 overweight maturity-onset diabetics on a weight-reducing diet were randomly assigned to treatment with either the appetite-suppressant diethylpropion hydrochloride (Tenuate), or placebo. After treatment for 8 weeks the mean weight loss achieved by each group was 4.9 and 3.3%, respectively. This approximately equal weight loss was too slight to exert any significant effect on glucose tolerance. Thus, an additional effect of this anorexiant in comparison with diet restriction alone, as described in obese non-diabetic subjects, is not evident in the case of obese diabet
