Investigating the functional integrity of the dorsal visual pathway in autism and dyslexia.

Numerous reports of elevated global motion thresholds across a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders have prompted researchers to suggest that abnormalities in global motion perception are a result of a general deficiency in the dorsal visual pathway. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the integrity of the dorsal visual pathway at lower subcortical (sensitivity to flicker contrast) and higher cortical (sensitivity to global motion) levels in children with autism, children with dyslexia, and typically developing children, of similar age and ability. While children with autism demonstrated i

Multiple vaccine and pyridostigmine interactions: effects on EEG and sleep in the common marmoset.

Following active service during the 1990/1991 Gulf conflict, a number of UK and US veterans presented with a diverse range of symptoms, collectively known as Gulf Veterans' Illnesses (GVI). The administration of vaccines and/or the pretreatment against possible nerve agent poisoning, pyridostigmine bromide (PB), given to Armed Forces personnel during the Gulf conflict has been implicated as a possible factor in the aetiology of these illnesses. The possibility that long-term health effects may result from the administration of these vaccines (anthrax, pertussis, plague, yellow fever, polio, ty

The relative sensitivities of sensory and motor fusion to small binocular disparities.

Horizontal binocular disparity is the fundamental stimulus for both fusional vergence and stereopsis, but whether common disparity-sensitive mechanisms are involved in both responses is unknown. To determine whether the sensitivities of motor and sensory fusion are interdependent, we studied vergence eye movements and depth discrimination, using stimuli with haplopic binocular disparities, in subjects with normal stereopsis and in subjects with mild to severe stereoanomalies. Our results showed that the subjects' disparity discrimination functions varied from nearly perfect discrimination to c

Sensory discrimination capabilities in patients with focal hand dystonia.

To explore the concept that dystonia may result from dysfunction of the sensory system, 14 patients with focal hand dystonia were tested during two somatosensory discrimination tasks. Compared with controls, patients had a higher threshold in a task involving discrimination of two electric stimuli closely related temporally, an abnormality that correlated with the degree of severity of dystonia. There was no significant difference in a single-touch, gross localization task. The possible relevance of these findings to the pathogenesis of dystonia is discussed.

Raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad: responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to shape and orientation.

The representations of orientation and shape were studied in the responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to an isolated, raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad. The objects were the top portions of a sphere with a 5-mm radius, and two toroids each with a radius of 5 mm along one axis and differing radii of 1 or 3 mm along the orthogonal axis. The velocity and direction of stroking were fixed while the orientation of the object in the horizontal plane was varied. Each object was stroked along a series of laterally shifted, parallel, linear trajectories over the receptive

Conditional control by midazolam and amphetamine in a rapid appetitive discrimination procedure.

The present two experiments examined conditional control by midazolam and amphetamine cues in an appetitive discrimination procedure. In each of two experiments, male Wistar rats were subjected to a small number of two types of training sessions in a conditioning box. During one type of session, a stimulus was consistently followed by food in a magazine, whereas during the other type of session, this very same stimulus was followed by nothing. Groups of rats were injected with either midazolam (0.1 mg/kg, s.c.) or amphetamine (0.5 mg/kg, s.c.), prior to each food-reinforced session, and with s

FR discrimination training reverses 6-hydroxydopamine-induced striatal dopamine depletion in a rat model of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

Five-day-old rats received 6-hydroxydopamine (6-HD; 100 micrograms base) or vehicle intracisternally. Striatal and cortical dopamine (DA) and metabolite levels were then determined when animals were three or 8.5 months of age and the latter rats had been weight-reduced for 5.5 months. In the latter animals these determinations were made 1 month following 4.5 months of home-cage confinement (untrained animals) or of food-maintained fixed-ratio (FR) discrimination training involving either a single discrimination (performance animals) or incrementally more difficult discriminations. Striatal DA

Interpreting the results of unilateral digital nerve repair.

We report the results of examination of patients before primary and secondary unilateral digital nerve repair. Two-point discrimination was uniformly recorded. The results show that significant overlap of adjacent digital nerves is common and this has important implications for interpretation of results after repair. Recommendations are made regarding the evaluation of outcome following surgery.

Age-related changes in oral sensation.

Oral sensation (including two-point discrimination, oral stereognosis, vibrotactile detection, somesthetic sensitivity, proprioception, and thermal sensitivity) was studied in 60 healthy adults in five age categories: 20 to 34, 35 to 49, 50 to 64, 65 to 79, and 80 years and above. Thermal and somesthetic sensitivity as well as proprioception did not change with age. Ability to differentiate tactile and vibratory sensation on the lip decreased after age 80 (P less than .01), but vibration detection on the soft palate did not change. Stereognostic ability remained good up to age 80, and then dec

Psychophysiological effects of early morning bright light exposure in young adults.

The effects of bright light on circadian rhythms in man are well documented. Nevertheless the theoretical basis and the rules for the practical utilization of light exposure as therapy need still to be better defined. The present study determined to what extent a 2-hr bright light exposure (0500-0700 h) improved the adjustment to an early rising in normal adults. Phase changes were assessed in subjective alertness, performance in several search tasks, time estimation, and a visual discrimination task, as well as in body motility, plasma cortisol concentrations, and body temperature. The chlordiazepoxide/pentylenetetrazol discrimination: characterization of drug interactions and homeostatic responses to drug challenges.

Rats were trained to discriminate chlordiazepoxide (CDP) from pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) in a two-lever food motivated discrimination task. Training drug doses were adjusted until subjects emitted approximately 50% of their responses on each of the two drug-appropriate levers during saline injection tests. Tests that followed injection of CDP/PTZ combinations illustrated a reciprocal antagonism between the two drugs. Saline-injection tests that followed large dose injections of CDP revealed a period of predominantly PTZ-appropriate responding that persisted after the initial period of predominant

Influence of maternal chlorpromazine on discrimination learning in rat offspring.

Light-dark discrimination learning in rat offspring born to mothers treated with chlorpromazine was studied. Daily doses of 16 mg/kg, administered from gestation day 17 to day 21, had no effect on the acquisition of lever press responses and on the original discrimination learning. However, acquisition of the reversal learning was retarded. The same dose administered during the nursing period did not produce such behavioral changes. The results indicate that high doses of chlorpromazine administered during the peripartum period might cause learning impairment in the offspring.

[Mental evaluation after chronic exposure to tetrachloroethylene].

With the aim of determining the effects of chronic occupational exposure to Per upon the selected intellectual and psychomotor functions two groups of workers have been examined. The proper group was that of chemical laundry workers exposed to Per (concentrations within TLVs and above). The control group was composed of knitting plant workers nonexposed to chemical substances. The findings point to significant differences between the test groups, consisting in an extension of the time of response to homogeneous and complex light stimuli (psychomotor function) and in a decrease in the ability t

Olfactory discrimination of structurally related molecules: receptor cell responses to camphoraceous odorants.

Electrophysiological investigations of the selective sensitivity of receptor cells have shown that odorants could be distributed into groups according to the profiles of responses that they elicited from a population of receptor cells. As the concept of odorant group plays an important role in the understanding of olfactory coding, an attempt was made to investigate in detail the group properties of a number of structurally and qualitatively related molecules: 1,8 cineole, DL-camphor, borneol, iso-borneol, adamantane, fenchone, fenchyl alcohol, 3,3,5-tri-methyl cyclohexanone, camphene, 1,1,2,2

Discriminative stimulus properties of S(-)- and R(+)-cathinone, (+)-cathine and several structural modifications.

Rats trained to discriminate between the stimulus properties of 0.6 mg/kg of racemic cathinone and its vehicle, in a two-lever operant task for food reinforcement, were administered doses of S(-)-cathinone, R(+)-cathinone, (+)-cathine and several structurally-related derivatives, in order to study structure-activity relationships. The optical isomers of cathinone and (+)-cathine produced patterns of responding similar to that observed with the training drug; S(-)-cathinone (ED50 = 0.22 mg/kg) was the more active of the two isomers, while R(+)-cathinone (ED50 = 0.72 mg/kg) was more active than

Lateral asymmetry of positive and negative emotions.

This reaction time study examined whether the left and right hemispheres are differentially specialized to process positive and negative affect respectively in adult females and males. Either happy or sad facial expressions of emotion were presented simultaneously with neutral facial expressions to the two visual fields. Happy faces were responded to more rapidly in the left visual field-right hemisphere with no visual field differences for sad faces. Females were superior to males when emotional facial stimuli were presented to the left visual field and were more accurate in recognizing sad f

Training visual-spatial ability in EMR children.

Educable mentally retarded children were randomly assigned to either a visual-spatial training condition or a control group. The children who received training showed a gain from pretest to posttest on the Children's Embedded Figures Test that corresponds to approximately 4 years of maturation in nonretarded children. The performance of the children in the control group on the posttest was not significantly different from their performance on the pretest. Correlations between measures of visual-spatial ability and the employment adjustment of retarded persons obtained by other investigators su

Behavioral and biochemical correlates of diet change in phenylketonuria.

The investigation was designed to explore the use of tests tapping reversible aspects of behavior and performance and to find out whether these data can be correlated with concurrent metabolic changes in different dietary phases. The four subjects had classic phenylketonuria, diagnosed on the basis of a high level of serum phenylalanine on a regular diet, and severe mental retardation. Three types of diet were used: the general institutional diet, a low phenylalanine diet, and a low phenylalanine diet with added L-phenylalanine. A position discrimination and reversal task was used.
