Systematic review of microorganism disinfection performance by chemical and ultraviolet light water treatment methods.

Safe drinking water is critical for public health, yet microbial contamination remains a significant global challenge. We conducted a systematic review to update World Health Organization guidance on water disinfection technologies by synthesizing peer-reviewed literature from 1997 to 2021 on the performance of free chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, and ultraviolet (UV) light against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed log10 reduction values (LRVs) and contact times (Ct) or fluence (for UV) from laboratory and field studies. We included studies from multi

Drinking water nitrate, disinfection byproducts, and prostate cancer incidence in the Agricultural Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Drinking water can be an important source of exposure to nitrate and disinfection by-products, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). N-nitroso compounds formed endogenously after nitrate ingestion are animal carcinogens, and THM and HAA exposures increase the risk of some cancers. Our objectives were to evaluate associations of drinking water nitrate and disinfection byproducts with total and aggressive (distant stage, poorly differentiated grade, fatal, or Gleason score ≥7) prostate cancer in the Agricultural Health Study cohort. METHODS: Male participants

A simple osmotic intervention suppresses nanoparticle-induced bacterial persistence during environmental disinfection.

Persister cells that survive disinfection can recover and drive bacterial regrowth, thereby limiting long-term treatment efficacy and remaining a challenge even for nano-enabled water treatment. Here, we subjected Escherichia coli to 14 cycles of high-dose exposure to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and found that repeated treatment increased persister levels by nearly 1,000-fold after recovery and regrowth. During the NP challenge, evolved cells displayed altered K+ flux, reduced cell volume, softened envelope mechanics, and envelope remodeling, consistent with an osmotic-stress-associated adapt

Metabolic Disruption and Steatosis Induced by Drinking Water Disinfection Byproducts in HepG2 and HUH7 Cells.

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are ubiquitous contaminants formed during drinking water treatment and are traditionally regulated based on cytotoxic and genotoxic endpoints. However, evidence suggests that DBPs may also act as metabolic disruptors interfering with hepatic metabolic pathways. This study investigates the early metabolic disruption and steatogenic effects of four regulated DBPs, bromoform (BR), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), monochloroacetic acid (MCA), and dichloroacetic acid (DCA), using the human hepatic cell models HepG2 (derived from hepatocellular carcinoma) and HUH7 (derived

Efficacy of Imidazolium Salt in Disinfecting Soft Contact Lenses Contaminated with Acanthamoeba spp. Trophozoites.

OBJECTIVES: Acanthamoeba spp. can infect the cornea due poor lens hygiene allows colonization, and current cleaning solutions are ineffective due to resistant cyst formation. This study aimed to establish, for the first time, a standardized protocol for Acanthamoeba trophozoite adhesion to silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses and to quantify the impact of lens–drug interactions on antiparasitic efficacy. Additionally, the study evaluated the efficacy of 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C16MImCl) against Acanthamoeba trophozoites in the presence of soft contact lenses, in comparison w

A Recyclable Magnetic Nanosystem Enable Circulatory Antibacterial Strategy for Static and Dynamic Blood Disinfection.

Bacterial infections in the bloodstream, leading to sepsis, seriously endanger human health. Clinically, blood dialysis is the main treatment, yet is relatively ineffective in handling severe bacterial infections. To better meet the clinical demands for blood disinfection, a biological material with antibacterial, recyclable, and stable features needs to be designed and integrated into the blood dialysis strategy. In this study, we designed a magnetic nanosystem (Fe3O4/CeO2@BP) based on black phosphorus (BP) functionalized with Fe3O4 and CeO2 to enable a circulatory antibacterial strategy for

Identification, Formation, and Toxicity of Haloimidazoles as Emerging Nitrogenous Aromatic Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water.

Identification of unknown disinfection byproducts (DBPs) remains a significant challenge in the supply of safe drinking water, as identified DBPs do not fully account for DBP-related adverse effects on human health. In this study, gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry, along with multiple identification using the electron ionization and chemical ionization sources, was employed to identify six haloimidazoles as newly nitrogenous aromatic DBPs in drinking water. These compounds include 4-chloroimidazole, 4-bromoimidazole, 2,4-dibromoimidazole, 4,5-dibromoimidazole, 2

Spin polarization induced by atomic strain of MBene promotes the ·O2- production for groundwater disinfection.

Superbugs in groundwater are posing severe health risks through waterborne pathways. An emerging approach for green disinfection lies at photocatalysis, which levers the locally generated superoxide radical (·O2-) for neutralization. However, the spin-forbidden feature of O2 hinders the photocatalytic generation of active ·O2-, and thus greatly limited the disinfection efficiency, especially for real groundwater with a low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. Herein, we report a class of strained Mo4/3B2-xTz MBene (MB) with enhanced adsorption/activation of molecular O2 for photocatalytic disi

Evaluating the Influence of Spray and Immersion Disinfection on the Dimensional Accuracy of Impression Materials: A Comprehensive Review.

Effective infection control in dental practice is essential, particularly during impression-making procedures that risk transmitting pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis B. This review evaluates how spray and immersion disinfection methods affect the dimensional accuracy of impression materials. A comprehensive search of electronic databases identified studies assessing the impact of these disinfection techniques on various materials. The findings indicate that elastomeric materials such as addition and condensation silicones and polysulfides, maintain dimensional stability with both methods. I

Molybdoenzymes-emulating bio-heterojunction hydrogel with rapid disinfection and macrophage reprogramming for wound regeneration.

Developing hydrogel dressings with the capabilities to accommodate irregular wounds and provide a cascade disinfective-regenerative microenvironment for wound repair is of great importance to combating pathogenic bacteria-infected wounds but remains an ongoing challenge. To address the conundrum, we devise a molybdoenzymes-emulating bio-heterojunction (M-bioHJ) doped double network (DN) hydrogel dressing for bacterial-infected wound healing. The near-infrared (NIR) photothermal effect of the M-bioHJ facilitates the exchange of multiple dynamic crosslinking sites in the hydrogel, endowing the h

Disinfection of medical devices with a steam machine that operates at atmospheric pressure and is suitable for home usage.

Medical devices that come in direct contact with human skin or the oral cavity will inevitably be contaminated with microorganisms, including potential pathogens. Ensuring the microbiological safety of such devices is therefore crucial to prevent infections. Healthcare institutions usually have the facilities needed for effective sterilization of reusable medical devices. However, effective sterilization or disinfection of medical devices for usage at home has remained challenging both in terms of pathogen elimination and user safety. Preferably, this involves easy-to-operate equipment that wo
