Predictors of Velopharyngeal Dysfunction in Individuals With Cleft Palate Following Surgical Maxillary Advancement: Clinical and Tomographic Assessments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether morphofunctional velopharyngeal aspects may be considered predictors of appearance or worsening of hypernasality in patients with cleft palate after surgical maxillary advancement (MA). DESIGN: Prospective. SETTING: National referral center for cleft lip and palate rehabilitation. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-two patients with repaired cleft palate, skeletal class III malocclusion, and normal speech resonance completed speech audio recordings and cone-beam computed tomography examination before (T1) and, on average, 14 months after (T2) MA. INTERVENTIONS: Hypernasa

Anomalously High Recruitment of the 2010 Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) Year Class: Evidence of Indirect Effects from the Deepwater Horizon Blowout in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) exhibited unprecedented juvenile recruitment in 2010 during the year of the Deepwater Horizon well blowout, exceeding the prior 39-year mean by more than four standard deviations near the Mississippi River. Abundance of that cohort remained exceptionally high for two subsequent years as recruits moved into older age classes. Such changes in this dominant forage fish population can be most parsimoniously explained as consequences of release from predation. Contact with crude oil induced high mortality of piscivorous seabirds, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops trun

Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography definition of the anatomical subregions of the upper airway: a validation study.

The exact boundaries of the upper airway subregions remain undefined. Consequently, anatomical limits vary greatly among different research groups and impede unbiased comparisons. The aim of this study was to provide clinical three-dimensional anatomical limits for the upper airway subregions, translate them into accurate and reliable cephalometric landmarks in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data, and validate the proposed measuring protocol. The upper airway of 40 normative individuals aged 23-35 years was evaluated with Dolphin Imaging(®) software. An appropriate grey-scale threshold v

Change in echolocation signals with hearing loss in a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens).

The echolocation signals of a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) were collected during a wall thickness discrimination task and compared to clicks recorded during an identical experiment in 1992. During the sixteen year time period, the subject demonstrated a loss of high frequency hearing of about 70 kHz. Clicks between the two experiments were compared to investigate the effect of hearing loss on echolocation signals. There was a significant reduction in the peak frequency, center frequency and source level of clicks between the two time periods. Additionally, the subject currently pr

Contamination levels of mercury and cadmium in melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra) from a mass stranding on the Japanese coast.

Total mercury (T-Hg), methyl mercury (M-Hg), cadmium (Cd), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations in the organs of melon-headed whales from a mass stranding on the Japanese coast were analyzed. The mean concentration of T-Hg in the liver (126+/-97 microg/wet g, n=13) was markedly higher than those in kidney (6.34+/-2.36 microg/wet g, n=12) and muscle (4.90+/-2.33 microg/wet g, n=15). In contrast, the mean concentration of M-Hg in the liver (9.08+/-2.24 microg/wet g) was similar to those in the kidney (3.47+/-0.91 microg/wet g) and muscle (3.78+/-1.53 microg/wet g). The mean pe

Identification and characterization of sporadic isolates of Streptococcus iniae isolated from humans.

Seven reference strains and seven clinical isolates of Streptococcus iniae, submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Streptococcus Reference Laboratory between 2001 and 2004, were successfully identified by a conventional identification system. The seven randomly submitted clinical isolates were sensitive to beta-lactams, macrolides, quinolones, and vancomycin. Two of the seven clinical isolates were resistant to tetracycline. All seven strains grew well and multiplied in a phagocytosis assay. One of the seven randomly submitted strains was more similar to the type strain of

Candida Infections in Marine Mammals: Epidemiology, Antifungal Resistance, and One Health Implications.

Candida albicans is currently considered one of the most significant fungal pathogens in cetaceans and pinnipeds and the spread of antifungal-resistant strains pose significant threats to animal health and One Health concerns. Although C. albicans is the most commonly detected species, non-albicans Candida (NAC) species, including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis and Nakaseomyces glabratus and the multidrug-resistant C. auris, have been recognized in captive dolphins. This review examines the clinical patterns observed in marine mammal taxa: cetaceans are most commonly vulnerable to respiratory …

It is often considered as a benign dise … so responsible for rinderpest (ovine, bovine), distemper (canine, feline), and epidemic diseases of dolphins, porpoises and seals. The current measles virus appeared recently from the rinderpest virus around the 6th century BCE. It has adapted perfectly to the human species, becoming strictly human, without animal reservoirs. A live attenuated vaccine was …

Distribution and toxicity of mercury in rats after oral administration of mercury-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption.

Toothed-whales and dolphins have been hunted for human consumption in Japan, and their muscles (red meats) are highly contaminated with mercury (Hg). We investigated the distribution and toxicity of Hg in rats after oral administration of Hg-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption in Japan. Rats were orally administered the red meat homogenate for seven consecutive days (0.5 g red meat/kg-bw/day). The red meat administered to rats contained 81microg/g of total mercury (T-Hg) and 13.4 microg/g of methyl mercury (M-Hg). This dose corresponds to the human consumption of 210 g r…

Reproductive physiology and development of artificial insemination technology in killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Research was conducted to define the basic reproductive physiology of killer whales (Orcinus orca) and to use this knowledge to facilitate the development of artificial insemination procedures. The specific objectives were 1) to determine the excretory dynamics of urinary LH and ovarian steroid metabolites during the estrous cycle; 2) to evaluate the effect of an exogenously administered, synthetic progesterone analog on reproductive hormone excretion; 3) to validate the use of transabdominal ultrasound for ovarian evaluation and timing of ovulation; 4) to examine the quality of semen after li

Ingestion of fishing gear and Anisakis sp. infection in a beached Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) in the Jeju Island, Republic of Korea: findings from post-mortem computed tomography and necropsy.

BACKGROUND: Human fishing activities have significantly affect environmental concern for marine ecosystems, conservation of marine mammals, and human health. Coastal cetaceans are highly vulnerable to ingestion of fishing gear, bycatching, or entanglement, all of which can be fatal for these animals. In particular, certain coastal dolphins and porpoises are heavily impacted by fishing gear such as angling gear or stownet, as their food often overlap with the target fish species of human fisheries. CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a case of an Indo-Pacific finless porpoise (Neophocaena p…

[Eosinophilic esophagitis associated with recurrent urticaria: is the worm Anisakis simplex involved?].

Anisakis simplex, a fish parasite of the nematode family, typically infects marine mammals such as whales, dolphins and seals. Human anisakiasis, which is acquired by eating raw or insufficiently heated fish or squid, has gained world-wide importance. Infestation with living larvae caused by eating parasitised fish results in acute upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting and may be confused with acute abdomen due to appendicitis and other inflammatory abdominal disorders. Extraintestinal organ manifestations are rare. Endoscopically, inflammation, oedema, erosions and ulcerations may be foun…

Complex polysaccharide inclusions in the skeletal muscle of stranded cetaceans.

Skeletal muscle samples were examined post-mortem in 148 cetaceans over a 12-year period. Histological analysis included haematoxylin and eosin (HE) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining with and without diastase digestion. In addition, histological muscle sections were immunostained for ubiquitin and fast and slow heavy-chain myosin isoforms. PAS-positive, diastase-resistant inclusions were detected in 26 animals from 11 different species. Older cetaceans were preferentially affected. These intrafibre inclusions varied from large aggregates to multiple coarse granules and were typically ass
