During conventional reconstruction of the auricle in patients with microtia, simply separating the auricle from the mastoid region with a full-thickness skin graft usually fails to create firm elevation and sufficient projection. To achieve frontal symmetry is difficult, and sometimes the normal auricle needs to be set back. We reconstructed the auricle in patients with microtia in two major stages using a modified Nagata's method. Using a wide W-incision skin flap, the first stage includes implantation of a cartilage framework and transposition of the ear lobule. Our modification lies in the

Prominent ear deformity is an autosomal dominant inherited anomaly of the external ear. It's found to be affecting approximately 5% of the population. It most frequently results from two reasons, one being the poor developmental of the antihelix and the other being the overdevelopment of the conchal bowl. This condition can cause psychological problems in school-age children. One or more anatomical problems of prominent ear may be existing in the individuals. Several surgical methods were developed for these problems. More than 200 surgical techniques have been described up to date in otoplast

OBJECTIVE: The authors report a case of mature teratoma of the middle ear in a 3-year-old girl with a 1-year history of otitis media.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Radiologic investigation revealed a partially cystic lesion of the petrous portion of the right temporal bone. It produced opacification of the middle ear as well as destruction of septal air cells. The patient underwent a subtotal petrosectomy. Histologically, the tumor was composed of an intimate admixture of mature tissues representing all three germ layers, including brain, myelinated nerve trunks, skeletal muscle, bone, immature cartil

The author describes a new prosthesis used in functional rehabilitation when the chain is destroyed. It consists of a tripod part in gold, anchored in the attic region with its foot resting on the plate of the stapes. This prosthesis is covered with a piece of autologous cartilage freshly removed from the tragus which forms the junction with the tympanic membrane or covering fascia. 60 cases are presented, some with a follow-up of 4 years. All of the patients were suffering from the sequelae of chronic otorrhoea, with varying degress of destruction of the chain and tympanic membrane, leaving a

BACKGROUND: Varieties of animals were used to study osteoarthritis pathogenesis. The Diannan small-ear pig, which is native to Yunnan, China, is thought to have an articular anatomy similar to that of humans and is more likely to be a source of pathological tissues than other animals. The aim of this study was to determine whether this animal can serve as a more effective osteoarthritis model and explore the role of SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling pathway in the development of Osteoarthritis in animals.
METHODS: Twenty-seven adult pigs were randomly divided into three groups and underwent the Hulth pro

Traumatic ear avulsion represents a difficult challenge for all reconstructive surgeons; hence, replantation and reattachment will provide the best aesthetic outcome. However, when microsurgery is not possible, the surgeon must choose the most appropriate alternative method to address the concern. We are reporting a case of a near-total right ear external auricle amputation attached only by small skin bridge. The patient was admitted to our institute 22 hours after sustaining an injury during a motor vehicle collision. He was successfully managed by reattaching the external auricle into the an

BACKGROUND: In myringoplasty or tympanoplasty, fascia of the temporalis muscle and perichondrium or cartilage-perichondrium composite grafts are most commonly used to reconstruct the tympanic membrane (TM). Primary failures or recurrent perforations in the anterior part of the TM frequently occur in cases of eustachian tube dysfunction or total perforations of the TM. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a perichondrium-cartilage composite graft for closure of total perforations of the TM. Twenty-one patients (17 adults, 4 children) were included in this study, all of whom had a total per

One of the common complications of microtia reconstruction with cartilage grafting is exposure of the framework. Recently, we used a mastoid fascial flap for salvage operations in two microtia patients, who had partial skin necrosis with resultant exposure of the cartilage framework. Following the excision of the necrotic skin, the anteriorly based mastoid fascial flap was elevated and transferred as a hinge flap on to the portion of the exposed framework. Split-thickness skin grafts were applied over the mastoid fascial flap. Each skin graft took well and the relief of the reconstructed ear w

The use of multicartilage composite grafts to repair surgical wounds of the lower third of the nose (ala nasi and tip) is described. These differ from the classic composite ear graft in three respects: First, the skin portion of the graft is removed separately from the cartilage permitting the operator to select the donor site that matches the nose best. Second, the cartilage, instead of being a single piece, is divided into small units allowing for more uniform reconstruction of cartilaginous portions of the nose. Third, larger composite grafts can be constructed safely by this technique than

Background There are different methods to repair the perforation of the tympanic membrane. Recently cartilage has been used for the repair and results are comparable to temporalis fascia. For surgical procedure endoscope had added good assistance in middle ear surgery. Though the one hand technique the image quality and results are on par with the use of a microscope. Objective To compare the graft uptake rate and hearing results between temporalis fascia and tragal cartilage in endoscopic myringoplasty. Method This is a prospective, longitudinal study conducted among 50 patients who underwent

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has made facial masks an essential part of daily life. While protective facial masks are crucial to help the spread of viral infections, they are common causes of facial skin breakdown, acne, and superficial injuries. Masks with elastic ear loops are also particularly likely to cause ear pressure injuries.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a case of a patient experiencing homelessness found to have significant postauricular wounds due to prolonged mask use in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. These injuries led to bilateral erosion of the helix with partial

Traumatic recurrent auricular hematoma can be a challenging medical problem, with complications resulting in cauliflower ear. Proper management often depends on an understanding of the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of fibroneocartilage--an abnormal fibrous cartilage formation in response to injury. Traditional treatment by incision and drainage, and compression dressing technique may be inadequate in the setting of recurrent or chronic hematoma. Instead, excision of the fibroneocartilage is essential in promoting hematoma resolution and wound healing. Appropriate treatment of auricular hema

Composite autografts of skin and cartilage from the auricule are useful in the reconstruction of defects in many areas of the head and neck. However, their use has certain limitations if minimal loss of the graft is to be achieved. A variety of examples are presented by the authors and the limitations are summarized.

OBJECTIVE: Cryptotia is a common congenital auricular deformity among Asian populations, often involving cartilage malformations in the upper third of the auricle. Existing surgical techniques frequently yield unsatisfactory outcomes due to inadequate skin coverage or insufficient cartilage correction. This study introduces a modified technique combining a postauricular Z-shaped skin flap with autologous conchal cartilage grafting to address these issues.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 48 unilateral severe cryptotia cases treated between 2020 and 2023. All patients underwe

Silvadene cream and Sulfamylon make up the treatment regimen for one contributor (Dr. Crumley). No systemic antibiotics would be given. Any areas of obvious third-degree burns would be debrided and grafted. The tympanic membrane perforation would be treated with antibiotic/steroid drops. The second author concurs with use of Silvadene cream and would avoid any pressure on the area (Dr. Abemayor). While he agrees that systemic antibiotics should be avoided, he also would not prescribe ear drops. He recommends evaluation for a pulmonary or ophthalmologic injury. There is a disagreement regarding

The intricate shaping of the facial skeleton is essential for function of the vertebrate jaw and middle ear. While much has been learned about the signaling pathways and transcription factors that control facial patterning, the downstream cellular mechanisms dictating skeletal shapes have remained unclear. Here we present genetic evidence in zebrafish that three major signaling pathways - Jagged-Notch, Endothelin1 (Edn1), and Bmp - regulate the pattern of facial cartilage and bone formation by controlling the timing of cartilage differentiation along the dorsoventral axis of the pharyngeal arc
