Prediction of return-to-work of low back pain patients sicklisted for 3-4 months.

The purpose of this Dutch prospective population-based study was to identify prognostic factors for return-to-work of employees with 3-4 months sick leave due to low back pain (LBP). A cohort of 328 employees was formed and baseline data were collected. One year after the first day of the sick leave, 91% of the original cohort participated in a second interview (n=298). During the baseline measurement, information was collected about health status, history of LBP, occupational variables, job characteristics and social economic variables. At the second interview, 66% of the employees had return

Different patterns of boys' externalizing behavior and their relation to risk factors: a longitudinal study of preschool children.

Childrens' externalizing behaviors such as aggression, delinquency and impulsivity are serious problems in many societies. In previous person-oriented analyses we found two types of externalizing problems in boys. One pattern contained externalizing problems only, whereas the other type showed both externalizing and internalizing problems (anxiety, depression etc.). The present study addressed these two groups in a prospective longitudinal design. It was investigated whether the previous descriptive findings remained stable over time and, in particular, whether the two types differed in import

Common Sexually Transmitted Infections in Women.

The spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains a significant public health issue in the United States. Social, economic, and behavioral implications affecting the spread of STIs have been identified. The most important social factor in the United States is the stigma associated with discussing sex and STI screening. In this article, specific recommendations for women are included regarding screening, diagnosing, and treating common vaginal and cervical infections. Screening women for infections of the vagina and cervix is essential because untreated infections may result in compl

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to meningitis in northern Ghana.

Meningitis has a significant impact in the Sahel, but the mechanisms for transmission and factors determining a person's vulnerability are not well understood. Our survey examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of people in a meningitis-endemic area in the Upper East region of northern Ghana to identify social, economic, and behavioral factors that may contribute to disease transmission and possible interventions that might improve health outcomes. Key results suggest potential interventions in response to the risk posed by migration, especially seasonal migration, a lack of knowledge

Intermunicipal health care consortia in Brazil: strategic behavior, incentives and sustainability.

This article studies strategic behavior in municipal health care consortia where neighboring municipalities form a partnership to supply high-complexity health care. Each municipality partially funds the organization. Depending on the partnership contract, a free rider problem may jeopardize the organization. A municipality will default its payments if it can still benefit from the services, especially when political pressures for competing expenditure arise. The main result is that the partnership sustainability depends on punishment mechanisms to a defaulting member, the gains from joint pro

Divorce: a fact in your practice.

Although the divorce rate has risen dramatically, marriage is still the lifestyle of the majority of adults. Divorce disrupts one's identity, economic and emotional dependancy and disturbs primary relationships with family of origin, children, friends and colleagues. Physicians may have trouble adjusting to new circumstances in their patients' lives. Serious emotional adjustments are necessary in resuming the status of being single. The physician can help by focusing on the support system, by emphasizing that the turmoil of adjustment is normal and by helping set realistic goals. Studies show

Is it time to introduce health coaching in inflammatory bowel disease management?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic, relapsing-remitting condition with profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Conventional therapies are essential for controlling intestinal inflammation but often fail to address behavioral and motivational dimensions critical for adherence, stress management, and quality of life. Health Coaching has emerged as a patient-centered intervention that fosters self-efficacy, resilience, and sustainable behavior change. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on Health Coaching in chronic disease management and explores its potent

Personality-Related Factors and Depressive Symptomatology Predict Behavioral Control in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorders.

In the face of increasing social, economic, and health consequences of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and limited effects of available treatment options, the search for novel prevention and management methods continues to remain a timely and valid endeavor. This, however, requires a better grasp of the theoretical framework underlying addiction mechanisms. With the goal to extend the existing body of evidence on AUDs, we set out to investigate the effect of personality-related factors and depressive symptomatology on (i) impulsivity, (ii) cognitive response inhibition, and (iii) the links betwee

Using newly optimized genetic tools to probe Strongyloides sensory behaviors.

The oft-neglected human-parasitic threadworm, Strongyloides stercoralis, infects roughly eight percent of the global population, placing disproportionate medical and economic burden upon marginalized communities. While current chemotherapies treat strongyloidiasis, disease recrudescence and the looming threat of anthelminthic resistance necessitate novel strategies for nematode control. Throughout its life cycle, S. stercoralis relies upon sensory cues to aid in environmental navigation and coordinate developmental progression. Odorants, tastants, gases, and temperature have been shown to shap

An effective and concise device for detecting cold allodynia in mice.

Detection of cold allodynia is a very important aspect in the study of pain behavior. An effective and concise device for detecting cold pain has always been the hope of many researchers. Here, an easily produced and operated cold plate device is presented for the assessment of cold allodynia in mice. The device used to detect cold allodynia has two components: a chamber consists of a cylinder for animal experiment and a cube box around the chamber for holding ice to keep temperature stable. In the testing chamber, a mouse was placed on the circular plexiglass plate steady at 4 °C above ice fo

Patterns of preventive dental behavior.

Preventive dental behavior was examined using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 1971-75 conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Most research to date has dealt with the use of all types of dental services, with relatively few studies focusing on utilization of dental services for preventive purposes or on preventive dental behavior. Economic theory on the demand for health services and the Andersen model of health services utilization were applied to examine predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics which may influence use of preventive de

Risk factors for emotional and behavioral problems in moderately-late preterms.

OBJECTIVE: To assess which factors, including maternal, lifestyle, pregnancy- and delivery-related, fetal and neonatal factors adjusted for socio-economic status, are related to emotional and behavioral problems in moderately-late preterm born children (MLPs; gestational age 32.0-35.9 weeks) at 4 years of age. MLPs are at greater risk of emotional and behavioral problems than full-term born children. Especially for MLPs, knowledge about factors that increase or decrease the risk of emotional and behavioral problems is scarce. DESIGN AND SETTING: We assessed emotional and behavioral problems i

Role of Technology in Promoting Heart Healthy Behavior Change to Increase Equity in Optimal Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Populations most affected by cardiovascular health disparities, including underrepresented populations with lower socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, and those living in underserved rural communities, are disproportionately exposed to adverse social determinants of health. Specifically, economic instability and suboptimal living conditions within the neighborhood and built environment directly determine access to resources and opportunities for healthful behaviors. In this scientific statement, we examined the technology-enabled interventions that address cardiovascular health beha
